Scotland’s parliament on Tuesday confirmed Humza Yousaf will replace Nicola Sturgeon as first minister, the devolved nation’s youngest and the first Muslim leader of a government in western Europe.


Yousaf, 37, narrowly won a Scottish National Party (SNP) leadership battle on Monday to clinch the top job, vowing to rejuvenate the stalled pursuit of independence for Scotland.

He then secured the nominations of a majority of lawmakers in a vote Tuesday to become the new first minister and will be formally sworn in on Wednesday.

Ahead of the confirmatory vote, Yousaf acknowledged he had “some very big shoes to fill” succeeding Sturgeon but vowed to “continue to ensure that Scotland is a positive, progressive voice on the world stage”.

Yousaf promised Monday to be “the generation that delivers independence for Scotland,” and said he would ask London promptly to allow another vote.

In Nigeria, the Obidients were shouting Islamization. One candidate in particular went from church to church telling Christians to take back their country. You sound like a tribalist yourself. You are still pained that your candidate was rejected in Lagos. Have you ever asked yourself why you wanted an inexperienced GRV to win? Was he better prepared for the position than Sanwo-olu, Jando or Funsho Doherty? Why were people from a particular ethnicity specifically interested in GRV? Was it because of Obi's endorsement? What is the track record of GRV? Answer these questions truthfully before you label other people as tribalists.

BTW: Let the SE show the SW how not to be tribalist by voting an Ijaw or Urhobo man as Anambra governor.

Opinion poll in Scotland is still in favour of the union. He truly has a lot of work to do. He is very young, dynamic and smart. As a descendant of Asian immigrant, he is anxious to leave a great legacy that will forever be studied in Scottish history.

That wasn't his crime at all. His "only" crime is that he hates the Yorubas with a passion and he never hid that fact- his tweets spoke loud and clear (He used his left hand to describe his father's house...only certain group of children do that in Yoruba land)

Many of them here would tell you they hate the English and will never support England in any sporting event. If the English plays any match, the will prefer to support the English opponent and tell you that any team they will support but not English.

They have been historically oppressed by the English and would like to leave the Union, but they feel so insecure standing alone possibly because the only neighbour Scotland has is England.

This comparison is incorrect and is generally a slippery slope.

The UK is a largely homogeneous society - whereas Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups, all divided over ethnic, political and religious lines.

UK leaders are selected by Parties, not directly by the electorates as applicable in Nigeria. Less room for politicians to exploit people’s sentiments.

It won’t take Nigeria 1 million years… we each have to do our parts and be optimistic for the future.
