Ignorance is a thing. Wagner are currently not fighting on any of the fronts and Russia is doing very well. The wagnerites were pulled back from the front after the victory of bakhmut. There's no humiliation for Putin. The worst that would have happened is a civil war and it would have been equally surpressed. Only that it would have affected the front and cost them some losses.

The peace talks in Instabul, required that Russia pulls her troop out of Ukraine and Ukraine signs a peace treaty that would see her completely neutral like Austria but can choose to be friends with whoever she pleases (Russia or the west). After Russia agreed to move her troops out of Kiev, the British put pressure on Ukraine not to sign the agreement and promised them more weapons and support from the west. The end result of that is now a loss of 4 regions and death of over 300k soldiers with hundreds of thousands wounded. If Ukraine didn't renege on the agreement, the war would have been over since early 2022.
