Types Of Biblical Fasting by IrepChrist: 7:21pm On Jan 14, 2023
The month of January is a month Christians popularly set aside for fasting.

The Scriptures provide many reasons for a “biblical fast”.

In summary all reasoning for fasting should inevitably draw us closer to Christ and assist in the fulfillment of His own purposes in and through us—personal transformation.

Biblical Fast :

Three Types of Fast

Biblical fasting helps us to subdue the flesh and empower our spirit so that we can clearly interact with the holy spirit.

Yet the question lingers: How should we fast?

I have personally identified three types of biblical fasts.
They are:
Standard Fast: No food, only water or liquids throughout the entire time of fasting.

In Matthew 4:2, we find Jesus being tempted in the wilderness while He fasted for 40 days with only water.

Then there’s the Partial Fast: No Choice Foods or meats. At their own requests, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendigo in Daniel 1: 8-16 refrained from eating anything but vegetables and water.

And the Total Fast: No food or drink also called dry fast. In Exodus 34:28 and Acts 9:9, Moses and Paul didn’t eat food or drink.

The month of January is the beggining of all months. It's time to plan your year. As you plan and pray, consider where you are, project where you want to be. And see how God will take you there this year.

1. And according to Jesus Christ, the only way to draw closer to Him is through continuous submission and obedience to undecided God's very own teachings and commandments- John 8 vs 31 - 36 — as opposed to the doctrines and traditions of men which Jesus Christ instead made clear were nothing but lies told by men hiding behind the name of God. undecided

2. What you claim here has no foundation of any kind in scripture. Fasting, as commanded, and explained by God Himself, has nothing to do with subduing the flesh - Isaiah 58 vs 1 - 14 & Zechariah 7 vs 1 - 14. undecided

3. God has never been honored by your many rituals in which you torture your bodies — starvation-diets, denying yourselves of sex, flagellation rituals, etc. —in much the same way he is not honored when you eat and drink. undecided
5 Do you think I want to see people punish their bodies on those days of fasting? Do you think I want people to look sad and bow their heads like dead plants? Do you think I want people to wear mourning clothes and sit in ashes to show their sadness? That is what you do on your days of fasting. Do you think that is what the Lord wants?... - Isaiah 58 vs 5 - 14
According to Zechariah, God has asked this same question of His people, Israel, through His prophets on several occasions. undecided
1. Zechariah received a message from the Lord in the fourth year that Darius[a] was the king of Persia. This was on the fourth day of the ninth month (Kislev).
2 The people of Bethel sent Sharezer, Regem-Melech, and his men to ask the Lord a question.
3 They went to the prophets and to the priests at the Temple of the Lord All-Powerful. They asked them this question: “For many years we have shown our sadness for the destruction of the Temple. In the fifth month of each year, we have had a special time of crying and fasting. Should we continue to do this?”
4 I received this message from the Lord All-Powerful:
5 “Tell the priests and the other people in this country this: ‘For seventy years you fasted and showed your sadness in the fifth month and in the seventh month. But was that fasting really for me?
6 And when you ate and drank, was that for me? No, it was for your own good.
7 The Lord used the earlier prophets to say the same thing long ago. That was when Jerusalem was still a rich city filled with people and there were still people living in the surrounding towns, in the Negev, and in the western foothills.’” - Zecharian 7 vs 1 - 7
4. Scripture never in fact states that Jesus Christ planned a fast for those 40 days. Rather, it is written that He was led away by the Spirit of God and ended up fasting for 40 days and 40 nights in pretty much the same way that Moses and Elisha did when they were also each led out in the wilderness by God - Exodus 34 vs 28 & 1 Kings 19 vs 7 - 14. These were unplanned happenings, and nothing to be compared to any of the pre-planned starvation-diet rituals you call fasting. undecided

So, are you insinuating that because Jesus Christ mentioned fasting, Jesus Christ must have meant starvation-diet fasting which is against God— since God indicated that He abhors it—, and not the doing-of-good-works fasting that God commands? undecided

5. Jesus Christ said that those who belong to Him are those who obey His teachings and commandments, and given that Jesus Christ never in fact asked any of His followers to partake in starvation diets using His name, it follows that God's decree in Isaiah 58 and Zechariah 7, is what stands as default teaching for all who belong to Jesus Christ. And as God made clear, He is only honored when we fast in obedience to His decree. undecided
5 Do you think I want to see people punish their bodies on those days of fasting? Do you think I want people to look sad and bow their heads like dead plants? Do you think I want people to wear mourning clothes and sit in ashes to show their sadness? That is what you do on your days of fasting. Do you think that is what the Lord wants?
6 “I will tell you the kind of day I want—a day to set people free. I want a day that you take the burdens off others. I want a day when you set troubled people free and you take the burdens from their shoulders.
7 I want you to share your food with the hungry. I want you to find the poor who don’t have homes and bring them into your own homes. When you see people who have no clothes, give them your clothes! Don’t hide from your relatives when they need help.”
8 If you do these things, your light will begin to shine like the light of dawn. Then your wounds will heal. Your “Goodness” will walk in front of you, and the Glory of the Lord will come following behind you.
9 Then you will call to the Lord, and he will answer you. You will cry out to him, and he will say, “Here I am.” Stop causing trouble and putting burdens on people. Stop saying things to hurt people or accusing them of things they didn’t do.
10 Feel sorry for hungry people and give them food. Help those who are troubled and satisfy their needs. Then your light will shine in the darkness. You will be like the bright sunshine at noon.
11 The Lord will always lead you and satisfy your needs in dry lands. He will give strength to your bones. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring that never goes dry.
12 Your cities have been destroyed for many years, but you will rebuild them and their foundations will last for a long time. You will be called “Fence Fixer” and “Builder of Roads and Houses.”
13 That will happen when you stop sinning against God’s law about the Sabbath and when you stop doing things to please yourself on that special day. You should call the Sabbath a happy day. You should honor the Lord’s special day by not saying and doing things that you do every other day of the week.
14 Then you could enjoy the Lord. As the Lord himself says, “I could carry you up to the highest mountain and let you enjoy the land that I gave to your father Jacob.” - Isaiah 58 vs 5 - 14
