You can use pretty much any sand so long as it is not salt-laden sand. I mix playground sand(sandy sand) with compost for my container plants and that works great for planting. What you need is soil with good drainage and you can add nutrients to it using compost. Compost is there for you to make your own good soil, so you don't first have to have to start first with good sand.

you did a great job no doubt. however this method is better for subsistence farming and not for commercial scale. so, comparing this method with the conventional style may not be obtainable as the output from the latter wl definately outweigh your aboved listed benefits.
