North Korea warns of ‘overwhelming’ response

Pyongyang said any American efforts to interfere with its weapons tests would be considered a “clear declaration of war”

North Korea has vowed to respond with “overwhelming” force should the US military attempt to intercept missiles fired during test launches. The warning came hours after Washington and Seoul carried out their latest round of air drills in the region, which involved at least one nuclear-capable bomber.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kim Yo-jong – the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and a senior figure in the ruling Workers’ Party – responded to a recent press report citing a high ranking US military official, who said the Pentagon would immediately intercept any long-range missile fired into the Pacific by the DPRK.

“If a military response such as an interception follows our strategic weapons test, which is conducted without any harm to the safety of neighboring countries in the high seas and airspace not under the jurisdiction of the United States, this will undoubtedly be regarded as a clear declaration of war,” she said in comments carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

She added that the North would be closely watching all military movements by the US and the “South Korean puppet army,” declaring Pyongyang is prepared to respond with “striking, swift and overwhelming action at any time.”

The rebuke came on the heels of joint air drills carried out by the US and South Korea on Monday, in which at least one nuclear-capable B-52H strategic bomber flew alongside South Korean warplanes as a show of force against the DPRK. Similar exercises were also launched last Friday, including a US B-1B bomber, while yet another drill will be held next week to simulate a response to a North Korean missile attack.

Washington and Seoul chose to stage the drills despite repeated objections from Pyongyang, which has denounced such exercises as preparations for an attack, also warning they may lead to “unprecedentedly persistent and strong counteractions.”

Over the weekend, North Korea appealed to the United Nations to stop the drills altogether, calling on the international community to “strongly urge the US and South Korea to immediately halt their provocative remarks and joint military exercises.” Kim Son-gyong, a top Foreign Ministry official, lamented that the global body has never condemned the war games despite their “clear aggressive nature,” going on to accuse Washington and Seoul of “irresponsibly raising the level of confrontation” in the region.

Who wrote this for Buhari? Buhari is not that intelligent.
If it's Tinubu now, I know he's capable of writing this.

Nigeria's Buhari Slams 'Unfair' International Debt Architecture

Struggling with their external debt burden is one of the burning issues for many African countries. Many believe that the problem is that certain countries cannot timely service their foreign debt due to the unfair terms stipulated by international financial organizations, which forces them to seek restructuring in the first place.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has castigated today's international financial organizations and their "unfair" debt architecture as favoring only advanced nations.
He aligned with the United Nations Secretary-General’s description on the global financial system as an "unfair debt architecture that not only charges poor countries much more money to borrow on the market than advanced economies, but downgrades them when they even think of restructuring their debt or applying for debt relief."

Speaking at the UN Conference of Least Developed Countries held in Doha, Qatar, Buhari called on developed and developing nations to offer duty-free and quota-free market access to the 46 countries mentioned on the UN least-developed countries (LDC) list; most of these countries are African ones.

In line with the UN rules concerning the LDCs, the countries listed should be granted such benefits as preferential market access, technical assistance, aid, and capacity-building on technology.
Buhari went on to shine the spotlight on the mounting debt burden shouldered by least-developed countries and emphasized the need to reform the international financial architecture so that poor countries become its priority.

Given these conditions, the Nigerian leader continued, the possibility for many countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals "remains bleak."
The head of state also said the development of poor countries is often impeded by challenges which are outside their hands and beyond their control, and this corroborates the need of countries for assistance in unlocking their economic potential.

Buhari made these statements as Nigeria struggles its foreign debt burden.
According to Finance Minister of Nigeria Zainab Ahmed, the western African country spent nearly 80% of its revenue on servicing its debt between January and November 2022, which amounted to $11.3 billion.
Besides Nigeria, there is a host of African countries grappling with the same problem

According to a 2022 report by the World Bank, more than half of low-income countries of which most are African, cannot meet their obligations on paying foreign debts.
One of the listed countries is Ghana, in Africa’s west, whose foreign debt amounts to 58% of its total $37.4 billion public debt as of October 2022. That said, the country has been trying to achieve its external debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework.
Along with Ghana, Zambia, in Africa’s south, is also pursuing debt restructuring, because the country is unable to pay its $13.04 billion external debt in a timely manner.

Earlier, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema lashed out at what he called "suicidal" interest rates comparing them to a "black mamba kiss of death".

Concerning the foreign debt trap problem, many African leaders have repeatedly urged African nations not to deal with international financial organizations due to "unfair" conditions.
For instance, touching upon the external loans of African nations in June 2022, Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo urged Africa to stop "begging" the West, emphasizing the key role of the African Development Bank and the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) concerning the continent's development.

"If we stop being beggars and spend African money inside the continent, Africa will not need to ask for respect from anyone, we will get the respect we deserve. If we make it prosperous as it should be, respect will follow," he noted.

There cannot be a right government until the West is put in their place. The interest of the West in developing countries is to make sure the developing countries remain impoverished so the citizens of those countries would find migration to the West for 'greener pastures' attractive where they're then exploited and exposed to modern day slavery. Their intent is to keep the West as a 'paradise' in the minds of the manipulated public. The West influenced the politics of Africa directly/indirectly. The right govt will get the 'Gaddafi treatment'

Truly sovereign states are no longer afraid of ‘Western diktat,’ Dmitry Medvedev says.

Russia is ready to help the world do away with the vestiges of a Western-dominated colonial past, former president Dmitry Medvedev has claimed. The official argued that as a nation “which has never had any colonies,” Russia is well-placed to take part in this process.

In an article published on Monday, Medvedev claimed that “geopolitical turbulence has cut open an abscess of the old problems of our world.”

The ex-president, who now serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, argued that the “malignant tumor of a colonial past” is a problem that calls for “international surgery.”

He noted that the Soviet Union played a major role in dismantling the colonial system of the 20th century.

“We, together with other countries, can now drive the final nail in the coffin of the Western world’s neo-colonial aspirations,” Medvedev proclaimed in the piece, posted on the United Russia party website.

As an example, the former president cited Argentina’s decision to renounce a 2016 deal with the UK with respect to the disputed Falkland/Malvinas islands in the South Atlantic, which were at the center of a military conflict in 1982.
Another War Is Looming: Argentina Withdraws From Falklands Pact
https://www.nairaland.com/7597244/another-war-looming-argentina-withdraws

On Thursday, Argentinian Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero said he had notified his British counterpart, James Cleverly, of the move during a meeting in New Delhi, India, on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

Buenos Aires “has proposed to resume negotiations on the question of sovereignty” in compliance with the mandate of the UN General Assembly and the world body’s Committee on Decolonization, Cafiero clarified.

Medvedev argued that the decisions to show French troops the door last year by two former colonies in Africa, the Central African Republic and Mali, fit this pattern too.

Medvedev pointed out, however, that there are still a number of dependent territories around the globe ruled by Western powers, such as the UK and France. He expressed skepticism that those nations will willingly relinquish control of the remains of their former empires.

As more and more countries “stop fearing Western diktat” and start to assert their national interests more actively, the former colonial powers are bound to lose their hold on the regions they once thought were theirs, the ex-president concluded.

Following the start of Russia’s military campaign against Ukraine last February and amid fierce confrontation with the West, top Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have increasingly advocated the establishment of a “multipolar world” which does not center around the wishes of one single superpower.

North Korea launches short-range ballistic missile toward Yellow Sea- March 9, 2023.

North Korea has launched one short-range ballistic missile toward the Yellow Sea, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Accroding to the agency’s information, the missile was launched at about 6:20 p.m. local time (12:20 a.m. Moscow time) from the Nampo area. "We are maintaining full readiness in close cooperation with the US. We’ve also stepped up surveillance and vigilance," the South Korean military said in a statement.

The North Korean General Staff said on Tuesday that artillery firing took place on South Korean territory near the border between the two countries, which Pyongyang viewed as a provocation.

On March 13, a joint exercise by the US and South Korea called Freedom Shield will begin. It will last until March 23. At the same time, there will be large-scale Warrior Shield field maneuvers. On March 6, South Korean and US servicemen held an air force exercise involving at least one US B-52H strategic bomber. Another air force maneuver involving a US strategic bomber took place on March 3.

North Korean authorities had previously warned that Seoul and Washington would face reprisals if they went forward with their ambitious plans for joint maneuvers. On February 23, North Korea launched four Hwasal-2 strategic cruise missiles toward the Sea of Japan.

Korea prepares for ‘real combat’ 11 Mar, 2023

Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called on his troops to prepare for “real combat,” as the US and southern Korea conduct back-to-back military drills on the Korean Peninsula. These drills, Pyongyang said, make the prospect of nuclear war “a realistic one.”

Kim monitored an artillery exercise on Korea’s west coast on Thursday evening, state news outlet KCNA reported on Friday. The exercise simulated an attack on an enemy airfield, which was targeted with a “powerful volley” of fire, the report stated.

According to KCNA, Kim praised his troops for being “prepared for real combat,” and declared that they should be “ready to fight at any time and be prepared for real actions rather than words.”

southern Korea’s military said that the exercise also involved “multiple rounds” of short-range ballistic missiles.

Kim’s statement is typical of those made by Pyongyang during periods of heightened US/southern Korean military activity. The US and Korea's south held aerial drills on Monday and the previous Friday, both of which involved US nuclear-capable bombers. Furthermore, the two countries will hold an exercise next week simulating a Korean missile attack, and on Monday will kick off the largest joint drills in the area for five years.

The Korean Foreign Ministry condemned the aerial drills in a statement on Tuesday. It claimed that “the risk of nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula is shifting from an imaginary state to a realistic one,” and that the forthcoming joint drills are of an “aggressive nature,” and could lead to a “catastrophic escalation.”

On the same day, Kim’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, warned that any attempts by the US or Japan to interfere with Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests over the Pacific Ocean would be treated as a “declaration of war.”

Pyongyang’s ICBM and nuclear tests were paused in 2018 under an agreement with former US President Donald Trump, with the US suspending or downsizing joint drills with Korea's south in return. Kim stepped up missile testing again in 2021, and the administration of US President Joe Biden responded in kind, resuming live-fire drills. Last year saw a record number of Korean missile launches and a flurry of US and southern Korea exercises, including a live-fire drill just 30km from the North Korean border.

How many drills do USA and South Korea need ? They seem to do a drill every second week so this suggests their training isn't too successful. I am beginning to understand why it was so difficult for South Korea to shoot down some DPRK drones that had been doing a tour of SK and then those multiple shots needed to take down some weather balloons in the USA. My word of advice to South Korea is find a better teacher because the one they have is still in training.

The real question is.
Why provoke a country (that according to the user above me) has nothing to lose and is also nuclear armed?

Korea reserves the right as a sovereign country to conduct defensive military drills from it's territory.
You wouldn't expect Korea to come to Lagos and start test firing missiles.

France tested nuclear weapons in Africa(Algeria). Korea doesn't have the benefit of testing it's weapons in foreign states as it's not a colonizing power.

The US can conduct it's unsuccessful drills in the US coastal waters/territory.

I agree with the conclusion of this user

No they will not attack them. That would be aggression and China would have basically destroy it's reputation as a candle light of hope. When defeating a monster, you must see that you do not become the monster your self.

You have to know that by default, the world is jungle, an intrinsically amoral place where the weak suffer. If humans are inately good, we won't need laws, because we will just do the right thing. So morality or politics is the mask that covers our animalistic nature.

So if you're strong, international law will work for you. If you're weak, it will work against you. It's same in Nigeria. If you're wealthy, the law and police will work for you, but if you're broke, hahaha lol

Either if the weak is an individual, country, animals, doesn't matter. Syria is weak, hence a stronger force will make it suffer. Though we should all act like humans and not operate on this jungle rule, but you must allow nature take it's place.

Syria should have made themselves strong like North Korea for example who have nukes, to not be at the mercy of the US. The US won't do this to China or Russia, they are strong. A monster fear another monster. But what China can do is to create conditions that will not let it happen again.

For example, Russia will hesitate invading Estonia, simply because it's part of the EU, NATO and the West. So the US have created conditions that will deter the strong (Russia) from pummeling the weak (Estonia). So what China could do is to incorporate countries into their own alliances. Like SCO (Shanghai security organization).

So if a stronger force wants to invade the weak, they will have to face their stronger ally.

North Korea says it has test-fired two "strategic cruise missiles" from a submarine ahead of the upcoming US-South Korea military drills, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports.

Meanwhile, the South Korean military said on Monday that North Korea had launched one unidentified missile from a submarine, according to Yonhap.
The missile was launched on Sunday from North Korea’s eastern coastal city of Sinpo, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
The missiles were test-fired from the 8.24 Yongung submarine during an underwater drill held on Sunday morning, Yonhap said on Monday citing North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The missiles hit targets in the Sea of Japan after "traveling the 1,500 km-long [932 mile-long] eight-shaped flight orbits for 7,563 to 7,575 seconds," KCNA said as quoted by Yonhap, adding that the drill confirmed the reliability of the new weapon system and "verified the current operation posture of the nuclear war deterrence means."

"While strengthening its monitoring and vigilance, our military is maintaining a full readiness posture in close cooperation with the United States," the JCS said in a statement quoted by Yonhap on Monday.

Meanwhile, KCNA reported that the test was to confirm "the reliability of the weapon system and inspected and judged the operational posture of the underwater-to-ground attack of the submarine units."

The agency also reported that the drills show the Korean People's Army ability to counter the "military moves of the US imperialists and south [sic] Korean puppet traitors."

On March 9, North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile. At the end of February, North Korea test-fired two missiles from a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS). Also last month, North Korea test-fired the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The launch was carried out from the Pyongyang International Airport and the missile reached a maximum altitude of 5,768 kilometers (3,584 miles), covering a distance of 989 kilometers, according to the South Korean military.
