He's not making a mistake. Rather I'd say that you guys have serious comprehension issues. It is true that sometimes an older religion will copy ideas or even deify important figures from a more recent one.
For example in Hinduism which is a much older religion than Christianity and which is a polytheistic faith, some Hindus believe that Jesus is an "avatar" or a god in human form and they consider Him to be a reincarnation of their Krishna Avatar.
