If the UK wants to poach the best and brightest, they've been going about it wrongly sha, the US seems to have got that best and brightest poaching on lock for the longest, they only need to borrow a leaf from them...maybe the UK isn't as attractive for migration as say the US, and that's why they've been going about it the way they have.

Could also be argued that they had a future care worker quota to fill and now they've filled it think it's time to shut the door on immigration

The funny thing is that Tier 2 route to come here as a care worker is still very much open, as is the study route for a student with no dependants.

Where Nigerians seem to be missing the point, like you just have, is that the UK is not interested in bringing in care workers anchored on a family member's Student Visa, because people have seriously abused that route.

The bolded is where you lost me. From what I gathered, Brits do not like care work and family ties are not as strong in the UK as it is in say Nigeria.

Someone has to do it. So if getting the immigration numbers up is what it takes to ensure the frail and elderly are taken care of, I'm not seeing anything wrong with it.

Besides, these people are not entitled to any benefit and are not putting pressure on government resources, they and their dependants still work and pay tax like every other person. What exactly is the UK losing here? What am I missing?

Care work is manual labor. It does not have a multiplier or exponential positive effect on the economy. Any reasonable country will prioritise the immigration of people with unique skills like economics whiz, IT whiz, neurosurgeon, over the immigration of cleaners, care workers etc.

If they allow more and more people to immigrate into their lower class the burden on social security system would be too much.

Right here was the saving grace for this project, otherwise, the community would have ruined it because it wasn't easy at the start.

Community leaders are capable of ruining the work/ good intention of government and private investors. I raised this issue 2 weeks ago when I talked about Warri. For the community leaders, the real work just started. They must ensure this investment is protected from multiple local taxations and vandalism. Poverty and greed no dey allow us see long term goals, everybody wan chop now and worry about tomorrow later.

Dangote's refinery was even being considered to be situated in Akwa Ibom. Udom got greedy, insisting it had to be moved from a prime location like Eket-Ibeno axis to his remote LGA, Onna (just like he was trying to do with Ibom Deep Seaport and was fought to a standstill).

Dangote refinery wahala was prior Udom. Akpabio was the Governor then.

(The sometimes greedy) Udom was the SSG then. Akpabio made him the final port of call for a lot of state decisions, including financial. Akpabio was careful since he's not from the oil-producing axis and my senatorial district, and of a fringe Ibibio ethnicity.

Even as Governor, Udom almost made us lose the new Federal University of Technology in Akwa Ibom because he wanted it located in his LGA. It took threats of ensuring his candidates would lose at the polls for him to let it be.

Asides outside influences, he's the number one reason the Ibom Deep Seaport is coming at a slower pace than envisaged. He wants the entrance situated in his LGA even though there's a cheaper natural deep harbour at the proposed site.

These are some of the reasons I don't support Udom but I respect his personal and public service achievements.
