Which Should She Choose? by QuinModah(f): 12:08am On Jan 01, 2023
My Sister is in a conundrum. She got an offer in lagos for 300k gross and I know net pay will make it lower.

She's never been to lagos or have any one close to the Island where the job is located but it offers excellent career growth.

Her current job in the North is stress free but has no growth internally.

She's thinking of turning down lagos because I believe I'd struggle to get acquainted with the city, traffic and accommodation issues.

Anyone who also had this experience and did it pay off moving to lagos?

Note that she can get more opportunities if I keep improving myself.

I'll always prefer a stress-free work anytime since it gives me time to do other things. I love my time the most. If it were I, I'd ignore the Lagos job but would plan smarter ways to diverse my income. ₦300k monthly sounds big only when you earn less than it. As a freelance research writer, I am very sure I'd earn the six months salary in a month so why should I choose a job that will hinder that?

That's my opinion tho.

I shouldn't be a wet blanket either. Doesn't she mind the big stress of relocation, accommodation, and adaptation? Can she handle the high cost of living in Lagos? Traffic congestion? And has she considered the job security?

If she has, she should grab it.

I mean, you should grab it.

Stop confusing us...she or you ??

Anyway, lagos is cool via opportunities and all that, but the struggle comes with accomodation/transportation. If these two can be covered easily then you or her is good to go

. I noticed you just have to act like an insane person (kolo mental) to be able to stay in Lagos. If not, people go use your head. grin

Just came back from Lagos to relax my nerves before going back.

The Lagos opportunity is obviously better for her if her goal is to grow and have a good career. Several jobseekers from other states who landed good jobs in Lagos also faced those issues of accommodation and acclimatization you spoke about but today are better off for it.

That 300k gross salary this year might become 900k in 5 years. She would also develop really good exposure and valuable networks.

In that same time span in Kaduna, she'd most likely still be on the same level.

He/she should choose one and give me the other job.
But I wouldn't want to go down north

Find out if the high pay is really a high pay or just a higher number.

Accommodation is higher in Lagos. Food will also be costlier as well as transportation and bills.

So factor, those into your potential expenses in Lagos and you'll see if the high pay is not just bogus.

But if the career growth is guaranteed and not just a means to draw her in, then you should give it a shot.

No one loves to be stuck in one position till forever

ATEAMS:
Any

Instead of choosing just anyone, the best bet is to choose Tinubu because all other candidates are not capable.

Congrats to her.

If she can cope with the cost of feeding , transportation and accomodation, stress, traffic, let her go for it.

Those are the constant outliers that take a chunk of your income in Lagos.

It's a bubble.

If she wants to grow by surmounting challenges she should pick Lagos, but if she wants to remain stagnant in her comfort zone she can stay in the North.

Career Growth should be a key non-negotiable indicator for anyone who intends to do a ‘9-5’. If the new company in Lagos has a clearly defined pathway for growth/ascension, then it’s a win for her.

From the 300k job, she will get another opportunity. When you leave your comfort zone, you will see life from a different perspective.

She should go for it ASAP....

Why would anyone turn down an offer for an organisation that have prospect for growth and advancement to the one that is stagnant?

You conveniently left out how much she is being paid in the north. You don’t think that would be a major factor in the decision making?
