It's surprising to hear that the government is considering raising the minimum wage to 200k when it's already struggling to sustain a 30k salary...

Which federal said it? Because I can see some of those frustrated humanity haters called obi slaves already insulting Tinubu in their usual way but failed to remember even Tinubu is in Kenya. So is it from Kenya Tinubu tells you all he is paying 200k?

Is it the ministers not yet appointed that said so?

Minimum wage is paid mostly by private industry in the rest of the world. Like 90% plus of workers getting minimum wage work for private industry

Why do Nigerians equate minimum wage rise to government? Are small private enterprises ready to pay 30,000 never mind 200,000?

It is all very well, but...where would they find the money.

It is not like we are earning enough, or that most states have the cash to pay for it. Yes, even if we 'cut government spending and fight corruption'. Our earnings from oil are not good enough, the price of oil won't hit 100 dollars (and now that subsidy has gone, oil at 100 and above per barrel means high prices for fuel reaching N800-1000 per liter...scary man), and we ain't earning much from taxes. (Buhari managed to raise tax to gdp from 5.8% to 10%, but still...lower than most African countries, Ghana is at 24%, and Ghana is on life support at IMF General Mediclinic).

I see another loan coming up to pay for the thing. Which on top of our loan servicing...is not good. And high salaries can lead to inflation, also not good.

Perhaps you missed the section of the article that cited the naira float.

Perhaps this is why the CBN has refused to intervene markedly in the FX market. The official I&E rate closed at 803/$ on Friday.

Tinubu will raise the minimum wage by a significant margin to net an easy policy win. Then the $ rate will figuratively moon to pay for it.

50K. 100K. 150K. 200K. It matters not. Needless to say, the resultant hyperinflation will be biblical.

At the current rate, we can afford 55K (+/- 10K) minimum wage. The proposed 100K will require rates of at least 1200/$. It's not that far off. Wema Bank charges circa 950/$ for transactions.

200K is bonkers.

The question isn't about minimum wage but of price of things. Prices determine buying power of the money.

If the govt exercises the power to print money and decide to introduce it into the system by paying workers N200k, the businessmen who produce and import what that money ends up buying will adjust because nothing stops them for setting high prices. At the end, the worker will discover his 200k can't buy what 30k could before the minimum wage increase.

The only solution to our problem is production of goods and not of money. Money is gradually failing but many can't see it.
Many people don't understand this that's I keep saying their focus on minimum wage increase is misplaced priority.

How to move our Darling country forward...

1. Abolish SECURITY VOTE in NIGERIA. Nigeria will pay N45,000 minimum wage comfortably.

2. a) Abolish CONSTITUENCY PROJECT FUNDS
b) Reduce number of ADVISERS to SENATE PRES(2), HOUSE SPEAKER(2), GOVs(4), PRESIDENT(5), VP(2)
c) Reduce current ALL Political Office Holders PAY CHEQUES by 51.5%, without exception
d) Do away with special remuneration to POLITICAL ADVISERS & PUBLIC SERVANTS e.g; Purchase of Private Vehicles, Houses, granting Govt paid Vacations, paying for 1st & Business Class Transportations, etc, etc...
e) Abolish payment of OVERSEAS MEDICAL BILLS for Political Office Holders.
f) Eliminate PRIVATE PRACTICE in public workforce
g) Eliminate participation of Public Workforce in Partisan Politics.
h) Institute EMPLOYMENT BY MERIT, and eliminate UNDEREMPLOYMENT.
i) Review and eliminate allocation of Govt paid POLITICAL AIDES & SUPPORT STAFF to Political Office Holders.

With (1) + (2) Nigeria would pay a minimum wageof N65,000 comfortably.......
(3, 4 and 5 To be completed on another thread)

God bless Nigeria
We will get there.......

Much as I do not engage people on this forum, I have always read your comments on political matters and have no doubt that you're an APC person, which is not an offence. We all can not support the same parties or have the same ideologies. However, this your comment is the most non-partisan and practicable panacea I have read from you. Will they do anything close to these suggestions? I doubt.
God bless Nigeria

How many federal government workers do we have ? How many state government workers do we have ? The government workforce are notoriously lazy and useless especially at the state level . Why reward them with an increase when their productivity is almost zero .

How about the private sector ? Can they be forced to pay the minimum wages when most of them are barely surviving in this economy . I am sure one of Tinubu’s plans is to increase corporate taxes to fund the increase thereby putting more burden on them .

How feasible is this?

Some states are still unable to pay 30k.

The word unable is not true. Remove humongous corruption and stealings of public funds and you will discover that most states can pay the 200k minimum wage.

It will be a stupid decision to make because inflation will swallow it within few months. People that would earn it are not even up to half of Nigerians

Why not find a way to make Nigerians productive by creating enabling environments.

We can't continue to weaken the naira and expect us to be free from inflation. we import almost everything we consume.

There is not pride buying a loaf of bread for 2k when you earn 200k. It is better to buy same for 250 when you earn 30k.

Nigerian government really needs a big brain to survive not the moneybags.
