I haven't written a single line of code since 2009, and I haven't been a technical resource since December 2016, so I don't keep up trends or innovation in those areas.

As such, I might not be the best person to address your question on combined roles. What I can tell you however, is that I haven't seen it before.

I believe that any frontend developer will be more than capable of UI/UX design, since they have to turn the vision into a usable product. I doubt there is a front end coder alive that has never had to wireframe/prototype a product concept, and most of the ones I've worked with are more than competent with the likes of Figma and/or Balsamiq.

The difference between Design and Engineering functions in most shops is purely for organisational reasons rather than skill/capability based.

When you're working in an agile environment, with finite resource, looking to show-and-tell something at end of each sprint, you cannot have your valuable Engineering resource gathering requirements or refining product backlogs.

I suppose if budgetary concerns or flatter organisational structures are in play, a company might look to blur the lines between UI/UX and developer, but I haven't seen it happen.

Maybe Disstroy might have a different view.
