I have read soo many comments about the 1st military coup of January 15th, 1966, I found out that many blamed Igbo military officers of that coup. Plz, if you are someone that want to add to your knowledge about the coup listing carefully. The coup of January 15th, 1966, was a general army agreement, between the north, south and west of Nigerian army to overthrow civilian government of that time. The agreement was that any civilian administrator that refused to hand over to the milliary should be killed. Then, they distributed Igbo military officers to the north, Hausa milliary officers to the west and Yoruba milliary officers to the East. The coup was carried out simultaneously on the same day. These officers went on their journey to various region to carry out their plans. The Igbo and Yoruba civilian administrators surrendered to the milliary, hence non of their civilians were killed.while Hausa civilian administrators refused to surrender to the milliary, then Igbo military officers killed them as earlier agreed upon.. This how those who don't know the history termed it Igbo coup. Ojukwu and Gowon was not part of the coup. This Igbo military coup mantra was the reason the northern military officers planned a reprisal attacked which led to the death of over 300 Igbo military personel at Ore Ogun state on their way to Lagos for a training, this second attack is what triggered the civil. This war between the north and east is still on till date. |

RoxyBrownAutos:Akintola who resisted with a pump gun in the West, nko? Also, the guys in charge of the cioup were Igbos and westerners, with a lot of help from soldiers from all tribes. It was not an Igbo coup, it was a coup carried out by left leaning officers in the army, whose aim was a leftwing government ruling Nigeria that would purge the rich and powerful class and replace it with a protelarian class led people's government. |

Flatherd shut up... Igbo soldiers masterminded and executed the first coup that destroyed the government of the first republic. They executed the prime minister (north) Premier of the North North's most ranking officer Premier of the west and it's ranking military officer. Meanwhile Nnamdi Azikiwe, Okpara, osadebe, Aguiyi ironsi who were key members of the government were spared for what reason exactly? Bloody revisionist! |

RoxyBrownAutos:So Donatus Okafor, Chris Anuforo and Emmanuel Ifeajuna who executed the Lagos axis were Hausas? Why in God's name did those boys brutally kill Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa? Ifeajuna drove him in a truck all day and when he became a burden took him to a field and executed him. Ifeajuna is not wholly Ibo, he is from Illah in Delta. Aguiyi Ironsi, an Ibo was the beneficiary of the coup, he ought to had tried Ifeajuna for treason and equally execute him. Unfortunately, the Ibos chose to won the coup by celebrating and supporting it so they paid the price. My opinion is that the hurt was on both sides, the civil war sadly was a brutal reply to the coup, so no side should ask for sympathy anymore. Do me I do u, God no dey vex |

ganisucks:Well that is Nigeria for you, there must be a tribal dimension....ignoring the fact that several of Nzeogwu's superiors, from all tribes had in the years before the coup complained about him disseminating leftist and panafricanist material among his fellow officers... |

@Batifield2023, The Igbo leaders were spared in the coup because they voluntary surrendered to milliary officers who came to take over power. This power drunk of the north did not start today. It started from the days of antiquity. They refused to surrender power, then the coup plotters carried out their agreement and killed them. |

RoxyBrownAutos:Mumu Did Balewa refuse to cooperate in Lagos ? And Azikwe conveniently left the country too. Did Okotie Eboh resist too?? Infact there was a 2nd palace coup shortly after the first one when Orizu surreptitiously transferred power to Ironsi amidst protest from the members of the Balewa cabinet Ironsi was an illegitimate leader and he paid the price 6 months after . |

I have made my point clear.why did the northern milliary officers accused Igbo military officers of Leaking the coup plot to their Igbo civilian administrators.?their claim was based on the assumption that there is no way all Igbo civilian administrators should surrender to the military coup plotters if no one had leaked their plans. The northern military officers accused Igbo military officers of sabotage. This been a major reason for the murdering of majority Igbo military officers as counter attack. |

RoxyBrownAutos:This was what happened between one of the coupist and Jaja Wachukwu. Now compare this to the fate that befell Akintola Balewa Bello and Okotie Eboh Wachuku's official residence, at 7, Okotie-Eboh Street Ikoyi, Lagos, was surrounded by soldiers. His younger brother: Kennedy Madu Wachuku, father of Ugonna Wachuku was with him that day, Wachuku looked through the window in the early hours of the morning and asked the soldiers: "What are you boys doing here?" One of the soldiers replied: "Good morning, Sir. But haven't you heard what is happening in the country?" To which Wachuku replied: "Yes. I know you boys have taken over the Government." And the soldier said: "Do not be afraid, Sir. We have come to protect you for being an honest Government Minister." Wachuku survived the military coup.
