I agree with you on this totally, We have to realize some truths about our country. We are poor. 500M budget is poor for a state like Anambra
From the 500M by the time we remove recurring expenditure what is left

Nigeria is a poor country. Without money there is little you can implement, Now when you add insecurity to it makes it double difficult

We have low income and a very high disproportionate population. We are more densely populated than most Africa countries

Look at our neighboring countries and their standard of living. We are just fortunate that we have oil, A post oil economy, what will make out standard of living better than Benin Cameroun Togo or Niger Republic. Add our ballooning population to it

The total population of Africa is 1.2bn, Nigeria alone have 1/6 of that depending on what estimate you believe. And what resources will cater for them
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-09-08/angola-tops-nigeria-as-africa-s-biggest-oil-producer-in-august?leadSource=uverify%20wall
According to a report I saw. Angola, Algeria Libya and Nigeria are the top 4 oil producing nations in Africa. Libya has a population of 6M(Like population of Oyo state) Angola has 35M (Population of Lagos + Ogun + Oyo), Algeria has 44M (Like Population of the entire SW)

All things being perfect Say no corruption, no oil theft everyone well behaved, See the challenge of revenue to population. By the time we now introduce human factors that in everywhere in the world some more in Nigeria than elsewhere. Then we see that problem for what it is
You have captured it well enough.

It's just that whenever one tries to make this kind of point, it is easily misinterpreted to mean you are making excuses for the ruling Government so the point is usually quickly dismissed for emotional reasons.

Out of the 36 states in Nigeria, only Lagos has a budget above 1 billion dollars. Some Universities in Europe are actually dragging similar budgets with our states here. Omo, Nigeria poor. The sad part is that majority of the country's population strongly believe that the country is rich and that the political ruling class are the one stealing all the money. And I don't blame them it's the lie that desperate politicians have used to win votes.

That was how Buhari came in saying once corruption is defeated and all leakages are blocked, Nigeria's wealth will be judiciously used to turn the country into Germany. Baba came in and saw that to even do just Lagos-Ibadan expressway, he needed to borrow. Nigeria politicians make me laugh a lot though. Go and see campaign promises from state Governors candidates, some are even promising 150k minimum wage. grin

I wish everyone well anyway.

That $400K is part of the cost of governance I doubt any state assembly will vote against what will keep the governor safe

A bulletproof car is standard for anyone in govt in a country like Nigeria

There are many public schools without desks and boards

It is even in Lagos that we have decent government hospitals. I am assuming 300 million can increase the supply of drugs to government owned hospitals by few months

Let us assume that we need a budget of New york to be able to make life habitable for its citizens.

We go dey alright finally

We needed access to the 36 States, but as a matter of urgency, we requested for 9 states. as of today, we have only been allowed access to 2 states, I am not impressed with INEC @inecnigeria

~Livy Uzoukwu SAN, Peter Obi's Lawyer

Like I said INEC will set this country on fire

You are actually sort of making Dayo's point for him. The fact that buying a bulletproof car for the governor means students might not get desks and hospitals might not get drugs tells you the country is poor.

Remember that two truths can coexist. The country is poor. Our leaders are corrupt thieves. Those are two truths.
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:16pm On Mar 16, 2023
How many bullet proof cars do you need as a governor to keep you safe?

This is outside shifting the conversation from the value of 400k to the sudden importance of governors security.

300 million will sort out alot in a poor community.
From water to renovation in public schools.

Be like say people think say 300 million na small money😂

Dayo, if you say we are poor, which I may agree with, then why are we running an expansive government that is expensive and riddled with high recurring costs?

To Izzou's example, if you say we are poor, why is a State Governor purchasing a car worth N300M? How many of such irresponsible purchases is Kogi incurring, especially when you consider the State barely generates anything? If 1 car that he may not return to the State after his tenure costs N300M, then what is the cost of all the cars he alone is using? We are poor but we are operating an expensive government across the 3 levels like we are the United States? Using insecurity as an excuse doesn't make it any reasonable.

Kogi State is poor and doesn't generate enough to keep it alive but somehow, Bello's wife is wanted by EFCC for the misappropriation of N3Billion belonging to the people of Kogi...What gives? Are we really poor or are our leaders corrupts and use expansive government as an avenue to steal from the people?

This is on the State level. Do you know what is happening in the local government/ LCDAs around the country? Is Nigeria poor? I think a legitimate argument can be made for that, especially when you consider our population and GDP in comparison to other developing or poor countries. However, it begs the question as to why we run such an expansive style of government.

We are running a US styled democracy which means we change govt 4 or 8yrs. Officials run for office after every term and there is a term limit

We decided that this is fair and better than what our fellow poor neighbors run otherwise we can have Paul Biya, Eyadema, Ghadaffi Mubarak styled democracy where one person rule for 20yrs and we don't waste money on elections and cost of governance

Other options include military or monarchy

US styled democracy is expensive

Lol.

We are poor truly. Until the budget is that of Texas, we may not be able to achieve much.

Even that 3 billion can only impact a community. It won't do much in a local government, talk more of a state.

Both are right. We are poor. A country of nearly 200m people whose budget is half that of a state of 6m people in Australia. Compare our budget, GDP, PCI, HDI or any other parameter you want to use to that of any country that is generally agreed to be prosperous.

The country is poor but the conscienceless leaders have been stealing the little that we have. While nearly everybody is suffering they are still stealing like we have money. Only 2 groups of people in Nigeria earn 1st world income, politicians and religious leaders.

First I am confident that our population figures are lies that's for sure.
We have two issues and those issues are as a result of the 1st issue.

1st we have thieves who steal the country blind as leaders and they are very wasteful
2nd we are currently broke as a nation as a result of the 1st reason.

The amount of money that a governor steals from his state is unbelievable and yet there's still more to be stolen which shows there's money available after a period of time.

Omo the matter does my head in.
See the number of projects did in rivers with 200 billion in his last year before leaving office.

When you are handing over to a hostile successor, you lay minefields for them

This is why outgoing administrations do massive employment exercises. To make the newcomer unpopular if he reverses them

Removing fuel subsidy will always be controversial. It is what destroyed gejs goodwill.

Buhari could have

1)Killed the subsidy after the elections, taking the blame and the fallout

2)Left the decision to his successor to decide how to implement

Instead he has decided to kill the subsidy on the day he is handing over to Tinubu. that is a deliberate setup and a ploy to ensure he starts his administration with a fire to put out.

It should be clear to you that this is not a friendly continuum handover.

Buhari is simply giving obidients another reason for a nationwide protest against the evil and cruel apc govt tongue of his successor
It's an APC policy, BAT said he'd remove fuel subsidy and no be today Buhari talk say e go remove fuel subsidy, he said so before the elections.

We share similar school of thought regarding this issue because 2 truths can mutually exist. The country is poor and numerous parts of the country live in abject poverty, however, we have the resources and man power to improve our situation but our system and size of government is intentioned to promote and tolerate corruption.

https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nigerias-senate-approves-2023-budget-holds-back-decision-loan-bonds-swap-2022-12-28/

The budget for the Department of Health in the State of New York is $203bn

https://www.budget.ny.gov/pubs/archive/fy23/ex/agencies/appropdata/HealthDepartmentof.html#:~:text=The%20FY%202023%20Executive%20Budget,for%20remaining%20health%20program%20spending.

For clarity one dept in one state in America has almost 5 times the budget of the entire country

Population of New York state is about 21M that is about the said population of Lagos state while the entire Lagos state budget is $2.5bn
In comparison to our population, Nigeria is really doing badly.

That's why some very harsh decisions need to be taken.

By the time you start calculating all the high profile corruption, misappropriation and money laundry cases since 1999, you will begin to understand why Nigeria is in it's current state. These are the ones that were unearthed oh, how about the ones we don't know about or that succeeded without any traces? How about the billions of stolen funds that are intermittently remitted to Nigeria from foreign countries and banks? You can not use poverty as excuse to ruin the country.

Using the cost of governance again doesn't fly. There are numerous types of Democracy. Democracies are adapted to fit the dynamics of every country. All the countries you used as example practice a type of democratic government that suits their dynamics. The developing/ poor countries in Africa have adapted theirs to fit what they want.
