BVN means bank verification number. It is a 11 digit unique number and a must have by banking customers in Nigeria. It was introduced into the Nigerian banking system in February 14, 2014 by the Central Bank of Nigeria in collaboration with Bankers committee of Nigeria. The following was listed as the advantage of BVN. 1. Customers bank accounts are protected from unauthorized access It will address issues of identity theft, thus reduce exposure to fraud. 2. The BVN will enhance the Banking Industry chances of being able to fish out blacklisted customers. 3. The Customers unique BVN is accepted as a means of identification across all Nigerian banks. 4. It will help to end corruption. But as of today none of the listed advantage is true or even working. First the CBN said it will protect customers bank accounts from unauthorized access and fight identity theft, but today reverse is the case, no account with BVN is protected, I can use any BVN to withdraw money, I can carry out identity theft by using the BVN to borrow money, and I can also use get millions of valid BVN numbers from my home with ease and I can also verify any BVN for free. Next CBN said BVN will help to fish out blacklisted customers, is this true? no from the comfort of my home I can open an run a bank account in Nigeria without BVN and no funding limits. Next is CBN said BVN will serve as the official means of identity accross all banks, but is this true? the answer is no, so many banks request for utility bills eg. Nepa bill even if you have BVN. Next CBN said BVN will help to fight corruption, but is this true? no corruption has even increased since the introduction of BVN. Conclusively it is now clear that BVN has made many Nigerians poor because it opened up very big loophole that allow unfettered access to any bank account link with it in Nigeria. I have received various complains of money disappearing from bank accounts without trace due to BVN, and if any body is in doubt drop your BVN number bellow and I will show you wonders. **Ayanbe Francis Uzezi is a cyber security consultant and trainer. |
