A family in Kapsongoro village in Chepsangor, Nandi County, Kenya, is in mourning after their son, Michael Kibet, allegedly took his life after failing to secure a job.

Kibet, a graduate of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), is said to have committed suicide at his brother's compound in Lessos after searching for employment opportunities in vain.

The deceased, 26, graduated with a First Class honours degree in ICT and Telecommunication from the Juja-based institution in 2021 having also scored A plain from Meteitei Boys High School in Tinderet Nandi.

Area Chief David Rugut confirmed the incident on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, saying the deceased hanged himself outside his brother's house out of frustration.

He said the family had lost not only a bright student but a dependable professional in the entire Chepsangor location.

"We are really saddened by the loss of Michael. He was a hardworking and disciplined boy in our location. He ended his life out of frustration according to his brother," Rugut said.

The deceased hoped to secure employment immediately after his studies after graduating top of his class.

"The locals were really shocked by his demise. Many didn't believe as he has been a very humble boy and very responsible," the chief said.

Until his death, Kibet was living with his mother a retired nurse and single mother, who has been educating her children alone after the death of her husband.

"It is really difficult to tell what could be the major contributor to Kibet's death as his parents really laid a good foundation for them educationally, it is really sad losing such a vibrant young man," he added.

The body of the deceased was moved to Samaritan Funeral Home in Kapsabet as funeral preparations continue. He will be laid to rest on Friday, June 9, 2023.

Suicide cases have been on the rise in the country with experts blaming stress and depression for the trend.

"We didn't know he was going through issues. Whenever he was facing a problem, he would tell us," a relative, who sought anonymity, said.

What a coward you are. You didn't choose how you came, you had no right to choose how to go.

No confident? The future was bright for you, imagine first class in ICT and Telecommunication in this time. Just some training skills and little start up, he would boom. You wasted a golden lifetime. RIP though

It’s unfortunate that many Nigerian youths still hope and believe that education will feed them

In this present reality, you either learn a hand work to or go into farming, if you rely solely on education to put food on your table, you are digging your own grave by your self

While I won’t recommend yahoo, there are digital skills you can learn as well

One of my biggest regret was that I didn’t wait to finish the tailoring I started learning in 2006, second biggest was that I was in a hurry to go to university when I could have used 1 year to complete that tailoring, but at the back of my mind I am still going back to it, I must prefect it after school

Some of you who are commenting up there... don't you fear God at all? You are speaking evil of a dead man. His mother was a retired nurse who was a widow. I'm guessing it was financial pressure (living from hand to mouth, no good clothes, no concrete achievement in life, no fiance, no car, no good phone and seeing your mates waste hundreds of thousands of naira at night clubs) that made him commit suicide. If committing suicide was not the best option he had, he won't have done it. And the man who spoke anonymously that the deceased used to always confide in his friends and well wishers, how sure are we he is speaking the truth? See... if you tell somebody you want to kill yourself, the conversation doesn't always end well and you will regret telling them in the first place. At the end whatever it is you are going through they will not be able to help you

In Davido's Voice

"Something fishy is going down"

Why will a bright and promising young man choose to cut his life short,

Even his mother, who is a widow, did not give up in training them or commit suicide

So why should the young man choose that path, who taught him thatπŸ€”πŸ€”

Doesn't work that way, especially in Africa..

He is a book worm, so he lacks social skills..

Africa is not a great place for book worms and hard working people..

To succeed in Africa is not by what you know, or qualification..

It's by who you know..

Many smart and intelligent + introvert guys are in his shoes in Africa.

Even the IT industry doesn't work as you think.

Someone that politicians are paying per post on nairaland, where will depression come from?

I'm a 'bookworm' like him, though I didn't graduate with first class. All my life, I had thought I could never be poor. I was wrong. I grew up with my grandfather in the farm and gained a lot of farming experience. But during my time in the university, I fell ill. After my recovery from that sickness, if I hold cutlass for long without even using it, palpitations and other symptoms would set in. I laugh anytime people advise me online to go into farming since I can't secure any white-collar job.

I once secured a white-collar job, but I willingly resigned. I can't hold any meeting with the company executives because of my partial hearing loss. I'm just existing without any hope.

Depression is real...be mindful of anyone around you going through a hard time
Re: First Class Graduate Commits Suicide Over Failure To Secure Employment by grandstar(m): 6:47pm On Jun 08, 2023
Suicide isn't the way especially over lack of a job at 26! Haba!

Things can always change.

Suicides are selfish as they leave their loved ones in a lot of pain.

It is also contagious as other members of the family might decide to do likewise when faced with challenges.

Bro I understand, every human has faced depression one way, directly or indirectly. But taking your life because of depression, ha is that ain't a bitchass thing to do.
Nothing will "STOP" if someone commits, it means the person is a weak coward for taking his own life.
