Consequence of bad leadership. In the 80s, Nigeria was a choice destination for studies. There were Indians schooling in our secondary schools and universities. My dad's friend was the Head of international students who came from South Africa to study in those days at UI. He said people were turning down the idea of schooling abroad in those days. Thabo Mbeki's younger brother schooled in Unilag. What has really changed huh How are the mighty fallen
I remember those days in UI, we had lots of south African students. Heavy beer drinkers. Heard Nigeria government paid them alot of allowances. We even had Palestinians students. Lots of them. So many students from around the world.

No be lie. This is why I supported the endsars. Its a proof that revolution could break out in this country anytime, which nobody would be able to withstand. Nobody ever knew there could be endsars. Same UI closed down their campus for over 8 months cos of bad leadership

Can't we as a nation send 5 planes per day to evacuate these people once and for all.. or negotiate with Egypt air to take them down instead of these show of shame and celebration of mediocrity?

BreconHills:
That bad leadership you are talking about started in the 80's with Shagari, GMB, IBB and Abacha. The rot may not have been apparent to many but to those born in the late 50's and 60's a lot of the foundation had been eroded. The collapse might well have been in the late 90's but the harm was already done.
The Northerners have always destroyed Nigeria eachtime they are given the opportunity to rule. I wish they could be stopped from every ruling Nigeria.
They brought Nigeria down with their mediocrity.

True. But I have a confession.

One of first set of permsecs class of 60- 79 told me that they carried some responsibility for the debacle in the 60's and 70's. The military leaned heavily on them ( but military people are contrary to what most people think - highly intelligent) But the permsecs over taught them and they could easily have instead steered them to some sandboxes but for their own naivety regarding human nature their briefings exposed loopholes that the likes of IBB would later weaponize.

I hope government is not siphoning funds through this evacuation like this. I hope government is not parking people from Kano State to Nnamdi Azkiwe Airport claiming they are flying people in from Sudan, or do we have more than five thousand Nigerians in Sudan?

stuffs2002:
Max Air has been bringing Nigerians without making noise

Nigerian Air Force have been bringing home Nigerians without making noise

Dangote gave each returnee N100,000 without making noise

Azman brought home Nigerians without making noise.

But IPOB/OBIDIENTS have been insulting Nigerians just because Allen Oyeanma of Air peace wanted to bring Nigerians home. Some IPOB/OBIDIENTS were even suggesting that Air Peace should leave behind northern Muslims so that they may perish in the war in Sudan.

Same Air Peace that IPOB/OBIDIENTS failed to realise that the Airline is being patronised by all Nigerians irrespective of religion or tribe.

Same Air Peace that Buhari (through federal gave tax waivers to. The tax waivers that Buhari gave Air Peace ran into billions of Naira

Same Air Peace that Buhari (through the federal government ) gave bailouts to. The bailouts that federal government gave Air peace is in billions of Naira. Those bailouts given to air peace was what prevented Air peace from sinking when the company had all kinds of financial problems.
You are a fool

Those “Indians” were mostly Nigerian-Indians…

As for South Africans, the Nigerian government granted hundreds of scholarships to SAs to study in Nigeria and elsewhere (and of course, Mbeki lived in Lagos, among other SAs). In fact, the Nigerian government granted thousands of Nigerian PASSPORTS to SAs because that’s the only way they could travel during Apartheid, which is why the current anti-Nigerian xenophobia in SA is sadly ironic.

As for Nigerians going to study in Sudan, it’s for one of two reasons: (1) for Islamic and/or Arabic Studies, or (2) people who couldn’t get into Nigerian universities or for the courses they want. It’s NOT because tertiary education in Sudan is better. IT ISN’T!

Nigeria would likely be a MUCH BETTER country…
Population is NOT a problem, but the (lack of) PRODUCTIVITY of the population. Nigeria presently carries too much DEADWEIGHT!

Anyone from our parents (or grandparents) generation will enlighten you that Nigeria was at it most promising peak (and was labeled as “The First Black Power” on a TIME magazine cover story) when the so-called “first set of permsecs” were influential in the affairs of the state.

It was when Murtala Muhammed came to power and immediately set about dismantling the civil service hierarchy “with immediate effect” (starting with the so-called “super permanent secretaries” cadre epitomized by the likes of highly-educated and capable technocrats such as Philip Asiodu, Ahmed Joda, Allison Ayida, etc.) that the degeneration and overt-politicization of the public service and sector first set in - which was then subsequently entrenched by the “quota system” policies (first introduced in education by Prof Jubril Aminu, and which subsequently spread like cancer throughout the public sector) and “federal character” bean-counting, each of which often derogated merit.

We now have ended up with a contraption of a “nation” wherein (for example) even appointments to the nation’s most important law court, the Supreme Court, is done on the basis of quotas and geopolitical representation. SMH

My father was a super perm sec within the self same group you have mentioned and I understand the point you make clearly and I agree.

I probably have access to more information than the general public. However you are right that the current situation has metasized. My points were not about the very visible problems and dysfunction of Nigerian society. But rather the "invisible" threads to the beginning of the end.

Respects.
