Is there any doctor in Nigerian government hospital whose one year wages can enable him/her take a two weeks annual holiday in Europe or America?
Four months wages of a Nigerian doctor in Europe can afford him/her a two weeks holiday in Europe or America.
Worse, a doctor, and indeed, any Nigerian, can easily get killed or raped by the Boko Haram Islamic terrorists or its offshoot, the bandits, fighting for a Nigeria to be governed with Islamic Sharia criminal justice system; the same unconstititional justice system earlier adopted by the political and religious leaders of the 12 northern Nigeria states; the same cause which led the Buharideens to organise the predidential election heist of 2023.
Making a law to restrain doctors escape from Nigeria without sanitising the political system is waste of legislation time.

I'm sure most will say , en give us loans too.
98 percent of Nigerians will not pay it back. They will start looking for excuses why they should not pay back.
Medical school in the US will cost average of around 200k Dollars . That's a loan that most Doctors are struggling to pay back. I hear them complain on daily basis.

If I can enroll for medical class and I know I won't get a licence to practice after 5years, what will stop me from crossing to a neigbouring country or a foreign country to finish my studies and come earn my practice licence once with better pay and better working conditions.

Nigeria has a really messed up system I agree but sometimes let's be rational in our thinking. I have friends who were lucky to get federal government scholarships, TetFunds, etc to study abroad, a lot of them after few months would call you and be like "oboy wetin you still dey do for dat useless Naija, Nigeria hopeless, Naija this, Naija that, blah, blah". Thesame country who fund your trip and pays your fees ?! These are people who cannot afford such on their own.

On the topic, I know a good medical education cost a whole lot everywhere in the world, even in good private schools here in Nigeria but government has been able subsidize to a point that medical students in government universities pay almost nothing. I think on that part, Ngige is right. Having said that, our doctors would love to stay if they politicians stop looting funds needed for equipping our hospitals, our doctors will stay if Ngige, his family and fellow politicians start using our local hospitals, the monies they waste on medical tourism if retained within our health sector would do a great deal to cub brain drain. You train these people for "free" yet you can't entrust your life to them.

If you think medical education is free in Nigeria, then go and read it and stay back in Nigeria to practice it.

Medical students pay fees that are quite higher than what other students pay and spend huge amounts buying expensive foreign books at a time their counterparts like you in other disciplines are buying handouts for peanuts from their lecturers.
And you're saying they're trained free?

Surprisingly, no one is talking about these other folks who pay lesser school fees.

How about the accommodation fees? You built free houses for the medical students too?

My parents sometimes had to sell some of their valuable properties to be able to afford those fees and pay for those expensive books.

It's plain stupidity for anyone to wake up and say medical education is free in Nigeria. Any law that's going to be made in that regard must apply to every Nigerian, otherwise, it'll be vehemently resisted.

You would have made more sense if you had said all graduates and professionals who enjoyed subsidised education should not move abroad.

Have you or someone dear to you been traumatised before from being kidnapped or attacked by armed robbers? Do you know someone who died because Nigeria happened to them? That's the damn reason why people who have the means move abroad!!

Why not tell the government to fix the country?

Why not tell the government to propose a bill stopping medical tourism for all public/civil servants including politicians getting salary from the government? So they can fix the Nigeria health sector!

Nigerians owe the Nigerian government NOTHING! If the Nigerian government decided to make education FREE, it's a welcome development. Nobody forced them to do so. If they decide to make education expensive and make student loans available to every Nigerian, it's also a welcome development. Nigerians will have to decide whether they want to take the student loans or work and save to fund their own education.

To be fair to Nigerians, the much touted "subsidized education" in your write up is not even affordable and accessible to millions of Nigerians judging by the standard of living in the country.

In the US and elsewhere where education is available to everyone who wants it, many people refuse to take student loans, and many private organizations and philanthropists sponsor education for those who can't afford them, people choose whether they want to go to college or work first and save for college.

For you to think that subsidizing education entitles the government to stop people from deciding where to practice their careers, I don't even know what to tell you. Just plain ignorance, that's all!

Your write up stinks of arrogance and ignorance. If Nigeria government increases the cost of education fares, won't be part of people to criticize them heavily? If the US you mentioned, not everyone is qualified to apply for student loan and not every intending students will get scholarships. In case you don't know, there are many students in universities in this country that are on scholarships both governmental and individual sponsored. I can't be blame of you because of the myopic government we keep having in this country.
