This Starlink Is Expensive To Maintain by Nobody:
The average Nigerian can't afford Starlink, Just stick to your MTN, GLO, or whatever you have

The cost of buying the equipment is $600 and $60 for delivery. you have to source dollars and use your dollar card to pay.

Few things you need to know:

1. The router is just like an access point, you can only connect to it wirelessly not through wire.

2. The standard cable that connects the Starlink device (dish) which is placed outside to the router inside is 75 feet.

So, you will also have to order Starlink Ethernet Adapter to connect it through the wire and also order a 150ft cable if the place you are setting the dish is above 75f btw, Starlink ethernet adapter is $25., and a 150ft replacement cable is about $32

monthly subscription for starlinks RESIDENTIAL plan is $43 which is about 31949 naira monthly

So literally I have to source dollars every month on the black market to subscribe to Starlink. Imagine if the dollar goes up, that means i have to pay more to sub. Also it is not unlimited internet, it is capped at 1TB

if you are on the residential plan, you can never pause payment. Starlink will always charge your dollar card every month whether you use it or not, the only way to stop them from charging is if you cancel their service

Starlink is obviously not for everyone as it is today. I've already placed an order, should be shipped within the next few days.

By the way, you don't have to go source for dollars. There are various virtual dollar debit card providers like Klasha, Chipper, Kuda, Kudiwave, Payday and so on.
I used Klasha to order for mine.

The fair usage policy hasn't been implemented yet. It was supposed to be implemented in December, but it was moved to February. The statement on their website now says, "No earlier than April".

Once implemented, you will have access to 1TB, with unhindered speed during peak hours (7am to 11pm). Once you reach that threshold, your speed will be capped to 1Mbps during peak hours.

However, your data consumption within off peak (11pm to 7am) hours are never counted, and there will be no speed limit during off peak hours.

The wise thing to do is to schedule your downloads within off peak hours, and do your other activities within peak hours, that is if 1TB will not take you through a month.

Update: The Starlink i ordered for got delivered to me today 15th Feb 2023 via DHL and it is currently been used.

There's no rush here. Paying in Naira or $$$ makes no difference to me. I have an active Dormicilliary account with investments that yields in $$; so sourcing FX is not an issue for me.

First of all, download any of those apps I mentioned earlier. Then register on the app and provide all the info that is needed to get verified, like BVN, vNIN or NIN, evidence of address, etc.

Once you get verified, you can then create a virtual dollar Mastercard or Visa, depending on the one available on the app.

In terms of exchange rate, Klasha seem to have the best exchange rate for now, with N751.11 to a dollar. Payday is N753 to a dollar today.

Starlink will not change its payment gateway to that of Naira. The naira pricing on the website is just to give an estimate of the official exchange rate, it's the same in other countries they have officially launched their service.

This is good then.

But a day will come when we will have Unlimited data and speed access without hindrance like Peak and OffPeak paradigm.

Lol. I use an unlimited 50mbps fiber in my home, and I've never gone past 1TB in a month. I stream everything: YouTube 4k, Netflix 4k, Amazon prime 4k, IPTV in 4k, DSTV , etc. But I live alone, so I can imagine having other family members connected potentially driving that usage way up.

if its not unlimited, then it's useless! I'd better stick to my 5k-40gb monthly MTN plan. But since yesterday, mtn the fkup. Can't even see that particular plan

Wonders shall never end.
Even people managing 40GB are complaining that Starlink is "useless" because it's not unlimited.

The starlink router needs an ethernet adapter, to be purchased separately, for a wired connection.

If this is actually what they do cool. They may pull a spectranet and throttle the free hours as well.

why some people on nairaland claim they use more than 1tb in a month because they watch football and watch Netflix

those guys who claim that, sometimes, I wonder if they have a server or crypto mining rigs at home
