I maintained a savings account number 0450837648 . On 16th, January 2023 , I got this email below from Guarantee Trust Bank

" NEW REFERENCE REQUIRED (OGBOGO FELIX AWEFEZE)

We would like to inform you that your reference confirmation was unsuccessful as the reference obtained from OGBOGO FELIX AWEFEZE was considered unsuitable.

Consequently, you will be unable to make payments or cash withdrawals from your account. To remove this restriction, kindly provide a replacement reference.


If the replacement reference is from a Guaranty Trust Bank Account Holder, please inform your new referee to log into his/her Internet Banking and follow the steps below;


Go to ‘Self Service’ menu, select ‘Reference Confirmation’ and click on ‘New Reference’ (your referee will need your Account Number to complete the confirmation).

Please be advised that a suitable referee must have an active current account, maintained and satisfactorily operated for not less than 6 months.

Thank you for banking with us. "

The following week I provided Leobons Data Systems with account number 0031558270 as my reference which was later confirmed against my account .

On February 10th 2023 , all my withdrawal was decline with a message " either the source or the target account has restriction " on 10th January 2023, I visited Effurun Branch, due to large crowd , I couldn't get in to lodge complain , I had to mailed & tweet ," Dear Valued customer, We empathize with you on this experience.

Kindly be informed that reference provided was rejected. Hence, you are required to provide another reference to replace the rejected one.

These are my questions

Why was my reference rejected ?
Why didn't Gtbank rejected my deposit ?
If my reference wasn't suitable, why wasn't I contacted via my email earlier ?

This has really led me to be financially disadvantaged as I couldn't settled my family bills .
If reference was so necessary on savings account I would have opted for current account.
I don't know where I would get a non salary current account holder to reference me to enable me withdraw my money .
Have u experience same ? This policy is really draconian!

You shouldn't put all these details online. That's how you expose yourself to scammers. Please Call their contact center or take the time to go back to the branch for resolution. A regular savings account does not require reference unless hybrid savings account.

I've already visited . They maintain same stand

I've visited my branch, they maintained same stand .
A lady also reached to my complain on Facebook citing same restrictions was imposed against her savings account .
She's lamenting if I can help her . I told her I'm handicap.

This is a serious matter. Mine is a current account but the same reference issues and I have funds in the account.

I have given them various references but none seem ok for them. I don tire like this.

But seeing how you outlined the process here, I am thinking that this was the likely problem. The people couldn't confirm because they weren't told how they could confirm. But seeing this now makes it even harder for a random person to help to reference someone because how I wan take dey follow up with the person now.

It has been resolved. They were surprised why restriction was placed

Why didn't they inform me earlier is the same question that I am asking.
