Taking a career break is very okay although here in Nigeria it's very uncertain if after taking the break and later ready for work then find it difficult to get a job. I personally did take a career break. I really needed it after working for close to 10 years non stop.

To be honest. Depends on the individual entirely. Everytime i took a career break, it's because i needed to update and upgrade my skills.
Merit? Income and Job availability increase.
Demerit? Uncertainty, being broke for a while, leaving comfort zone.

Whatever. Just do you.

career break to do You dont have annual leave ni. Future employers will see you as an unserious person unless you quit to maybe go learn a new skill.

For me, I knew I had need for it, when my job routine became f**king monotonous with nothing challenging.

How did I go about it?
Like phemmy mentioned, I tried doing other stuffs in same field.
Saved up some money.
Back to school, to be done next year…

This is one of the BEST thing I've heard on NAIRALAND.

God bless you for this insight, we learn everyday.

If you are still interested in your current career, safest way is to get a new job and push the resumption date as far as you can.

E.g You can tell them you need to give current company x months notice.

Before taking such decision, be sure to dot your "I"s and cross your "t"s. I once worked with Shell back them, I left for a career pursuit with a good arrangement of returning back when I was through, little did I know that government difficult and bad policies could suddenly spring up one day that will affect oil producing companies, and that totally knocked me off. But now I learnt my lessons.

Career is whatever one does to earn a living, it's not only tied to professional or office jobs, it can be any job.

as long as you’re doing 9-5, there’s no career break.
