Why FG Should Not Increase Minimum Wage For Workers by Birdbyrde440: 9:06am On Jul 20, 2023
Increasing minimum wage at this time will spell doom for the economy, to increase the minimum wage, the FG has to do a 300% increase in salary of workers i.e a cleaner in the civil service will now be getting around N100,000 as salary!

Money effectively lose value, too much money in circulation and since subsidies on petrol has been removed, the price of petrol will continue to go upward so that means continuous increase in minimum wage. In a few years time the minimum wage will rise to maybe N500,000. A loaf of bread might go for N10,000.

Fossil fuels contributes greatly to global warming and the global economy is shifting to clean, renewable energy sources so if you must use fuel to power your cars, gens, etc... then be prepared to pay a hefty price for it.

Sure, no increases.

Let the country suffer, maybe a 16 years straight suffering will cure Nigeria of tribalism.

Minimum wage increase is as a result of fuel subsidy removal not because of increase in the price of fuel.

Think about what he said bro. The more salary is increased, the more sellers of essential products will want to increase the price of goods.

Just imagine a civil servant earning N500k, do you think people will like to sell a product to him for a cheaper amount like 1k when they know he earns a very high amount of money?

Now, do you consider those who are not doing government jobs ?
How will they afford basic items when those who work for government have inspired increase in price of products.

It's just like the way Yahoo boys caused the increments in basic items like clothes, shoe and even house rents.

Money has a psychological effects on humans.

And for the record, if u slap anybody for saying his mind, Dem fit beat u very well. E don happen for my area. Try dey calm down.

Let the politicians do whatever pleases them, we don't have a government in this country.
I have told myself, I will never vote for anyone again in my life. Peter Obi had my last vote and nobody will have it again even my wife won't get my vote

Minimum wage won't be increase to 100k, very few state government can pay that amount. It should be within 50k-70k and not every state government will be able to adjust it up to that amount sef.

Increasing minimum wage will just give workers the false impression that they have more money not knowing that it will lead to a mutual increase in the inflation rate and a strong reduction in the value of the naira further causing more damage; things will just balance themselves out.

Concrete steps need to be taken but these things need time and Tinubu has no magic wand. The economy has been in a mess for a long time and we either put an end to it now of suffer more serious consequences later.

Christians, pray for your country.

It's only lack of deep thoughts, selfishness and a rare kind of stupidity that will make someone advocate for a "no increase in minimum wage" in the Nigeria of today. Fine, there'll be money in circulation, inflation will be fuelled...bla bla bla. But have you considered the fact that even traders and service providers are lamenting low patronage because purchasing power has reduced to almost zero for an average Nigerian? The truth is that higher earnings would improve the overall standard of living for government workers and even other salary/wage earners by providing them with a more appropriate income level to handle the cost of living increases and this transmits to the open market, the service providers and everyone in the country one way or the other. Subsequently, other employers will increase their salaries and there'll be a level of fairness in the job market.

How do you increase the purchasing power of the Naira? Mind you they just decreased the purchasing power of the Naira with this policy.

The problem we have in this country is proactive planning and political will to execute, all of these problems would have been taken into cognizance before a policy is implemented.

As regards minimum wage, since the government don't put plans in place for a better economy which the people surely will benefit from such, they better lift the minimum wage upwards though not at an astronomical percentage.

Inflation rate has been on a double digit since the last administration resulting in the depreciation of the purchasing power of Nigerians.

How will the Government increase the purchasing power of the people when all their actions leads to the decline in the purchasing power? Nigerian leaders don't have the interest of Nigeria at heart, very pathetic.

Ceteris Paribus, if the price of fuel after subsidy removal rose to to 600/L from 200/L, it is only right for the minimum wage increase by 3times from 30,000 to 90,000+.
