It's very simple. Me and you can talk trash to each other in person all day but the minute you use physical violence, you have become the aggressor, regardless of who initiated the dirty talk between both of us.

For all the diplomatic games between Russia and the USA, US has never actually used a single bullet on Russia prior to the invasion.
If Ukraine has decided to align with the West. It is their own decision to make and no, don't bring In the "whataboutism" with "what if it was the US"? Well, we can't tell but if that opportunity presents itself today, then we make our own judgement.

But Ukrainians as a people have the sole right to determine the direction of their own country and not let a next door bully invade and kill them.
