A powerful lobby is currently pushing for the return of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as the shape of Tinubu’s presidency begins to emerge.

Sanusi, whose forte is risk management in banking, enjoys the blessing of Governor Nasiru El Rufai of Kaduna State who has the ears of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

As CBN governor between 2009 and 2014, Sanusi’s strong, independent leadership of the apex bank ensured relative stability of the financial market, especially after the turbulence of the global financial crisis of 2008/2009.

Besides, Naira’s value stabilised from around N155 to $1 for four years.

Tinubu, a seasoned accountant, is said to be predisposed to a new monetary management template, synergised with sound fiscal policy to immediately revitalise the national economy upon the assumption of office on May 29.

Sanusi is seen as a credible technocrat with a strong character to sanitise the banking/financial sector.

”The Nigerian economy is estimated to have lost N20trillion between January and March 2023, according to the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, a think tank, by way of deceleration of economic activities, crippling of trading activities, stifling of the informal economy, contraction of the agricultural sector, and the paralysis of the rural economy,” a source said.

Recall that Sanusi was suspended by the governor of President Goodluck Jonathan president after he caused shockwaves by alleging that $20bn (£12bn) in oil revenue had gone missing.

He had told a senate committee that of the $67bn of oil sold between January 2012 and July 2013, $20bn had not been accounted for.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, while saying the claim was unsubstantited, insisted the allegations showed “little understanding of the technicalities of the oil industry”.

Mr Sanusi is widely respected after undertaking reforms to the banking sector after his appointment in 2009 and named central bank governor of the year for 2010 by Banker magazine.

He vowed to challenge his suspension in order to preserve the central bank’s independence.

Sanusi is sound but cunny and tribal, he favoured the northerners in employment during his time and remembering all those controversial donations he made to the northern University, one would begin to question his patriotism.

Was it not same man that defended Jaiz bank? Am not saying establishing the bank is bad but the support and devotion of CBN governor to a particular bank reveals his religious tendency. Besides, Sanusi is seen to be radical, people like that can not get along with the Tinubu I know

If this is true then Tinubu has sense. Sanusi is the best CBN man we've had in recent times. Emefiele is a disaster..

To me this is a very wrong move from BAT. I am sure we have other sound minds that can occupy the position.

I don’t believe this news. Nigeria media already started their speculations and etc.

But if Sanusi is returned as CBN governor, I think it could be a good thing and Wale Edun stays at the Finance ministry.

But ever since Emefiele pull that stunt of disloyalty, I don’t want anyone to keep remnants of PDP into any vital position as important as CBN governor.

But Sanusi can help steady the current situation very faster as against a new hand. Let’s see how it goes.

They keep forming the cabinet for Asiwaju through speculations! Let the man form his cabinet abeg! Sanusi will be a good idea though, if he hasn't lost it since he's been out of active service for sometime

Emefiele is not loyal to anybody. He sold a dummy to Buhari and the man bought into it while Emefiele had other plans.

If he is truly loyal, why did he lie to Buhari about the number of new naira notes he got capacity to print at a given time?

What Buhari asked for is Cash swap, what Emefiele did is cash confiscation. That is not what is called loyalty, that is treachery.

Nothing spectacular about Sanusi tenure as CBN governor. In terms of loyalty don't even go there. He was removed as CBN governor and as Emir. He is very independent minded and has fired shot against Tinubu's purported victory at the election

Lol which strong Southern base.

Tinubu is a kind of man that will be fair in his appointment and I’m pretty sure his government will have people from all regions up there.

However, SW will get much in his government more than what we got during the mistake of Obasanjo presidency.

Lastly, Jagaban is a detribalized Nigerian and a democrat to the core. I am pretty sure every one will feel among in his government including those that never voted for him.

What SW crave for from Tinubu government is not appointment but a decentalised government that will empower there federating units. Carryout major restructuring and give us economic benefit and we will for ever be grateful to him.

We would not be like some region that were so fixated in appointment during Jonathan regime and forgot to demand for things that would improve their region
