The US Department of Defense has announced that it will deploy a destroyer alongside F-35 and F-16 fighter jets in the Middle East to deter Iran from seizing ships in the Gulf. The move comes after the Iranian Navy tried to seize two commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman earlier this month, and in one of the two incidents opened fire on a commercial vessel. "In light of this ongoing threat and in coordination with our partners and allies, the department is strengthening our presence and ability to monitor the strait and surrounding waters," Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said. Singh called on Tehran to immediately stop the destabilizing actions that threaten the free flow of trade through this strategic waterway.
