I don't always comment on nairaland but I think some people need to be enlightened.
Certificate of citizenship or naturalization to a country doesn't ever expire, and it is the ultimate proof of citizenship, whether through immigration, by birth etc. Passport is just a document to travel around and show to people that you are a citizen of a certain country. Yes, passports expire and has to be renewed but Certificate of citizenship doesn't. If my US passport expires, it doesn't take away my citizenship. Revocation of Certificate of citizenship is the only reason you can lose citizenship. So please get the facts right. If you are a Nigerian and you have an expired passport, you can prove your citizenship through other means, including your NIN, driver's license and other nationally recognized documents. I hope this throws light into the discussion. Woke Olanipekun is either naive or playing on the intelligence of Nigerians because he knows alot of people don't have the right information.

Show us tinubu certificate of citizenship in guinea that is the koko.. Now u want to use angle because u have understood the argue.. The certificate has no expiration.. So presenting it anytime is proof.. Passport is a no no.. They presented an expired guinea passport and i am letting u know it holds no water..

This is a strong parade of undiluted ignorance. My passport expired and I traveled to Nigeria with it. I only applied for electronic travel certificate which only a citizen can apply for. Stating that your citizenship expires with an expired passport is crass ignorance and multi dimensional stupidity. I'm really disappointed that a so called SAN doesn't know simple basic things. The first thing is, the absence of a passport is not a proof of non citizenship. So even if Tinubu doesn't have a passport, it is not a hard proof that he's not a citizen of the said country. But you're right, he does not need to prove that he's not a citizen of the country. It's up to the accuser to prove that he is. And that brings us to the second thing you need to understand. The second thing is that the presence of a passport (even if it's expired) is a proof that a certificate of citizenship was issued at some point. Therefore, if the holder says they don't have a citizenship certificate, then they're implicating themselves in a bigger crime and they'll have to explain to the court how they were able to obtain a passport without certificate of citizenship. And if they accept that they have a certificate of citizenship, then the burden will then be on them to prove that they're no longer a citizen. In that case, they'll have to present a document that will invalidates the certificate. When you become a citizen of a country, you swear allegiance and are given a document/papers certifying your citizenship. In order to no longer be a citizen, you need to formally renounce citizenship upon which your citizenship would be revoked and documentation evidencing that is provided.

A passport is a travel document, which while indicating citizenship is used strictly for travel purposes. So a passport validity has nothing to do with citizenship. Your passport can expire, your citizenship remains. You can only get a passport based on your citizenship documents, but expiration of passport does not indicate expiration of citizenship.

What expired is the passport and not the citizenship. You remains the citizen but cannot operate with the expired passport until you renew it.

The bank cannot deny that you're their customer because your passport is expired.
