Are you aware medical students pay more than other undergraduates...in UI, an average undergraduate pay about 30,000 to 40,000. Medical students pay about #140,000 statutory school fees. Ditto for OAU, and many other federal schools.

The fact is Nigeria is bleeped up and a lot need to be done to rectify the situation. Brain drain is not only synonymous to the health sector, in fact the technology and financial industries has also had their fair share of experts relocating abroad. I know of a guy whom a leading Nigerian Bank is still paying his salaries even though he has relocated….working for the bank as a consultant coz there are no experienced persons to take up his role.

This bill is bidirectional to me as I believe the it is very unfair to train in Nigeria with the same dilapidated infrastructures, subsidized tuition and accommodation, and japa straight outa the country. It’s just fair to at least to a corporate responsibility to the society that gave u the skill in the first place.

Contrarily, the system is bleeped up.., they have refused to employ the doctors coz I know most doctors work in private institutions and only few are employed with the government and some are even unemployed. The employed ones are overworked, and exposed to varying degree of hazards. In fact some have to procure basic amenities such as gloves by themselves.

Like I said earlier, Nigerian doctors needs to know that all sectors of the country is bleeped up. And from my own biased perspective, doctor and nurses are still a top predators among the Nigerian educated population.

When I was in school, I fought for a lot of scholarships, all to no avail. Same with my colleagues who studied other biomedical sciences. But as a medical student ur chances of gaining a scholarship is like 70%. A number of my medical colleagues were earning above 600k per year as a student. They were on Mtn, Glo, Agbami, seplat etc. scholarships. In school, they have their own hostels and a lot of other privileges attached to them. They go on house jobs and are paid and their nysc always come with special packages.

In truth, a lot of Nigerians who graduated from other courses with good grades are still wallowing in unemployment….even ppl with first class are managing less than 100k jobs. That is the reality of Nigeria and that is why the whole system is bleeped up. And to me, the doctors are still a privileged few no matter how we construct the story.

I want Nigerians to know that Nigeria is not US and not UK. In fact those countries are in the zenith of global economies. Nigeria is in Africa and is one of the poorest countries in the world though with limitless potentials but cursed with unproductive and unpatriotic leaders.

I’m not in support of the bill but Nigerian doctors should be a little more appreciative coz they are far better than many

Insecurity: Recruit 50 million youths into army, Tinubu urges FG

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, on Monday, urged the Federal Government to recruit at least 50 million youths into the Nigerian Army to boost Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, banditry and all forms of internal and external security threats confronting the nation.

Tinubu spoke at the 12th colloquium to celebrate his 69th birthday in Kano State.

He said, “We are under-policed and we are competing with armed robbers and bandits to recruit from the youths who are unemployed —33 per cent unemployed?”

“Recruit 50 million youths into the army,” he stated, adding that “what they will eat —cassava, corn, yam, will grow here.”

The APC chieftain, while reacting to recent statistics by the National Bureau of Statistics that over 23 million Nigerians are jobless, also urged the government to create jobs for youths in the agricultural value chains.

He said, “Don’t talk about illiteracy, anybody who can hold a gun, who can handle a gun, who can cock and shoot is technically competent to repair a tractor in the farm.”

Isn't that the reason a medical doctor earns, on average, far more than other graduates? A newly graduated house officer is over 200k in teaching hospital.

It's very important. If U have many products, sell them on jiji with paid ads. Bro U will make it. I worked with a laptop company that posts products daily. Everyday we post a minimum of 20 laptop pictures. We repeat the same thing daily. It doesn't matter how many pieces of the laptop we have, we just keep posting. Back 2 back. And in less than one week U will start receiving calls.

When I was in a Federal University they pay the same amount with even Botany, Agriculture....Apart from states that had to increase Tuition from Fashola tenure other states follow suit even many criticize Fashola for that but today alot of States are doing the same ..

To train a medical doctor in UK/USA is far greater than it is here, and those countries are aware.

Those who study in private universities (who are unsubsidized presumably) are free to japa.

However those in public institution with subsidized training must repay, via at least 5-10yrs work, before japaing

Problem is Medical doctors in Nigeria expect to be earn what thier counterparts abroad, which is not realistic.

Has it occurred to them that part of the reason thier counterparts earn so much is because of the humongous cost of thier training abroad??

Check for yourselves, the average US graduate is in debt as a result of loans taken to cover thier training, and it takes them many years to offset.

It's not about how long a doctor has to practice in Nigeria before allowed to move abroad. It's all about the corruption in Nigeria.
Government establishes a hospital in Nigeria, well equipped, and employs doctors to run the hospital. The doctors would use the government hospital and equipments as private practice in mushroom clinics the doctors established in the town the hospital is located. Patients are taken from the government hospital to the private mushroom clinics, housed there, the doctors use the hospital equipments to diagnose and treat the patients who pay the doctors. With time, the hospital and its equipments dry out.

Doctors who want to earn as much as the political office holders ruin the health sector in Nigeria.

The focus seem to be only on doctors but what about nurses dentist pharmacist and even radiographers? I know alot of radiographers who are out already infact one of them with over 12 years practice told me he is not sure we have up to 10000 radiographers left in Nigeria. The root cause should be the focus, imagine a state government(Rivers state) not giving employment for over 7 years.
It's heartbreaking.The government has a huge role to play,so stopping people until 5 years won't change anything. We b 9ja,alternative to dis license go appear, trust me.

That bill made sense only to people who prioritise waste as a lifestyle. It costs a lot to emigrate to a country which offers better value for labour but people are doing it anyways, and in large numbers too. Hell! Nigerian medical professionals are in high demand outside the shores of our country. And instead of the government to seek ways to make here like there, they're trying their usual 'shut down whatever you can't control tactics'.

The reasons teachers don't have much advantage like doctors is the required teaching qualifications. Is the government aware though that UK for example has made it easier for teachers in Nigeria to apply for QTS which once approved, they can just emigrate and get a teaching job without having to take an additional course?

The government cannot be in the hospitals all the time to checkmate the doctors involved in diverting patients in government hospitals to their private clinics. A case for example is the Imo state University Teaching hospital in Orlu. All efforts of government to checkmate doctors in the ugly phenomenon have not succeeded.
