To be fair, not a lot of great movies within the purview of the award window to pick from and it afforded the academy to make decisions on White guilt, reparations and pity.

The Best actress nod going to Michelle Yeoh, is totally worth it and the only other worthy contender to her was Cate Blanchett in that line up, going back to my opening paragraph, "not a lot of great movies to pick from". Michelle Yeoh's team actually went on a run of "guilt trip" campaign to ensure she got that win, and there might have actually be fire in the movie verse and backlash on "Caucasian" Supremacy at the oscars. The academy was not ready for that PR nightmare after Last year's débâcle.
I agree with most of what you said. Yeah, Oscars was avoiding another PR disaster this year, that's why you'd see movies like Top Gun Maverick and Way of The Water getting Best Picture nods. I feel The Batman could have easily swapped either of these two.

The Best Actor Award, is a straight up "pity award" and Collin Ferrell had a better performance and deserved it. Immediately i saw "The Whale", i knew Brandan Fraser was gonna get it, the movie was the arch-type oscar bait, with how Hollywood has been treating him over the past few years and it was somewhat infused into the screenplay of the movie, he was bulls eye set to win it, Just like Leonardo DiCaprio's win for "The Revenant". Happy for Brandan Fraser tho, all around good guy and a sound actor, that needs this oscar win more than ever to get him going again in Hollywood.
Yeah, Brendan Fraser's win looks like a pity award (although I'm yet to watch the movie) especially when you look at his Hollywood and Oscars history.
Anyways, it's deserved for me. Austin Butler and Collin Ferrell were the only competition with him.

Best Supporting actor was fair. The weakest line up i have seen in years so i called it between Barry Keoghan and Ke Huy Quan. Ke Huy Quan was charming in EEAAO... thoroughly deserved.
I absolutely agree on this. This year's Best Supporting Actor category is the weakest I've ever seen since when I started watching awards keenly. I feel that Barry Keoghan talk is just hype cos I ain't seeing what he acted that was so special. He could have easily been replaced by any of the top five supporting actors in All Quiet On The Western Front.

Best Supporting actress. This going to Jamie Lee Curtis was an absolute sham and a bad joke. She had around 15 mins screen time in EEAAO so I don't understand the rationale behind this. This was supposed to be between Stephanie Hsu and Kerry Crodon. Angela Bassett been nominated was probably for aesthetic, ain't no way mama was getting that award in a million years.
True. Stephanie Hsu should have won. She even exudes Best Actress vibes. Jamie Lee Curtis win I consider the joke of this decade.
Lol at the bolded. I was like how the fvvk ppl believed she stood a chance in that lineup. People wey take her performance seriously back then dey muzz me. grin

Best International Feature, again another weak line up, and "All quiet on the Western Front" Deserved it.
How many in the lineup did you see?? I was trying to see Argentina 1985 a week ago but couldn't shake of the sleepiness. 🙃

Best Original song, I thought "Hold my hand" deserved it but "Natu Natu" was also good.
Same thoughts here. I woulda preferred Hold My Hand but I also know Naatu Naatu had an incredible run to the Oscars (even tho I ain't watch it yet), so I wouldn't write it off.

Best Picture, considering the grand scheme of things, EEAAO was probably the most deserving of it. I mean, they got 4 out of the big 5 awards and the domination was so much that even it's main contenders like "The Fableman", The Banshees of Ineshirin" couldn't even get a sniff.
All in all, There wasn't many great movies or wow performances to pick from, says alot about the direction of movies these days btw. So i welcome the "A24" Supremacy 🙌, one of my favourite movie studio and they deserve all the flowers☘️🌺.
Yeah, there weren't many great films last year. I'm just glad at least we quickly had a flurry of these good award movies just before the year ran out. If not, it would have been an atrocious year especially when what most ppl remember is MCU's shithood.

A24 can continue winning and keep major talent studios like WB on their toes. WBD had a very weak year even by Awards film standards. Lucky they had Elvis to save them. It's becoming funny when last year's Best Picture winner was Apple TV+ CODA — now we got A24. 😃

What do you think of Pinocchio winning Best Animation? I feel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was better. But I wouldn't have a gripe with Guillermo's winning tho.
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by kendrick93(m):
oyaskii:
I don't even know how to explain it without been sounding ambiguous but "Top Gun: Maverick" was not a "Best Picture Oscar winning" movie material. Good movie tho and exceeded expectations by even been nominated.
Lmao..
Just because it's mainstream so it doesn't qualify to win an Oscar.
Reason why the Oscars lost credibility..
No amount of mental gymnastics would anyone propagate that would make me
believe EEAAO was better..
I rather take National Board of Review which named Maverick as the 2022 film of the Year.

Not Oscar winning material u say?
What bullsh!t

Re:Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022).

I could see why people would have a bone to pick about this movie but it is a beautiful motion picture that transcends every good thing about cinema.

I had to revisit this again because of the Oscar buzz and i think it wowed me more the second time around. People might find the themes too distracting coupled with the multi-varsal madness that seems to be leading one into a certain migraine but for those who are patient enough to unravel this themes carefully as the cast transverse the Multiverse with the excess baggage of human emotions and drama, it unravels a beautiful reward of a great lesson on love, life, humanity and the nihilism of it all.

Life as we know it, is as complex as it can be and out everyday choices and decisions impact the directions our life takes. EEAAO beautifully dives into this concept and coupled with human drama makes it a superior film. Tho, absurdity sci-fi might be the core theme of the movie, but it is firmly grounded in family drama.

Evelyn played by the now Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, is at the heart of it all, at first seems ill mannered but as the movie progresses and the Character of every human is showcased in multi versions of herself in multiple universe with immense and incredible talents to draw from these characters but deep down, she just a regular mom who just want to do taxes, laundry and get on with her day. she drives the entire story forward, she's the unicorn, shes the charm...

Evelyn's Daughter, represent the nihilistic sub plot of the movie. She sees absolutely no purpose to life no matter the decision one takes in life, across various life forms and across multi verse. This sets her on a collision course with her mom who is still undecided about the purpose of life, but she chooses to turn around this nihilism, to no avail, and ultimately decides to let her daughter make her own choice even tho she doesn't agree with her.

Finally, Evelyn's Husband, played by the now oscar winning Ke Huy Quan represents the love and humanity sub plot. introduced as an untroubled man who just wanted to get on with his day. But as the story progresses, reveals that he is in deep pain especially with his wife, but he masks this pain to perfection.

These stories are woven beautifully with proper character arcs in a way that is relatable to the viewer no matter the stage of life.

This is a complete film with well told story with absurdity sci-fi to the max, but with beautiful action sequence, a little bit of comedy and a whole lot of human drama to make you as close and as comfortable to the narrative the movie is trying to push.

it will age well, and i believe most people who detest it now, will come around, when they give it a try, few years from now.

Yes, the movie might have mirrored some of the events of his life, that doesn’t mean he didn’t give a performance enough to win him the award. I feel it will be unfair to cheapen his win with it.

If his performance was average, I don’t think Brendan would have gotten best actor nod in the first place, and winning the award wouldn’t even be in the picture.

Important notice:
Please, the movie is a slow-burn and annoying one. Don’t go and watch it because of my praise for Brendan and blame me later o.

I'll just say this here and now; A for plenty effort, but it was a wasted one. That movie's story gives me bad old Nollywood writing vibes. Couldn't they have done better than hot dog fingers for instance? The movie creeps me out sef.

the problem with making another Expendables movie is that most of the cast are too old to act a serious mercenary/military action flicks

The last movie was in 2014, almost 10 years ago...they were already on their last legs then, now they can no longer pull it off

Except the replace most of the cast, but who will they replace them with?

Hollywood is seriously lacking actors that can fill those roles...

The Expendables is not just a bunch of action stars but a bunch of hardcore action stars...tough men...
Not boys or jokers...

Apart from Jason Statham and maybe 1 or 2 other people, who else can fill the roles?

and so? Every actor has played all sort of roles

Fact remains their presence in action movies can tell you what you're getting...just their face alone

Recently, I watched CREED 2...
Just the sight of Dolph Lundgren, even though he was to old to fight in that boxing movie...and so I knew he won't fight
But Just his face alone...my blood dey boil...

You really think acting means anything in this context?

Did you not read how Terry crews said he was sexually harassed and groped by Hollywood honchos?

Or how Steven seagal was shaken down by the mafia?

Or how John Wayne template macho star is actually named Marion?

Dey there dey confuse acting with reality.

Top Gun Maverick IMO should have won Best Picture..

No way EAAAO or whatever was a better movie..
Lol, Maverick win Best Picture?

That film is the weakest in that lineup and I feel is an injustice to the other nominees. The film is good but it's definitely NOT BEST PICTURE MATERIAL. Getting nominated in that list of films sef is being too generous.

Acting wise it can't best any film in that lineup asides Avatar 2. Storytelling and writing? Same.

The major thing I see propelling Top Gun Maverick is cos of the present atmosphere and the inherent bickering/war between the Western world and the Eastern Bloc.
It easily resonates what Western audiences want to hear: "Superior America and Allies over Inferior Communists". Simple.

That's why it's like the next best thing after slice bread for them when you put Crimea and Ukraine in perspective.

MCU really stank up the whole year with mid, most of the movies that got the nod were out in the last quarter of the year and were basically late entries. That says alot. Luckily, 2023 has enough juice for a proper contest next year.

What do you think of Pinocchio winning Best Animation? I feel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was better. But I wouldn't have a gripe with Guillermo's winning tho.
Pinocchio was superior in animation style but Puss in Boots was superior in story. Either of them winning it is fine. Not a great year for animations either.

Its just the media shoving it in our faces, not many people actually sit in front of a TV to waste time on this fuckèry. Oscars wey don dey lose relevance for how long now. Over the last decade people have lost interest in that shît show, you can pull up the metric to see for yourself and check how many people were still tuning in before 2022. Viewership decreased to like 20 or 15% of what it used to be back when the Oscars still got people to give a fûck.

It was Will Smith's assault on Chris Rock that got it trending again last year which made some people to speculate that the slap might have been scripted. They can enjoy whatever attention they got from his stupidity for the time being before its popularity will continue it's downward slope on the bar chart. In a few years it will join the golden globes and co that absolutely no one gives a fûck about.
