The fact that so many people on here can wave away such a sight as "propaganda", or try to excuse it by saying "it happens everywhere" or "they were eating from paper plates" only goes to show how thoroughly Nigerians have internalized failed government and abject poverty as their rightful lot in life.

An over-emphasis on white-elephant capital projects at the expense of less flashy but ore impactful programs has been a failing of Nigerian governments at every level since the 1970s, which is why we are where we are today with rotting infrastructure and a half-starved, half-illiterate populace. Unfortunately, the only way politicians know how to show Nigerian voters that they are "working" is by plunging huge sums into high-profile facilities like this airport, even as basics like primary healthcare, clean drinking water, high-quality schools and the like go neglected. Who can blame them, given how clearly it seems to work, from all the defensive comments on this thread?

Nigerians are hypocrite,we see this everyday, it's common at parties and social events.We should stop pretending, Nigeria is a poor underdeveloped country trying to find her feet.

First off, the rate of poverty hasn't "continued dropping" over the last 8 years, it has substantially increased. Second, one of the main reasons why this drop didn't occur, and isn't as guaranteed as you want to argue, is because so many Nigerian political leaders squander huge sums on white elephant projects like this airport, even as hungry children are left to eat leftovers on the pavement. What are the odds these starving children will be well educated enough to work as the software developers and chip-manufacturers of tomorrow, given such strange governmental priorities? Where will the money come from to bring them to that level?

The truth is that i'm not a fan of Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state. He really did well in infrastructural development in Ebonyi state but failed woefully in terms of human capital development.
But i believe that government is a work in progress, so i think the next governor should focus on providing employment and reducing the poverty rate in the state.

I'm sure this dumb post of yours will feed, clothe and school those poor children we saw sitting on the tarmac, for whom you clearly feel no empathy whatsoever. That's the strange thing about tribal warriors like you, you only seem to "love" your tribe in the abstract, but are willing to tolerate any amount of suffering by your tribesmen if that is what you need to preserve your fragile self-esteem.

For what it's worth, I don't see any excuse for any state governments to be building airports, or other such high-profile projects, especially given that private-sector investors would do a better job of keeping costs in line and running the completed projects. The entire point of government should be to step in only where the private sector alone cannot carry the load, not to squander millions of dollars on facilities no one will use. This holds true whether we are talking of Oyo, Ekiti, Ebonyi or anywhere else, so there goes your ridiculous effort at excusing irresponsible governance.

The truth is that they don't care in the slightest about the "kinsmen" they claim to be defending. Any decent human being with compassion would be shocked and angered by that image, but none of these tribal warriors give a damn, because in the end they only care about the image of their tribe in the eyes of others (and how that reflects badly on them in particular), not about the actual well-being of their supposed kinfolk.
