Relocation plans actually. Breaks my heart I wouldn't have the luxury of time to be visiting the farm that much for now.

The issue is location. Transporting the goat from Lagos to Osogbo in a bus will be...hmmm.

I will gladly buy this and add to my backyard farm. Can you please send to Akure? I will pay for the transport also.
My only fear is, how will the goat safely reach Akure without any harm.

Well, she just loves eating out the seeds/leaves of guinea grass.

Very friendly but Shy. Hoping to cross her once she goes on heat. She of age now grin wink
Honestly, I love this thread this will be my second time reading from page 1 to the current page at least it made me to know the number of goats one can get from two female does within 3years (2018-2021). I would call this a goat project,lol...

Pls,when crossbreeding a WAD goats with a sokoto red goats, which of them should be the male?

For me, the buck is always the SR, while the does are any other breeds. Majorly due to height difference.

WAD he-goat cannot climb sokoto red She-goat becouse the height different is too much. Sokoto red he-goat will easily do job with wad she-goat

What did they say is the problem with the practice?

jidestroud:
Yes ooo... Patra, Michelle, ain't going nowhere. grin.
Truth be told, even their offsprings maintains same; starting off with 2, then 3 onwards from second birth.
On breeding, I initially just let them have their way. Once the does are at least 9 to 11 months of age, I allow them breed no stop. cry. Well, I have been warned and advised against such practices. Currently, I'm working with 3 births in 2years.

A quick glance at the new goat project!!!
Were you able to get those that birth 3 again? Those near consistent triplet births really inspired me. I'd been uncomfortable about goat business because of low birth rate. But reading about your goats multiple births has changed my view. But I'll have to look for goats with triplet gene/history.

If someone gets a buck that one of triplet and a doe that has gene for twins, is there a chance that the doe of its offspring will be having triplets. In summary, does the bucks gene influence birth rate of its kids?

I want to believe the brown goats there are Sokoto Red, right? If yes, have you been able to breed them successfully in the South.
Are there any challenges you faced with the Sokoto Red kids survival considering the highly humid nature of Southern Nigeria.

Oh yeah! True, like in picture below.

How expensive they could be depend on location though

When I said they hav a slow growth, I meant compare to sokoto red cross. I had 8 months old he goat (WADs) but he and my 4 months old he goat (sokoto red cross) are not mate in terms of size. D sokoto RC is way bigger
Please at what age is the Sokoto Red (SR) goat considered to be table size/ready for market.
I'll also like to know for WAD and SR x WAD cross breed.

Good thing you said it's a fence land, just try as much as possible to keep the enclosure neat, grasses cut etc. I don't know of any plants that keeps snakes away because I did try planting the tobacco plant, and believe me you, I did see snakes on the plant a few times. grin.

Nevertheless, throughout my goat rearing period, I never had any incident of snakes attacking or killing any of my goats.

Corn silage....hmmmm

2 acres of land .....hmmmm that i can use to rake in the sales of 100 goats in a year with crops. How many goats will 2 acres feed? Just trying to understand livestock operational management in Nigeria.

Legume fodder in addition, plus many other goodies.

Is it really worth the investment and stress? 2 acres of land? For start small, grow big goat business? 2 acres?
Medications not yet included.

I need to really see the start up cost and operational costs of this kind of proposal.

I am not against livestocks, but it seems it is not worth the kind of energy we put in it.

That 2 acres is what I am still trying to see. I think hydroponic fodder is the way forward, and not 2 acres fodder. And I have to install sprinkler during dry season for goats? grin

Maybe you need to really explain this well. Looks like I am missing many things here.

Even pigs, poultry, fish businesses are all same to me. It is always the extreme high cost of feeding. How can the cost of feeding ONLY be over 70% of total cost of production? And then you start picking up crops and fodder farming to make them work well. Just my concern. One can easily grow corn to make profit. One can easily grow soy to make profit. But one starts growing maize and soy to make livestock businesses profitable is what I still do not understand. Most of these livestock farmers eventually abandon livestock when they see the profit in the corn and soy if sold for human consumption.

Or am I missing anything here?

Maybe we all need to turn to vegetarian. If you get veggie right, I swear, you will never near livestock. You just need them for manure production. Honestly.

This get me really thinking deep again.
Una go just Dey speak big big grammar, same goats our grandparents dey rear for village n they allow them graze lands is what u speak big grammar on top like this

I monitored my father's subsistence livestock farm when I was young n it's cool n it's not capital demanding but I will come online n keep seeing big grammar n hearing many things, probably cos many wants to sell book or want to sound educated

The females won't give problem it's the Buck which will cause major problem. If I saw this post earlier I would have advised you not to buy a Buck. When you want to breed, you take your goat for breeding then return it to your farm. Male goats are stubborn and they smell offensive, if you've already bought him separate him from the doe
please y should he seperate d male from d female after breeding?

I just want to learn

jidestroud:
The Beginning

This indeed is going to be another chapter as I indeed exploring the animal farming sector.

Recently, I have been reading up different articles on goat rearing and it's profitability. Having gotten all materials needed, I guess I am set to exploring another chapter in my farming experience, and this time, it going to be with Goats.

I went to a local village along Badagry Express way, Ikoga to be precise. Took a while before getting the African Dwarf goat that melted my heart. I got two females. Also, i visited a farm within the same axis and paid for a pregnant Hausa goat - Rago (Wish I knew the real name) which I would be picking up later in the week.

Two African Dwarf Goats (Females): 10 per each. = N20,000
One Pregnant Hausa goat: N15,000

Total: N35,000

The two African dwarf goats are both from the same parent and 8months each.

Naming my goats

Still thinking of the perfect names for my pioneer goats.
