Yeah, the issue is, the land route goes through the Central African Republic, which is in crisis right now, and there is Chad, which is also in crisis right now, especially in its Eastern border.

The only viable route for now is the sea route..going to the coast of South Africa, then going up North to the Eastern Africa coast.

The United Nations does not have troops or military equipment. Member nations contribute troops and military equipment for peace keeping missions. There are many different ways in which member states can contribute to peacekeeping missions.

1) Troops and military equipment:

A country like Nigeria can contribute troops and military equipment like trucks, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, etc. to United Nations peacekeeping missions. The biggest contributors in this category are developing countries from Asia (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, etc), Africa (Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, etc) and South America (Brazil, etc).

Countries contribute troops to these mission in order for the troops to gain experience, in order to boost their international standing and also for humanitarian reasons.

2) Money

A member state could contribute money to UN missions. The biggest contributors in this category are developed countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, France, etc.

The United Nations pays allowances to troops on peacekeeping missions. For example, a Nigerian soldier on peacekeeping mission will receive his salary from the Nigerian Government and he will also receive an allowance (in dollars) from the United Nations.

The countries that contribute troops and equipment also receive funds for other reasons, for example, in this case, the United Nations might bear the cost of painting those vehicles in UN colours.

3) Logistics

I'll explain this with an example. The Nigerian Air Force has C130 aircraft with which it flies troops, vehicles and other equipment to where they are needed. However, the United States (from which we got our C130s) imposed sanctions on Nigeria after the June 12, 1993 elections were annulled. We couldn't get spare parts for the C130 or have them repaired. Many C130s were grounded in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Nigeria wanted to provide troops and vehicles for a UN mission in the early 2000s, but we didn't have enough C130s to fly them there. The United States Air Force contributed to the UN mission by using its C130s and C5 Galaxy to fly Nigerian troops and equipment to the country where the mission took place.


Those vehicles in Edo State are Nigerian Army vehicles. That exact same type of Toyota Land Cruiser (Buffalo) is being used in Borno and other states where there are insurgencies.
