He would need to work full time in care at premium rates to be able to make an after tax amount of £8k in 90 days. This would be in breach of his student visa work restriction.

Oops. Then I guess the only option is to raise as much as possible and then appeal to the school for a flexible payment timeline, like I said in the second part.

@semmy k, @amarathripple, Lexus and other elders. A Quick Question: Is it possible for a newly employed staff to asked for a raise immediately after probation even though the agreement signed says salary amendment will be done every February starting from next year. But his claim is that the JD was to service uk office but during the probation time he has been servicing all other office ( about 4 of them) and done above what was required of him.
He should read through his contract thoroughly before attempting this, as sentences like "the job description is not exhaustive of this list" are a good enough reason to get him to work for other regions. Also, how is servicing other countries adding to his workload; is he spending extra hours, travelling to these countries, etc.? It’s really only an issue if he’s performing too many functions outside of his scope of work and it's messing up his work-life balance. So these factors can be used as leverage to ask for more money.

As for him going above and beyond, that's not a good enough reason to ask for a raise just after a probationary period; this is more of a long-term ask, perhaps a few months before the February increase, so he can get more than the agreed-upon percentage in his contract. I would advise that he also look at the big picture as well; servicing other countries means he’s broadening his skill set and portfolio. Also, more money isn’t always the answer; can he get better benefits?

However, if he feels strongly about getting a raise because he’s doing way too much, he should have an informal chat with his line manager before making an official request.

The school won't give him a flexible payment plan for 8k, that's way too much. They'll block his blackboard and at some point report him to home office if he can't meet up. They are only nicer to BSc and PhD students when it comes to flexible payment plans for large amounts. Also, International students (including Nigerians) have been showing them Pepper no thanks to Nigerian banks and delayed Form A payments and also partly due to unrealistic expectations of making the balance in a few months.

And how did you arrive at this conclusion.........

Breakdown figures please......

Remember, this student go chop, student go travel, student go pay bills, student go pay rent, etc etc

Also remember, student only got 20 hours working time allocated + only 24 hours makes one day and 7 days, makes one week .......

Oya o, I dey wait ........ grin

Did you read my post correctly? I’m saying it’s nigh impossible to make that money in 90 days unless he is working full time plus overtime at premium rates which his student visa won’t allow.
For the records I know someone that made an average of £3.5k (before tax ) per month in a care job (supported living) working circa 65 hours a week so it’s doable but the OP’s visa restrictions won’t allow this.

I think he responded to the wrong post, maybe he meant to quote the post you responded to. But 65 hours a week though!!? Wow, that sounds intense and unhealthy. Anyway, to each their own.

Yeah I thought so too. Exactly my sentiments re my Carer pal, all those long hours would eventually take their toll but the mansion in the village will need to be completed though smiley. Each to their own like you said.

It's intense but as I understand 'supported living', that includes time when they'll be sleeping at the patient's place at night and/or basically just monitoring them, so it's not physically intense whatsoever - as opposed to working in a care home with 'invalids'.

For people who don't mind it, it's a really good gig, lol.

Edit: This is hearsay of hearsay o. Nobody should make plans based on this o, abeg.

No, the probation review is for February 2023 and he is already sure to pass as his manager didn’t hide his decision on this but next salary review as stated in the contract is for February 2024. Also He later noticed the average pay for such role is a bit higher than what He was offered and even intern In the company are receiving same thing as He receives but due to just getting a job asap He accepted it.
First of all , who do you think he should talk to first informally HR Director or my Manager?
Secondly, what will be the best form of approach so they won’t be issues since he is suppposed to have read the terms of agreement before signing or can He claim He thought it was February 2023 the first review was going to take place.
koonbey:

My understanding is that the probation review has occurred already - that would have been the perfect time to raise it.

Anyway, if it's February 2023, I would say wait and see what they offer, and if it's not up to par, raise the points made here. I should note though that it's not really a question of the geographical coverage that should be the priority - it should be whether the workload is significantly different, in terms of time and other things like travel etc. If it's taking the same amount of time/effort, the contract will typically be worded to cover that the company can assign you to different duties based on business needs, so they likely aren't actually violating it in any way. You should definitely still make the case for an increase, just bear that in mind in the presentation.

If it's February 2024, then yes, ask ASAP.

My rule of thumb is always to raise things like this informally to 'test the waters' and prime the recipients, before putting in a formal request.
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by AgentXxx(m): 3:11pm On Jan 04, 2023
It’s an IT Support Role so he had to support other offices with different time zones e.g US and Australia so sometimes has to work out of normal office hours.

Because the employee was trying to win the manager and hr over which I think he has done well but he feels he has been robbed with the salary paid considering the average pay of such role plus he got to know interns are paid same fee.

Which of the February? Probation review is February 2023 while salary amendment is February 2024
Lexusgs430:

During the probation, was the employee sent abroad (what do you mean by UK office only)............

Done above and beyond during a probationary period, is a way of proving capabilities and abilities........ Why did the employee not refuse the extra roles ............ wink

Wait till February, but employee should have an informal conversation, over a cup of coffee, to their line manager........ For all we know, the extra roles carried out, might have simply gone unnoticed.......... grin

Servicing other countries kinda add to his hours as there are different time zones and he would need to work outside his normal hours sometimes.

True he has gained a lot of benefits servicing other countries plus having access to being impactful and among key shareholders in company but concern is the bills as he can hardly save after bills plus hearing that intern are getting same pay as him.

Wait for your probation review and raise it. That’s the perfect time for it. All probation reviews will have a section where you’ll be asked to air your views and talk about what the company can do to support you better blah blah blah

I say wait because they may already have a salary increase in mind. Companies often don’t wait till the contractual dates, especially if it’s a hot industry/role. That’s what happened in my case.

When raising it, focus on the workload and the internal salaries. If possible keep the external ones out of it. You don’t want to highlight that you have been looking out YET. It’ll be implicit anyway.

Two, talk to your manager, not HR. It’s your manager that’ll advocate for any increase, not HR. You don’t want to go over your manager's head because it’s still them HR will ask about your performance etc before taking any decision.

Three, please perish the thought of claiming you misunderstood your contract. Just bring it up normally - they’ll even be asking you to 'be open and frank’ in the probation review so there’s no need to overthink it. Worst case scenario is they say they won’t increase and you plan your exit to a better paying role. Leaving because you can’t agree terms is not ideal but still normal - Don’t add integrity issues into the mix, please. You never know when you might need a reference or something else.

Yea based on this, he definitely needs to re-negotiate and Koonbey ‘s suggestion is good enough to resolve his situation.

My advice to anyone looking for a full-time job, I understand that it’s not easy, but always negotiate and never accept their first offer, even if they advertised the figures.

As a matter of fact, during the recruitment stage, if they ask you what your expectations are for pay, ask them what their budget is. If they say they can’t reveal their budget, mention a salary range. Do your research on the company’s average salary for that role on Glassdoor, add extra digits to it (depending on your risk appetite, me na armed robber figures I dey add just to force them to reveal the real salary and it has never failed me, I will now use style to add, "I’m open to negotiate depending on the benefits" ;this usually makes them hint at their own budget range for the role), and be very confident when you mention your expected salary range as confidence is really key!

Finally, never tell them your current salary. It’s not their business. Epistle over! grin

Also I think they really did your guy dirty! Paying him what they pay interns is a big slap, new hires usually get paid more than current employees in the same role because of market value and then new hires are expected to negotiate. Hopefully, he has a really good line manager who can fight for more pay for him but If they say no, he should keep on doing amazing work and start working on his exit strategy! Companies always do this nonsense so know your value and add tax.
