This idea doesn't make any sense.
If we must advert any future coup we must adopt the USA system, the leadership must be demilitarised.

The position of NSA isn't a war position it's a tactical and a very intelligent position, being a military person doesn't even make you more suitable to advice the president on issues of national security threat than a civilian who is a security expert.

Tinubu must redesign our military to be similar to the USA.

Pull military out of Abuja and raise DSS to become the highest security agency in the country.

For me the NSA should even be coming from DSS or NIA.

being a military general doesn't make you an expert in security matters, you need to see some of them speak

We have had military general as NSA back to back for over 10 years how has our security fared?

The military are trained for maximum force.

If I were the president I will reorganized the security council.

Each military unit will have a secretary which the military top chief reports to.

Have a NSA from a top intelligence unit.

Revamp DSS to focus on protection of the president and vvip personalities alone.

Reorganize police and turn the current police structure into state police.

Collapse the civil defense into state police.

Then established a federal intelligence agency which will be responsible for intelligence gathering and investigation of high profile cases, cyber crimes etc.

Unit custom and immigration into federal board guard.

Remove military completely from Abuja and the only people who should have access to the president should be civilians.

Revamp our laws to bar the military from having any dealings with any civilian and only to be used for maximum aggressive and force enemies.

Tinubu does not have the political capital to perform those reforms you highlighted.

The military are not petroleum marketers or NLC you can intimidate with bluster.

In the kyn US you're talking up, the Pentagon failed its fifth consecutive audit in November 2022. Trillions of dollars unaccounted for.

They've not given birth to the POTUS, Senator, FBI/CIA Director, civil servant or activist that will so much as make a murmur about it.

If the military says they can't work with an NSA who's a former police officer, that is final.

Under different circumstances, say if we have a deliberately weakened military as is customary in the Middle East or the security situation isn't terse, then you could retire a bunch of senior officers and let ambition and greed create infighting amongst the top echelon. Then sneak in your appointee.

But as things stand, whatever the military wants it gets. Reform will only be tolerated from someone with significantly more cachet than the "I won with 8m votes" crooner.

Everyone create moats in Nigeria for self-preservation. Only doctors can be Ministers of Health and chief administrative officers of hospitals. Petroleum Minister must be from the SS. And many other norms that must be upheld.

Ribadu, the security adviser to Tinubu will still be performing the same task & function as NSA(National Security Adviser). He will be operating from ONSA(Office of the National Security Adviser), and be over-seeing the structure of the entire security agencies as a whole, thereby advising the president accordingly on steps, approach, improvement and changes to make.

The only difference is that, the intelligence agencies ( NIA, DSS, DIA ) will be reporting directly to Tinubu now, instead of the NSA. Which means wont be having NSA.

President Tinubu, probably employ that modality and structural shift to avoid lack of respect or trust between the Military and Ribadu, a fmr. police officer. We all know there has been long standing power-tussles over functions & seniority between the Military and the police.

If you look at most of the SAs appointed well. You will realise they are strategist, capable and trusted fellows who can deliver. This will leave the ministerial positions to politicians. Politicians are corrupt and cant effect changes, they are only after their pocket and political status. But they must be compensated, that is politics. Tinubu knows this, so his best bet are on his Special advisers. Reason he is putting forward his best cards there.

If the highlighted is the case, then it means that Nigerian military has yet to be professionalized to subordinate itself to civil authority…
That’s an IRREDUCIBLE PREREQUISITE for real democracy (for which Obasanjo retired 93 ‘political’ officers and spent millions on MPRI).

I concur with your stand.

It is very bad. Reason we lack proper synergy between the security agencies. But in this case, you can never blame them. It is a widely acceptable standard everywhere for a military general to be appointed NSA.

Nonsense…

In the US that you’re referring to (and where we borrowed the concept from), NSAs such as Susan Rice, Condoleeza Rice, even as far back as George McBundy, etc., were neither military officers or retired military officers. The role of the NSA is more that a STRATEGIC security adviser than of an OPERATIONS military (or security) adviser. Nonetheless, if the military cannot work with ANYONE appointed by the President, it merely betrays FUNDAMENTAL weakness of our institutions (and a lack of professionalism among the top military ranks).

If we are to buy your thesis, then Nigeria is essentially operating a civilian-military DIARCHY masquerading as ‘democracy’!

must a country have ministers ?

Yes. It is in the constitution. It has legal backing. Not only that Nigeria must have. But they must also come from each of the 36 states, and federal capital. That is reason why you see: some appointed Minister of Education and another Minister of education for state. It is just a means of respecting the constitution and covering all states.

But nowadays, the ministerial posts have been reduced to mere formalities. Just a ceremonial post for rewarding political allies. Very sad.

Tinubu should retire the generals and stop the army rank at cornel, we have all this generals still no security in the country. Any body that opposed people that appoint to work with Tinubu no mean good to Nigeria. The generals need to practice their skill at sambiasa not in government appointment.

The NSA during Abacha was a retired policeman and he performed better than the recent ones.

We've had two retired policemen as NSA; also a retired Colonel. Ribadu is going to perform that function as Special Adviser, Security to the president. That's Tinubu's style.

In the USA people without any background in security are appointed to the esteem office of the NSA.
Why is ours so different?

Abacha was a Military General with several caucus and secret operatives.. a Military person as the Head could comfortably appoint whoever he likes without other Army Officers revolting.

Present day is a different case.. we are running a democracy now with Civilian as Head of government, it's fair to allow a competent Military person oversee security so the whole security architecture of the country won't be in jeopardy.

So many childish posts.

NSA cannot be replaced.
Ribadu should be given another position.
Even generals as presidents had NSA, that in charge of advicing and coordinate the security.

Tinubu is civilian, he has little knowledge on security hence he needs NSA.
