So if a man leaves a will with his lawyer transferring all his assets to his wife and female children what will the uncles do ?

They will not respect the wishes of their late brother ?
it's first time I'm hearing females Inherit properties of their parents oo

Maybe life doesn't revolve around me after all

Omo eeh, in Igbo land, especially when it comes to properties especially land, don't take those uncles for granted, those guys can do and undo.. more especially if you re unfortunate to have the wicked ones..

That's why a male child is almost a priority in my tribe, infact if you re a woman and you have not born a male child, your kinsmen will start from there to dey chance you for a start, then If you downplay the pressure, when you die without giving birth to a male child, na there you kill everything kpatakpata, in some cases, those unlces and kinsmen will chase your woman and her female child out.... But if you happen to stand your ground, you will be receiving different missiles from both immediate and nuclear families even extended uncles..

My tribe no dey mercy for people wey no born male..

Currently I'm handling a disputed land we shared of my dead uncle who didn't marry,

We called the elders to settle disputes for us, Dem no even allow my mom come dia come talk, unless if she is invited, normally she gave 15 yards, then when she is invited, she comes forward, and after talking, she takes back seat at her 15 yard position..

It's me that's taking the position as a man in the family because I had to travel 🧳 home for the dispute..

My tribe no dey regard women at all.. Dem dey see women as vessel..

why do you guys overbeat these standards our forefathers have set giving these girls mouths to talk thrash?

The primary ambition of a Nigerian/African lady should be to find a husband.. when she finds one, she goes there and Inherit what her husband has and builds family from there..

Will she eat at her husband's place and also eat at her father's place?

Traditionally a woman shouldn't even meant to have a share on his father's property unless maybe by will..

If the man has sons, let the sons handle them.. if they perish, they perish
This kind of mentality has no place in the 21st century. This is disgraceful

I think for Yorubas its mostly by age

you are mid 20s, who will invite you for family meeting where your 50, 60yr old aunties and uncle dey?.
Even if na 1 week you take senior am, Than 1 week na your advantage for life

At mid 20s the only time they will call you is Seankafor, Help us open the gate for Daddy Tunde, or bring water for Mommy Bose

Can a wife inherit property from her late husband in your culture?
without giving birth to a male child?

That is impossible unless your uncle's are God sent.. infact it's 97% impossible

If you don't have a child at all, you will be sent packing the minute your husband died

My dad's last born sister married in ngwa abia state, she married almost at 40 years so she was barren we warned her to adopt, but been a church fanatic, she thought miracle could happen.. instead life happened and her husband died, they chased her away and she is currently in my father's house now doing menial jobs and house chores for handouts..

My dad willed everything to my mum while he was still alive.

Infact, e put both their names on every valuable property he had

When he died, nobody had the guts to show up for any sharing formula. And luckily for us, some of what he had saw us through life in those challenging times.

A man should always be wary of where he is coming from. If you know you have ravenous wolves as relatives, use your head
Omo! Thank God for dad’s wisdom. I usually think it’s just nollywood over-bloating the whole thing, didn’t know those things still happen now.

Where issues usually arise are in polygamous settings where the man has multiple wives
Without a will.
In most cases, the children of the first marriage will use that opportunity to settle beef vs the younger women who deprive their mother marital joy

So its common that the children from first marriage will corner every choice property and only give remnant to the younger wife kids

Technically in Christian setting, Only the first wife is recognized by law. So the younger wives, better hustle make the man put things in your name before he dies otherwise na sorry be your name

Some of the very young wives might even have to start nacking the older kids who have access to the properties to secure their future

E.g like a rich man dies his first set of kids are around 50yrs but his youngest wife is 30s with younger kids. We have had instances where the young wife miht have to use her feminine appeals on the children of the eldest

I can imagine Ned Nwoko has kids older than Regina, If Ned dies today, How Regina wan survive or get access to some of Neds properties without a will or without warming the bed of the older sons
The bold was the case of Kola, MKO Abiola’s son. Alaye was privileged to have already been an adult before their father’s demise .

You know the man MKO likes women really well and was always having them at his beck and call being one of the richest in the land. Kola dealt with some of those young wives, they saw shege . Some of them had to go back to their professional career before baba married them in order for them to see their children out of schools

Kola told all of them to go for DNA and only exempted children from Simbiat. His own blood brothers and sister alone were exempted

All the others he gave them a deadline to go for DNA and anyone who failed or didn't show up was automatically disowned. I am sure some of the younger wifes fit don dey meet Kola behind to arrange their future

in my tribe, when the elders wants to talk, it's either the male elders have a meeting or the female elders have a meeting on their own

Nothing like mixture, men and women elders sitting on one table and discussing..

The males here don't rate women at all

It happens. But then it also depends on the kind of uncles you have. The wicked and greedy ones will want to chance the woman since she has no male child.

These days though.. things are getting softer. It's no longer a rigid tradition like it used to be.

Unless those uncles are wicked and greedy.

All they had to do was protect and train you guys with what your dad left behind. Then hand over everything when you are all grown.

If the child were still young, they would compel her to marry one of his brothers, so that the wealth would remain in the family

In some community in Yoruba land , even the male child of a female from a royal family can ascend the throne .

For example if ur mum is from a royal family and it’s time to select a king, u as her son can be elected king despite the fact that ur dad is not a prince ; only ur mum is a direct princess .

Why should they have to protect and train us?

The man's wife is not old enough to take care of her children?

That aspect of the tradition is just wicked; having wicked uncles made it worse

If you are monogamous, Say 1 man 1 wife 4 kids, the property automatically goes to the wife and when she dies the kids automatically share

Most property issues is with polygamous family, monogamous are usually straightforward

Let’s just hope the rigidity of some of these traditions get more and more relaxed with passing of time o.

I can’t imagine my sister being in such position where an uncle comes and starts laying claim to properties acquired by their son and my sister in the course of their marriage .

I'm not really opposed to the inheritance of landed properties especially, and critical assets in general to male children, it's a good way to keep wealth within a family line.

What the Igbo culture/other cultures where the patriarchal distribution of properties is the norm is to find a way to have the interest of women protected in property distribution, maybe certain percentages get allotted to female children. Personally, I no really owe my children properties like that, wife and grandkids maybe, or as the spirit leads....then again, it depends on the level of wealth I acquire too cheesy

Male cousins, uncles and brothers of the deceased coming to drag properties is just strange.

So what is the incentive of the wife to contribute to her marital home to build assets when after her husband dies, One uncle will show face

Do women get encouraged to buy properties in their own name and not in husbands name?

To be fair to Abike as much as na she dey put mouth it's really NEMA and the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan under the purview of the foreign affairs minister that are running the show so should actually be answering these questions.

Funny enough , I know the easiest explanation that will come from Abike’s crew. They may likely claim the evacuation is being done in batches and that the guy is raising false alarm cos he and others are scheduled for batch B.

Today, everybody carry him wife name join body.

Women have proven time and time again to be good managers of money . They manage the home with meagre finance from the husband when he’s probably erecting a building , saving to buy a family car, invest in the future etc.

I don’t think it makes sense talking all those husband’s investment away from her on the flimsy excuse of “keeping critical family assets in the family line “. Let that woman keep the assets and train her kids out of it. It makes no sense transferring those assets to a brother or uncle who will always have his own self interest at heart first before any other person
