Uniting Igbos And Yorubas: Breaking The Cycle Of Discord On Nairaland And Beyond by Debater(m): 2:28am On Jun 19, 2023
Dear Nairalanders,

In the vibrant online community of Nairaland and across Nigeria, the Igbos and Yorubas often find themselves locked in heated debates and disagreements. This article delves into the reasons behind this discord, offers insights into bridging the gap, and explores the potential for unity in a language that resonates with the layman.

The Power of Diversity
Nigeria, our great nation, is a tapestry of diverse cultures and ethnicities. The Igbos and Yorubas represent two vibrant threads in this beautiful fabric, each with their unique customs and traditions. Yet, it is this diversity that should enrich us, not divide us.

Historical Tensions
Our history carries scars that sometimes fuel misunderstandings between the Igbos and Yorubas. But let us not be trapped in the past. Instead, let us embrace the present and shape a future where unity prevails.

The Nairaland Arena
Nairaland, our virtual meeting place, can be a battleground of ideas and opinions. It is here that conflicts arise, where some voices sow discord. Take APCHaram, for instance. His offensive comments against the Igbo tribe stoke the flames of division. But we must remember: APCHaram is an individual, not the embodiment of an entire ethnic group.

Breaking Stereotypes
Stereotypes often hold us back from embracing our shared humanity. Let us challenge these stereotypes head-on, for they limit our understanding of one another. Don't let the actions of a few overshadow the diversity and beauty within the Igbos and Yorubas.

Embracing Our Shared Struggles
Real-life stories can bridge the gap between us. Remember the Igbo and Yoruba entrepreneurs collaborating on business ventures, defying the odds? They remind us that our destinies are intertwined, that we thrive when we work together.

The Power of Dialogue
Dialogue is the key that unlocks understanding. Engage in conversations that foster empathy and respect. Seek to understand, rather than to win. Let your words be bridges, connecting hearts and minds.

Embracing Our Unity
Our strength lies in unity, not in division. As Nigerians, we must reject the notion that the Igbos and Yorubas are always at odds. Look beyond the online clashes and recognize the countless moments of unity that define our shared existence.

Reporting for Change
Let us stand against hate speech, regardless of the ethnic group involved. When we report offensive behavior, we contribute to the creation of a healthier online space for all. It is a collective responsibility.

My Conclusion
In the realm of Nairaland and across Nigeria, the Igbos and Yorubas need not be eternally at loggerheads. By embracing our diversity, challenging stereotypes, engaging in dialogue, and celebrating our shared struggles, we can forge a path towards unity. Let us be the generation that breaks the cycle of discord, that creates a Nigeria where our diversity is our strength, and where the Igbos and Yorubas walk hand in hand towards a brighter future.
As I don report APCHaram, e come lead to hin ban, e show say our reporting na im make sense. E show say we fit make change for Nairaland. Na our collective responsibility to dey report any person wey dey spread hate speech or violate ethnic and tribal rules, whether na Igbo, Yoruba, or any other tribe. We go fit create safe and better environment for everybody for inside Nairaland.

So make una join me hand-in-hand, make we dey report any behavior wey no dey right. Make we show say we no go tolerate hate speech or divisive actions. As we work together, we go fit build one Nairaland wey dey celebrate unity, respect, and inclusivity.

Igbos just need to change their attitude, we don’t have any issues with them. They should be friends and brothers and not constantly plotting evil against us we are not stupid we just are tolerant and accommodating

We will make sure all the past laxity on our part in our dealings with you are straighten up. We have decided not to be taken advantage of anymore you don’t have to get uncomfortable we are just setting boundaries.

You guys are very abusive and unrepentant in nature. Start respecting boundaries and learn to treat others the way you are being treated. Majority of you claim to be Christians let it show in your attitudes and character. If you constantly plan to conquer us we will resist and you will loose big

You and your people are the ones that needs to change their attitude most especially your propaganda way of getting what you want. Igbo don't have any problem with people around them, rather they focus more on things that brings comfort to them and are ready to make friends with other tribes, the youth copers posted to south east will testify to this, they are not the type that treat their visitors bad, rather their hospitality is a unique one, unlike some people or tribe that endangered their visitors. Imagine people that killed 21 youths copers just because of an election of 4years position. Whenever I remember the 2011 election that led to the killing of 21 copers from the south in the north, I feel bad for this country.

OP you tried. But the problem with these two tribes is that they allowed the politicians to succeed in causing divisions among them.

Secondly, this cannot change.

The Yorubas are not generally like that.
Many of them are, sadly, and that's just the problem
But please, don't mention "his people"

My secretary is Yoruba, my office cleaner, Yoruba
Though my workplace is usually dominated by Igbos, yet we don't have any issues with our boss.
That man treats us like his children.
And, sef, I don't have any issues with my secretary

Without a word no one can tell me you are not Igbo. You bias stink worse than the pig you are. What make you single out apcharam for anything ? I for a fact knew when that Monicker was created n long before that I have seen the likes of pachukwudie77 who was the reason why I had to join NL.

Why did you no single them out, the like of princeoflagos firefire n many other foolish Igbo minicker too numerous to list.

When some of you igbos create thread like this do you not understand that you insult our intelligence. You condemned Apcharam with you listing him as if only he thrown ethnic slur while ignore more vile filled Igbos that post daily in NL. This same sole reason is why Nnamdi Azikwe a collosal failure with no single accomplishment in life is not antagonized by igbos like you do to Awolowo.

Igbos will rather insult n malign Awolowo for his magnificent accomplishment while they shut their stinking mouth on the failure Azikwe thereby de-marketing the beta candidate. This is what plays out even till today imagine igbos having failures like Ikpeazu Abaribe Ugwuanyi Pandora.. Obi Elechi n coming to insult a pioneer an achiever like Bola Tinubu ?!

As a none bias Nigerian you self reason am. Who is Tinubu not beta than among all the failures ruling Igbo state since 1999 but see how they demonize him compare to you hearing anything about the failures they parade as governor just cis he's beta than their best.

My bro, I've said this on and on, that's a child's mentality.

Let me take a moment to share with you how the American people managed to come together even after experiencing a deep division during the Civil War. It's a testament to the resilience and spirit of unity that will eventually define our nation.

The American Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865, made the Northern states to be against the Southern states over various issues, primarily centered around slavery. It was a conflict that tore families apart and divided the country along ideological and regional lines. However, once the war concluded, the process of healing and reconciliation began.

One crucial factor that helped bring Americans back together was the commitment to rebuilding and reunifying the nation. Leaders such as President Abraham Lincoln played a vital role in fostering a sense of unity and emphasizing the shared values and goals that united Americans. Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address, delivered in 1863, called for a "new birth of freedom" and emphasized the importance of a united nation.

Additionally, efforts were made to address the underlying causes of the division. The Reconstruction era that followed the war aimed to rebuild the Southern states and address the injustices of slavery. This period, while challenging and marked by social and political conflicts, helped pave the way for progress and eventual reconciliation.

Over time, Americans began to rebuild trust and foster a sense of national identity. Economic development, the expansion of railroads, and the westward movement played a significant role in bringing different regions together and promoting a shared vision of progress and prosperity.

While challenges and divisions have continued to emerge throughout our history, Nigeria will consistently demonstrate its ability to overcome them. The values that bind us as a nation, along with a commitment to dialogue, compromise, and understanding, have allowed Nigerians to rise above their differences and work towards a more perfect union.

So, my friend, even though we faced a painful division during our own Nigerian Civil War, the Nigerian people ultimately will be united once again. It serves as a reminder of our capacity to heal, reconcile, and move forward, guided by the principles that define us.

Wallahi!

These Ibos know Yoruba very well. We are very easy, gullible to peace making. Just offer some nice words to make Yoruba head swell and he will forgive you for sneaking in his house and killing his father last week. After few weeks his guards are down. Sneak back in the house, kill his mother this time. Wait few weeks, apologize, he will embrace peace again. When his guards are down sneak back in and kill his son.

You can do this over and over untill his entire family is wiped out, he loves peaceful coexistence more than he loves himself or his family.

It is this knowledge of Yoruba instincts that led to such stewpid and nonsensical article posted by this op.

This comment right is why your igbos should quit creating thread for unity in Nigeria because you are barking at the wrong tree.

Yorubas are not Ikwerre n Ibibio that you can be barking at, each bark you instigate will be smacked down with hard n harsh knock to your father's mouth to shut your soul up.

As you do not see anything with comment from the likes of princeoflagos firefire n others Yoruba see nothing wrong in messages from APCHaram so your thread is a waste of your foolish time but you can keep wasting it. You can see from my comment nobody want anything to do with you n this is reason why your fathers n mothers were flogged in Lagos with nobody of repute coming to your aid unlike before.

This will be how your fathers n mothers will be flogged on their head continuously till you get sense or relocate back to Biafra so quit opening thread such as this it's of no use.

Nigeria is united and has a mainstream culture. Ibo felt left out because you lack ideals that are in harmony with the mainstream.

Nigeria will not unite on Ibos terms. Never ever! Ibo is a minority in Nigeria now, and must assimilate itself to the mainstream culture and ideology. Harmonise to mainstream or get the hell on with Biafra, we are already a peaceful Nigeria, you cant dictate the narrative here.

A sane nairaland is all we want... Nothing to gain seeing the two largest ethnic in southern Nigeria always at each other neck...

Even as a person not of the two tribes, it's sometimes funny to me...

But a quick check will show you that Apcharam is the least of the problem, there are many worse than him..
For example, I come online yesterday to see a moniker(Yorubapiglet)created yesterday trolling the Yoruba people.. There are many moniker like that on here trolling the Yoruba, you can do well to report them...

You achieve nothing mentioning only Apcharam when there are zillions of moniker attacking the Yoruba people here...
