How do exceptional students skip grades in America? How many students from AP class makes it to exceptional status?

How many of such exceptional students are churned out in a decade and what standard are used to grade them? Is it school dependent or ISD and state dependent?

What is the process that makes a student exceptional?

When you find answers to those questions, compare to Nigeria where 80% of students are already exceptional. Every school “INDEPENDENTLY” awards or sells it to you without no monitoring board or institutions.

And you here trying to compare both with Nigeria where over 70% take long jump in the name of exceptional
80%? Really?

These kids needs to gain a year or two to provide for the year they will lose to ASUU strikes later in their lives. grin

The parents are wise.
We can be rid of ASUU strikes, NLC strikes etc.
It's a season of Renewed Hope. Be optimistic.

That thing damages the children and belabour his/her teacher. The transition is seamless if the child is psychologically ready rather than anybody trying to encumber a psyche that is essentially yet to grapple anything. You will only labour in vain.

But underage can vote abi?
Re: FG Bans Underage Candidates From Taking Common Entrance Exams by Thattallgirl(f): 9:30am On Jun 05, 2023
It's simple:
1. Make the curriculum in primary, secondary and university levels into the current world standard. You can't test "intelligent" students based on our current curriculum.
2. Provide programs in the university for child prodigies no matter their age. There should be a certain test or tests that average intelligent students will most likely not pass except child prodigies with very high IQ.
3. If universities can't accept underage kids, there should be a unique school(s) for child prodigies only or for intelligent children who can meet the academic requirements. Children in these schools will most likely finish school earlier than others...and they will be surrounded by children their age as well who are equally as intelligent as they are.
4. Averagely intelligent students should go through the normal process OR take examinations in other classes if he or she can.
5. Hopefully no more ASUU strike lol.
6. Employers really should stop the 21 or 24 age requirement.

Banning children below certain age and without the necessary things put in place is just too backward.

You have no idea about what this long jump is all about now. It’s almost a norm!

How many students make it to primary 6? How many make it to SS3. They swap schools and register, and their parents will tell you they are “EXCEPTIONALLY” brilliant.

They must be intelligent if they passed the Common Entrance at that tender age. At least you did NOT hear that the reason to ban underage candidates is because they are failing. I am NOT sure what Western country you're talking about. At least in America, exceptional students skip grades. They take AP classes and test out in college. So, what's your point? I guess Nigeria celebrates mediocrity and it shows!

You think this tankard of your days is what plays now. I understand where you seeing from but it’s a pity, the system has been rigged.

In fact, you can choose the school that will select your kids, unlike before, when it was on merit. Now, parents influence those things

For a start, if I have to lecture you on what makes a student exceptional, then why are you arguing with me? Having said that, an exceptional student is one who exhibits intellectual curiosity, thinks critically and outside the box, has problem-solving skills, and tests well above and beyond his peers. In essence, he's gifted. Now, that we have gotten this out of the way, I still do NOT see the point of your argument. You're missing the point and conflating issues. If your argument is that having a high IQ is NOT a determinant of how successful a person would be in life, then I can agree with you. But that does NOT seem to be your argument. You're here asking about the process and standard of measurement. Well, if a 9-year-old can take and pass the Common Entrance Examination (CEE), what other measurement are you looking for? The issue that brought us here is that the government has decided to ban underage candidates from taking the CEE and my question is why? In case you're NOT aware, there are children that are gifted meaning they can talk, read and perform well above their peers. So, do NOT sit here and try to argue unnecessarily. You still did NOT state whether the underage candidates are flunking the exams. Apparently, that's NOT the case here. After all, I scored a 36 aggregate (highest possible score) when I took the exam in elementary 5 and graduated a year ahead of my classmates who followed the normal route of taking it in elementary 6.

I get your point and I am sure things had changed drastically from the way it was when I was in school. But if a kid is been pushed above his intellectual capacity and ability simply because his parents have the means to buy his way, it will show along the way.

Let me be truthful to you. It won’t show.

Imagine parents who can go that length. They will do to any level.

What is used to quantify high IQ? Same one that independent school decide? Does it mean one with a high IQ in school A will retain same in School B? What basis is used to determine that in Nigeria school system?

Same US schools have age limit starting form KG 1 to college. The exceptional cases you mentioning are rare and you certain such student has competed at ISD and state levels. Do you want to compare that with Nigeria where anyone can just decide that and influence such.

Moreover, what’s the sudden rush about! With the whole acclaimed high IQ we mention, what quality of graduates do we produce.

It’s a rigged system and age limit will at least checkmate such to great extent. What is an 8 year old doing in JSS 1? Where are they rushing him too?

Ask any parent when you see those jumps, all claim their child has a high IQ based on Individual school performance.

How about the mental health of the child, do people even consider that. You work a kid to limits that he misses his peers, special moments and events and even that space to explore other things, which they can’t say. Cos Tunde their Neighbour has gotten double promotion.

The above points you made are all valid but as always in Nigeria, the system applies a one-size-fits-all approach. That's definitely wrong. You deal with issues on a case-by-case instead of using a blanket approach. I do NOT know about Nigeria, but there are tests used to assess the IQ of a child especially if the child performs beyond what's expected of the age group. In the US, the assessment is also used to determine students who perform below expectations and those students are offered help to bring them up to the level of their peers. All I'm saying is that the government MUST NOT discourage kids who are academically gifted from following their natural educational trajectory. They must use other means to deal with what they perceive as the downside effects, some of which you stated in your piece.

Yes, MOST states have an age limit to which a child must be before he or she starts kindergarten. However, once you're in the system (meaning after you have started kindergarten), NO school would ever say that a student can NOT take any class because the student is too young. It does NOT happen. Here students test out of some classes and skip grades as well so that they can graduate much quicker.

What is the process of skipping class?

You mention “No School” when it’s 100% certain you can never influence such as a parent cos the age requirement will knock such student out.

You cannot withdraw a kid in grade 1 at school A and go enroll him/her in grade 3 at school B. The process does not work like that. You cannot skip grade 5 and jump to high school because you feel your child is exceptional. The system does that with due competitive process.

The exceptional cases are very rare and only happens once in a blue moon.

Even university’s have standard age limits, and I am here to see educational institutions who don’t have a minimum age requirement.

WOW! Ignorance is NOT bliss! I guess no matter how I try to explain it, you still could NOT comprehend. And by the way, I never said skipping class! "Skipping a grade" is absolutely NOT the same as "skipping class." When you skip class, it means you do NOT show up for a lecture but when you skip a grade, you do NOT follow the normal progression like first grade, second grade, third grade, etc. Assuming a kid is supposed to be in 2nd grade and if he's well above the grade level intellectually, he can test out and skip a second grade and be in either third or fourth grade, depending on the level he is at. That's how you skip a grade and I hope I do NOT have to answer this question for the umpteenth time. In case you do NOT know, there are high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are taking college courses and can test out of those classes when they get to college. So, it's NOT unusual for kids to graduate earlier in college or graduate high school at the age of 16 or 17. And I'd appreciate it more if you ONLY speak on issues that you're very familiar with rather than making endless arguments.
