But why don't other Nigerian tribes identify as Bantus? And what do they identify as?

Yeah, there are old historical threads on Nairaland that discussed this extensively back in 2010-2012. It is not actually Congo but actually Cameroun/Nigeria axis. The Bantus may have been the remnants of the Wet Sahara civilization that spread out into West and Central African areas over 5000 years ago. The only reason Congo might be relevant is because the first wave of migrants stayed in Congo before a second group emerged and travelled downwards.

All Bantu peoples originated from West-Central Africa. They travelled southwards in several waves until they reached the Southern tip of Africa.
