I never enjoyed Mascharano at the central defence because he wasn't a pessimistic defender. His anticipation was always one second late, meaning he had to rely on last ditch scrambling to clear the ball. Pessimistic defenders are those who are able to snuff our dangers before they materialise. People who are adept at defending.

Why do you think he was never deployed in that position for the national team or even for Liverpool? In Barcelona case, a one eyed man (Mascharano) became the leader of the blind. Pep liked Mascharano at the central defence because he was a good passer of the ball. Nothing more.

We have had our fair share of rubbish defenders. It is refreshing to see us trying to get things right finally in that department.

Simple answer was because they had better defenders.

Mascherano was never a disaster o. He was solid at defending. He was benching Vermaelen, Mathieu and Marc Bartra who are born defenders for many seasons o.

Even bleacherreports considered him as one of the 20 best defenders in the world, that decade.

Puyol and Pique were some of the best defenders out there when they played. Won everything there is to win, playing alongside each other.

These our new set of defenders are yet to win anything as a group. But they are good defenders.

Of course at youth team, you get to experience various position until you settle down to one position eventually. Mascherano may have done brilliantly but I wished we had better defenders, who were not converted like El Jefecito and who were good at defending, we would have won way more than we did especially with Messi up top. I'm sure you will agree with this.
