I got my own in a different way.
5²-6=19
3²-4=5

Go with Sofnana.

The difference between the square of one of the numbers and the other number satisfies the questions more. If the square of the larger number minus the smaller one does not work, try the square of the smaller number minus the larger number.

Your method gives the correct answers to the examples only by coincidence.

Try applying it to the actual questions and you will see that the answers you get are not among the given options.

The correct solution is to:

Separately,
A. Multiply the two bottom numbers,
B. Add the two bottom numbers.
C. Work out A minus B to get the top number.

This is what HeavenlyHolines did.

(5*x) - (5+x) = 27
5x - 5 - x = 27
4x = 27 + 5 = 32
x = 8
