If you are knowledgeable in such matters then help the concerned folks to understand how this is normal because using the terms "Warship and diplomacy" in one sentence is somehow. If the reason for the warship is to explore areas for military cooperation or for knowledge transfer, then that's fine. There should be a more specific reason for a Chinese warship showing up on our seaport than just saying for "diplomatic visit".

There's nothing wrong with navy drills. Eve USA, Russia, Iran did navy drills in Indonesia recently. Even at war and being arch rivals.
