I've a graduate trainee video interview with them tomorrow Sir, any valuable tips?
I'd be graduating in June/July and I only have a surface understanding of Spring boot.
How did this go…

HR insisted that the programme is specifically for graduates. She said I should email her upon graduation or reapply next time. 😭

I’m also a junior Java developer and from my personal experience, the easiest way to understand the Spring framework is by reading books.
Manning has several books on the Spring framework. Pertaining security, you should definitely read Spring Security in action.
That spring security book is a bit outdated now because it uses that WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter.

yh it is.
SecurityFilterChain is the new way.
It still doesn’t mean the underlying principles have changed.

Exactly Spring boot Auto-scanning and bean configuration, Read this book by Manning OP Spring boot in Action.

Note: I was told Spring boot adopted Servlet API, but I think some aspect where Servlet is exposed, like Filter chain. I used this package Quartz, SimpleJDBC Stored Procedure, Jackson. I really enjoyed Spring so much, It made no sense writing PHP. Interswitch exposed me to alot, with docker, you can fire multiple instances. Follow this man on Twitter Alex Adeyemo, he built an SSO for Interswitch.

That's a terribly outdated book. I enjoyed reading it at the time cuz the writer is entertaining, but the experience in real life work is far different from what is taught there

In what ways is spring better than php?

Performance? Oh, bro

1) that's highly subjective (what exactly is being measured? What percentage of applications require that functionality, etc?).
2) have you heard of roadrunner and swoole?

Note: I may come off as defensive but the truth is php gets too much undeserved hate. Think it's only fair for its detractors to indicate what metrics they draw their judgement from.

Fairs. One of the reasons I defend textual content over videos is the longevity of the dynamic ie you can always wake up and update it. But I just realised books discussing subjects under active research and improvement (eg software) fall short of that boon. I sincerely hope not to work with spring again. My experience wasn't palatable cuz I've used simplified, far better documented alternatives. And that company I used it with, took me 100 years into the past with nosql

But, never say never

I haven't heard of them, left PHP years ago. I doubt I'd use it, there are better tools, I don't see it as defensive but informative. Nice one

Awesome. You are a real gee. Surprised to see you still active on this board after all these years. You survived it being overrun by script jobbers and fraudulent miscreants. Your handle is the only one I recognise (and air. saylongcon)

Hope you give php another chance. We have something quite promising at the doorstep, ready to compete with your nestjs and co

Good day boss.

Quick question Sir.
I'm learning front end web dev. I have working knowledge of HTML and CSS. I'm at the basics of JS.
But styling and designing isn't my thing. I want to do real programming and not be stressing myself about styling, responsiveness and the likes.
Can't I learn backend only? Maybe utilize JS knowledge by learning nodeJS.

People on Reddit said a backend dev still needs to know how frontend works. What do you advise?

Knowing both helps much better, unless your job is just API and Integration.

I'm a junior java developer that has been using spring boot for about 1 year and 8 months now. It was really challenging learning it at the beginning. Everything just seemed so complicated. A lot of tutorials and articles teaching are outdated online. Spring security is literally one of the most complicated things I've ever had to learn. Documentation and tutorials on it are not straightforward at all. Another problem I have with spring is the errors you see on your console, they can be hard to read and understand at times.
hi are you still using spring boot

If you prefer video-based material, you should check out Chad Darby's spring course on Udemy. If it's a text-based you like, you should start with Spring Start Here[the latest edition].

My guy, e be like say this Spring Boot na real bone wey you dey try crack, abi? No worry, e dey like that sometimes. You know say na the first steps na im dey always hard pass when e come to learning new tech stuff. But once you don get the hang of am, everything else go start to dey flow.

No be lie, Spring Boot dey do plenty heavy lifting by making things simpler with its auto-configuration and all that jazz. E suppose make life easier but e fit still look like rocket science if you never really get wetin dey go on under the hood.

First thing first, make you no too hard on yourself. All of us get that one thing wey dey give us tough time to understand. The koko be to keep pushing small small. Try break down the concepts into pieces wey you fit chew. Instead of trying swallow everything at once, focus on understanding one concept at a time.

E good say you get clear reason why you wan learn Spring Boot - to add am to your backend skills repertoire. That na solid goal, and e go help keep you motivated.

For where to find help, Naija no dey carry last when e come to tech community. We get plenty devs wey sabi Spring Boot well well. You fit start by joining some Naija tech communities or forums online. Sites like Nairaland, Stack Overflow, and even LinkedIn fit be good places to connect with other Spring Boot developers. Plus, no underestimate the power of YouTube tutorials and online courses; some of them dey break down concepts into very simple terms wey go make e easier for you to understand.

And if you get specific questions or you dey stuck for some kind areas, no shy to ask questions for those forums or even here. The tech community dey always ready to help out.

Remember, persistence na key. Keep practicing, keep building small projects, and gradually, you go dey see say things go start to make sense. Spring Boot go soon become your padi wey you go dey yarn with freely. Hang in there, you dey on the right path!

Na so we dey do am. One step at a time, and before you know am, you go don become Spring Boot guru. Keep the spirit high, my brother!
