The senator is right.
The bill negate human rights of those doctors.
Also it will fizzle down and decline the progress of medical field.

Doctors should not worry, things will improve greatly soon.

Apc government will deliver.
The jagaban.

I'm sorry to say this. Nigeria is gone past the state of repair. Every sector is decayed. Where is the cleaning going to start from? That is why I was saying if I'm Obi I will not contest the election results. To fix the country is herculean task to begin, especially when u stole the mandate. Note, I did not vote for any person and will never vote. The reason is I don't understand why INEC head will be appointed by the presidency. It makes no sense

For Nigeria, u buy 2005 tokunbo or fourth used car and call pastor to pray for am, then u celebrate the big achievement. For Canada here, 2024 car na just any other car. Nobody send you. Nigeria is gone. No hope! I sorry O.

The only condition I can support the bill is for them to include in the bill that every elected person in Nigeria will not travel abroad for any medical reason for the period of his/her 4 years tenure, since they claim that graduates must serve the country for 5 years, they should also patronize that service from the graduates for 4 years in Nigeria....

They will then claim that they traveled for vacation and took ill while on same vacation.

Let them address the root issues rather than chase shadows
Once all root issues are addressed
- Brain drain will flee
- We will have more jobs here
- Naira will stabilize
- And all will be well
But this man's proposal is more or less the same as the bill he is slamming. Medical education is already subsidised in Nigerian public Universities hence why they're proposing this 5 years stuff.
Re: Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe Slams Brain Drain Bill by alezzy13: 9:20am On Apr 09, 2023
Medical students could be obliged to choose between paying the standard market rate for their training or opting for government-subsidized training. Quality education in its real sense can't be free.

Those who however opted for subsidized training after their qualification would in return be compelled to work in Nigeria for a certain time or refund the subsidies. This is a practice obtainable even in advanced countries such as the UK

This is the best recommendation IMO. Yes, some may rant and curse, but it's only fair.

To train a medical doctor in UK/USA is far greater than it is here, and those countries are aware.

- And who is a Nigerian? The one that protest injustice, then gets shot in the head and his/her lifeless body gets dragged on the dirty floor and hauled into a rickety van to be dumped in an undisclosed pit or unmarked grave, with others cheering on? Dey play.

Always blaming other people for our failures.

In 1830, our kings and chiefs were selling their own people especially those they considered troublesome to whites in exchange for mirrors, salt, guns etc. In contemporary times, our politicians are selling the citizens indirectly by stealing their commonwealth and leaving the country underdeveloped so that they're forced to emigrate.

You keep blaming the whites for your failures. 400yrs of slavery? Has to be a choice- Kanye West

Tell me what job opportunities do they have. Poor salary, no job , poor facilities, poor working environment , poor education even for medical student. No work security,
I will only support such bill only if all political post both elected and appointed will not travel for health care services and there children too must study in Nigeria.

Of the doctors left in Nigeria, how many are employed by the government. You guys are really funny. So you want them to keep all medical graduates in the country to do what exactly? What are the plans to employ them, in what capacity, on what salary scale.

Are doctors the only students trained on subsidized education?

Do you know how much more a doctor spends on his training from his personal pockets?

Are you aware most of the infrastructure in federal medical schools are provided by alumni? If you kill that spirit of "alumnism" , what do you think will become of all these funds. Recently, a former graduate from Ife donated about 1million dollar to the school, an alumni..

Are you aware medical students pay more than other undergraduates...in UI, an average undergraduate pay about 30,000 to 40,000. Medical students pay about #140,000 statutory school fees. Ditto for OAU, and many other federal schools.

You wrote well but you are bringing the cart before the horse. You stated in your writeup that the government needs to increase the doctors’ salary after they pass the bill. To think of it, will the bill have been necessary if the salaries were upped and other incentives put in place for a conducive work environment? Is that not what they should do first and see if there will still be brain drain. Even if there will, we are pretty guaranteed it will reduce to its barest minimum as we can’t restrict people from movement. So in essence, let them make the working environment conducive and see them staying rather than championing a bill that is anti-labour.

Excellent proposal by Oloriegbe.
If you pay the standard/premium fees for your training (£35,000 per annum), you're free to japa but if you pay the Government subsidized fee (N500,000 per annum), you should work for 10years with the state or Federal Government.

I Support, if you are also in Support, say Aye.
The Ayes have it

Let's use our brains here. £35,000 (~N33,000,000), is that really the annual cost of training a medical doctor in Nigeria?

The fact is Nigeria is bleeped up and a lot need to be done to rectify the situation. Brain drain is not only synonymous to the health sector, in fact the technology and financial industries has also had their fair share of experts relocating abroad. I know of a guy whom a leading Nigerian Bank is still paying his salaries even though he has relocated….working for the bank as a consultant coz there are no experienced persons to take up his role.

This bill is bidirectional to me as I believe the it is very unfair to train in Nigeria with the same dilapidated infrastructures, subsidized tuition and accommodation, and japa straight outa the country. It’s just fair to at least to a corporate responsibility to the society that gave u the skill in the first place.

Contrarily, the system is bleeped up.., they reduced to employ the doctors coz I know most doctors work in private institutions and only few are employed with the government and some are even unemployed. The employed ones are overworked, and exposed to varying degree of hazards. In fact some have to procure basic amenities such as gloves by themselves.

Like I said earlier, Nigerian doctors needs to know that all sectors of the country is bleeped up. And from my own biased perspective, doctor and nurses are still a top predators among the Nigerian educated population.

When I was in school, I fought for a lot of scholarships, all to no avail. Same with my colleagues who studied other biomedical sciences. But as a medical student ur chances of gaining a scholarship is like 70%. A number of my medical colleagues were earning above 600k per year as a student. They were on Mtn, Glo, Agbami, seplat etc. scholarships. In school, they have their own hostels and a lot of other privileges attached to them. They go on house jobs and are paid and their nysc always come with special packages.

In truth, a lot of Nigerians who graduated from other courses with good grades are still wallowing in unemployment….even ppl with first class are managing less than 100k jobs. That is the reality of Nigeria and that is why the whole system is bleeped up. And to me, the doctors are still a privileged few no matter how we construct the story.

I want Nigerians to know that Nigeria is not US and not UK. In fact those countries are in the zenith of global economies. Nigeria is in Africa and is one of the poorest countries in the world though with limitless potentials but cursed with unproductive and unpatriotic leaders.

I’m not in support of the bill but Nigerian doctors should be a little more appreciative coz they are far better than many

We are in Support of the Bill. Professionals in Nigeria are trained with less than $1000 for the entire program, where in the world is that done, 5yrs isn't a much of a time.

This is clearly a wrong message and signal! Government of the day must rise up to the occasion and proffer solutions in medical field.

Doctors in Nigeria are treated like animals, the Nigerian government should as a matter of fact ban medical tourism for government officials. The policy is not only laughable, it is a figment of imagination by its supporters!

But isn’t it obvious it is the government fund they are using? If they are being paid for a call to service and not paid in millions or billions at the end. You will see that most of them will be uninterested in politics or leadership. It is because they are getting that huge amount of money is why they recruit to snatch ballots, murder their opponents and all. I totally support the recommendation by the senator.

Those who study in private universities (who are unsubsidized presumably) are free to japa.

However those in public institution with subsidized training must repay, via at least 5-10yrs work, before japaing

Problem is Medical doctors in Nigeria expect to be earn what thier counterparts abroad, which is not realistic.

Has it occurred to them that part of the reason thier counterparts earn so much is because of the humongous cost of thier training abroad??

Check for yourselves, the average US graduate is in debt as a result of loans taken to cover thier training, and it takes them many years to offset.
