Conner44:Bros, one of the BIGGEST mistake of my life was post secondary sch...Took me about 3 yrs before I could get admission, all because I wanted to go to Unilag and they gave a course I don't want...All in all, 3 years Waka...Now what was I doing within that 3 years? I got a cleaning job with a company in surulere, salary was 5k, transport taken care of, fairly okay. In my dept, we do floor/tiles polishing and that was the job that took me to nearly all the embassies at Walter Carrington....My regret? I should have used that period to learn valuable skills, any of what you mentioned above or something else. Just maybe, my life could have been better.... A friend of mine, grew up on the street together, learnt some furniture/cabinet/upholstery work within that period, later went to Lasu. He graduated about 5 years after myself and he reached out for a job. I helped him get a placement where I worked. He was with us for 3 years but always complaining about money, about not finding joy...Later he left and went back to his furniture business, started small..Through goodwill he was getting all furniture work from the company and alot of referrals..Up till now, if I jam the guy invoice like this, fear dey catch me, he gave me 500k when I had my baby earlier this year, no other gift came close. Bros, if I had jump into Uber driving then, assuming there was, I would probably still regret it!!! |

dapotemi:Let me tell you a story. My father was a career banker. He woke up by 4:30am every day to beat traffic in order to arrive at work before his resumption time. He came back home nothing earlier than 8pm every day as well. I grew up for most of my early life not even waking or sleeping in the presence of my dad. I only had time with him on weekends. I missed my dad so much back then but I understood why he was always away. He was a banker working to give I and my siblings a better life. He retired after 37 years of living this way. He's still alive today and doing well too but he can't get back all those years he wasn't around to bond with us his kids. Till today my mom is still the one who underands us kids as individuals while my dad still thinks about us as his responsibilities like housing, clothing, feeding etc. It's now part of his psyche. I later grew older and vowed never to be like him. I can't be at a desk for a better part of the day everyday and earn how much? My kids growing and changing every time I see them on weekends. Not knowing their habits or friends except my wife informs me. No chance to play or do home works with them because by the time I'm home they might already be sleepy or I'm the one whose feeling same. I grew up most of my life watching my dad from afar because his desk job robbed us of time with him . Did he make the money? Yes he did, but I still saw many of his mates who were into several other things without being chained to a desk doing far better than he was. After he retired he tried his hands at many businesses but they failed because he couldn't control certain aspects of them. He had spent all his life working at a desk and found it hard to adjust to life after work. He didn't have time to learn any new skills or businesses asides his what was always waiting for him at his desk. His finances dwindled and he encountered several setbacks. To God be the glory we his kids were already of age and independence had set in uo assist our parents. By the time he realised that he had spent so much time facing one direction and forgot there were more roads to follow when he arrived at the eventual career T junction waiting in front of us all. If you know you're living your life like my dad on this thread please think again about your future. That desk job will end one day and then what? How much will your pension be? How often will you get it? What will be its purchasing power by then? You say you drive after working to earn a side pay but at the same time downplay the role of driving as a verifiable skill. It is well. |

Person leave home by 5 yesterday and got home 8pm after 15 hours, because his oga went home early. Else, he for reach house late. The only reason he even grossed 22k that he's showing off na because oga comot by 3. ![]() Therefore on a normal day, 1. he doesn't get home by 8 2. If he gets home by 8 he doesn't gross 22k everyday he goes to answer oga sir for office. Same yesterday, my first trip was 10:30am. My last trip was 10:56pm. After 12hrs and 30 mins But somehow, na who use 15hrs work dey lecture una on mental health and una dey listen? Someone I sleep better than? ![]() Okay. Make una analyze this one. If I gross 45k in less than 13hrs. How much do you think I can gross from 5am to 8pm, a range of 15hrs? Full-time driver has more time to himself than you do, and grossed more than you do. Your salary inclusive. Make una dey listen to their rubbish ehn... Dey play.

izzou:Well at least the UK once advertised . . . I just wanted IFSHR have that at the back of his mind for future reference ![]() Now i also understood what dapo said perfectly. I just wanted to also point out that he can't use his own personal situation to mirror others here. We are all different individuals from different backgrounds trying to make ends meet one way or the other. Many people who carry phones and log into nairaland daily aren't graduates like him or even have the time of day to open new books to read up trying to learn new skills on the fly. Some are also having some psychological issues that could hamper their cognitive ability to read, comprehend and assimilate written directions properly. Take for instance omoapena. We all know he has a hp contract on his neck and has been coming to this thread weekly making cryptic posts that show he's struggling with his chosen hustle. Remember that unlike dapo the vehicle isn't his yet, also maybe he's married with wife(ves) and kids to feed, rent, medical and inflated fees to pay etc, now tell me what time he can carve out of his already tight daily schedule to learn a new skill without affecting his ability to cater for him and his families daily well being and also remit his weekly contractual stipend towards the hp agreement he currently has on his neck? I feel for him that's why anytime he cries I always reply even if he dismisses my help. I know he has a bird in hand but others want him to drop it and dive headfirst into the bush in search of more. I want him to master this hustle so he can pay off his hp agreement and move onto it her things ASAP. I also attempted learning data analysis as omoapena is planning to do. I joined up with a class that was advertised here on this same thread a while ago. I went three-quarters of the way but had to drop off because it clashed with many things I had going on at the time. The knowledge is still there but I don't have it completely. It wasn't easy at all to learn it to the point I reached before life paused my education in that aspect. Will I learn further? Yes of course, but I will need time and calm to face it squarely to achieve perfection. Someday soon I hope. I am a man that likes to try my hands at numerous businesses as far I have the capital and ability to control its dynamics. Yes I still have a desk job but I also import and trade goods, render specialized services which I charge for and create employment opportunities for people when I can. Unlike my dad, i will not work at my desk until my retirement age no matter the pay I receive. That life won't be mine. Stanbic pensions still pays me but how much? I see their alerts and emails and smile. It's nothing compared to what my friends earn daily running their own businesses. I go to the market and visit a friend and have to wait for his accounts manager to finish a meeting with him before I can go into his office to say hi. He never worked for anyone in his life except when he understudied his business. He is a simple trader. Buying and selling. I want to become like him real soon by the grace of God. So izzou all I'm trying to day is that when nairaland first began, everything was centered at a place and people plus information was thrown everywhere. Thankfully seun in his wisdom decided to carve out sections and threads for specific knowledge to be gained. This thread here is for those who want to perfect their skills in ehailing in lagos . . . I am pleading for those who have other things going for them to at least allow people like omoapena and other uneducated peeps to achieve the aim of this thread before forcing them out of the nest while they haven't perfectly learnt how to fly. There are sections for learning programming, agriculture, phone repairs, sales etc. rigjtvhere on nairaland. So why can't we allow this thread and its knowledge breathe for the sakes of those here and the ones to come If you see someone doing something better than you please ask questions and seek understanding. Don't fight against it. Nobody know everything not even Einstein did. Abeg my desk don full make I face my work before m6 bald headed oga catch me on phone I will still piss on his head I'm just watching for when rain is also falling so he won't pinpoint the source of his warm forehead when it happens ![]() |

dapotemi:As much as I agree to your points, I’ll still say they are relative cases. Let’s assume we are just hearing each other out and pray for the best towards one another. I am saying it again, I am not proud of driving, but right now it is giving me peace of mind I long for. General is talking bout dollars lately, I’ve been doing that shit when dollars was 400 and something. Friends and family hardly get naira to share or carry out project. They send thro sendwave, I credit their account. I honestly don’t like bringing private life to public and this will be my last. I only drive 4 or 5 days a week and I do attend events if need be. Just got back from Asaba from a wedding as groomsmen and you should know what that means. I have 2 wedding on the line and still part of groomsmen for one. My church does 2 Service, I can attend 7am to 9pm and still make something good on Sunday. I used to attend digging deep on Tuesday. After Covid just change my view about religion and pastors. So if you are longing for CFO, good one, but I’ve you heard of company pack up? Including the CFO? Boss we don see life, stories plenty, but GentleLife and Tojahh they hold my hands. In all fight for your head, make sure you are progressing, understand your war and fight it well to the point of you turn out a happy man. Musician them they sleep now. From Nov to Dec they will make what one won’t make in 5 years. Nah where on person stop another person start. |

UNCLE Musa. After living in the United States for 40 years and at the age of 70, Uncle Musa finally relocated to Salagie, The Gambia this year to live in his 5-bedroom house which took him 10 years to complete. Now in Gambia and in his house, Uncle Musa lives in the living room of the house downstairs while his caretaker lives upstairs in his huge master bedroom. This is because Uncle Musa cannot climb the stairs without the help of another person. Even with help, it takes him 10 minutes to make the climb. As such, Uncle Musa has decided to stay downstairs in the living room as all 5 bedrooms are upstairs. The house has a living room, toilet and kitchen downstairs; 3 rooms on the first floor and another 2 rooms (including the master bedroom) on the second/last floor. This is surely not how Uncle Musa anticipated his retirement. But that is the reality of his journey. This will be the life of many other Africans living abroad and building mansions back home. In fact, if you are building a dream house for yourself to live in and the house is not ready by the time you attain the age of 50, forget about it! Uncle Musa virtually wasted 40 years of his life doing menial jobs abroad, hoping to go and retire back home in his mansion and enjoy life. But, now he has no life to enjoy and someone else is sleeping in his master bedroom. Like most aged persons, Uncle Musa is not even able to enjoy a bottle of Malt at his age because it will shoot up his blood sugar level. Yet, he said he was working hard all his life in order to enjoy life, which includes eating and drinking the finest foods and drinks, when he retires. Now, he is only able to eat fruit and vegetable salads - and even that, without dressing! He cannot even eat any of the fine meats out there without his cholesterol sending warning signs. That is the life of Uncle Musa in retirement? This will be the story of more than half of us. The best thing to do is to take mini-retirements now and enjoy the luxuries of life now that you still have the strength to do so! We must all learn a lesson from the story of Uncle Musa. Copied from Ibrahim Sarr . |
