It is actually a shocking information/news.

In most US states $1,000 can't pay for more than 1 month rent for a 2 bedroom apartment.

That means around 150 million people are in poverty or one step away from it.

And, unlike Europe, social benefits are not as generous in the US, so if these people lose their source of income, eg their job for any reason, they are in trouble.

In addition to having little to no savings, most Americans also have large debts so it's a double whammy.

For a country with a budget of about $800 billion just for defense, it is incredible that so many of its citizens are poor, homeless, can't afford medical care etc

This is a very serious social theory issue for a young country like Nigeria that still has the opportunity to shape how it wishes to develop going forward.

Is the US showing us that in the long run, unbridled capitalism and free markets concentrate wealth in the hands of too few people while condemning a large percentage of the population to near poverty? More like we already see in Nigeria where the gap between the rich and the poor is humongous.

Do we, as a country, need to look at the Scandinavian model and not the USA's 'You are on Your Own' model?

Not true. It's simply an enlightenment not a basis of comparison. USA enjoys some of the best infrastructure and systems in the world. There is no doubt about that fact.

You are not comparing like for like.

The truth is, as rich as the USA is, too many of its citizens are in a precarious financial position.

In real terms, somebody having $1000 in the US is probably the equivalent of having may be N100,000 in Nigeria.

To give you an example, an X-ray in the US will cost about $200 (N160,000) or more. The same X-ray taken with the same machine in Nigeria may cost no more than N25,000 ($30).

$1000 doesn't go far in the US.

You are wrong.

Example, 1000K dollars will get you almost the latest iphone in the US, can 1000Naira get you not iphone but Nigerian made Charger in Nigeria? I'm even going so far, a good loaf of bread in Naira can't be bought with 1000 Naira in Nigeria.

How on earth can you even put thoughts that what 1000k dollars can do in the US is what 1000Naira can do in Nigeria, this is the most ridiculous thing I have read on this forum.

The real purchasing power of naira equivalent to 1000k might actually be around 150 to 400k naira depending on the location one is.

There are things that should never go to public, your assertion is one of them.

You are a bloody liar and you know it. cheesy.

Although $1k is a big deal in US and many people's monthly salary in US so its definitely not equivalent to 1k naira
That guy that put 1k$ and 1k naira at same par should be sent to barrack for proper drilling

Precarious positions? How many children in Nigeria go without food, medicine, and education every day just because the parents can’t pay? If you’re sacked from your job in Nigeria, can you receive unemployment and food benefits?
As for your x-ray example, The real difference is that you won’t be denied them-ray or held hostage because you can’t pay in the US. You’ll go home, get a bill in the mail, and have months and maybe years to settle the balance. Can that happen in Nigeria?
