Talk is cheap. You think profitable production is having an over bloated workforce like the nigerian civil service?

Alot of production especially is pharma and food industries are automated with few personnel ensuring set parameters and quality control are functional. You only need much personnel in management/admin and sales end part of it.

My friend you are the ignoramus. GSK globally as a company has been having problems for a long time. Their drug pipeline and drugs under patents have been shrinking. They even had to sell their Lucozade and Ribena business some years ago to help restructure their business. Like I said the problem with GSK is they don’t have enough drugs under patent. Stop viewing g everything Nigeria as bad news. You should be celebrating that Nigerian companies are effectively competing with foreign pharmaceuticals to they point where our local companies are driving them out of business and keeping the profits in Nigeria.

Name a drug/vaccine GSK sell in Nigeria and I will tell you the generic equivalent either manufactured in Nigeria or Imported from India.

This pull out is not about Nigeria but about the uncompetitiveness of GSK.

Like I said the fact that a local pharmaceutical Fidson has a staff strength of 219 compared to the 280 for a big multinational GSK with all their power and might tells you they never had or had lost market share in Nigeria.

Be it pharmaceuticals, FMCG we should all be celebrating that local manufacturers are coming of age and driving the multinationals away. Be it things like yoghurt, soft drinks, beer, medicines, soaps, edible oil, foodstuffs etc, Nigerian manufacturers are coming of age, holding their own and beating the multinationals and driving them out of the country.

This is why the federal government should immediately implement the national drug distribution guidelines (NDDG) and ensure that the coordinated wholesale centers (CWCs) replace the current open drug markets system.

Doing the above will ensure quality control of drugs being imported and distributed in Nigeria by government regulatory agencies such as PCN, NAFDAC, SON etc.

The current system gives room for any foreign pharma company to dump whatever products they have into the open drug markets! This has contributed to the declining quality of healthcare delivery and life expectancy in the country.

Government seriously need to take drastic actions to close all the open drug markets and ensure that foreign pharma companies stop seeing Nigeria as dumping ground for unwholesome products.

A whole GSK employs ionly 290 people? doesnt that show that they dont have much of an impact in the economy? Like Unilever a few weeks ago, the truth is much of their business has been taken over by domestic companies. In the case of GSK, much of their medicines are out of patent. Every dick and harry is manufacturing pain killers and generic anti-biotics, we see their adverts all the time on youtube or tv. people are complaining that Augmentin has gone up but Augmentin is merely a brand name for amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium, there are cheaper generic Amoxicilin in the market because they are out of patent. thats why they are leaving. they do not have enough drugs still under patent.

The way pharmaceutical companies work is this: you do research and develop a medicine. youare granted a patent which may last 10, 20 25 years etc. During that period, the medicine may cost you N100 to produce but you can sell it for N10,000 to recover your r&d costs. Once your patent is over any tom dick and harry can manufacture the same product and sell it for N100 and sell it for N200. Nobody is going to see the same product for N200 and pay N10,000 simply because it is manufactured by GSK. Thats the problem with GSK, not that the Nigerian economy is bad.

The departure of these companies is not neccesarily a statement on the state of Nigeria but more a statement of the inability of these companies to compete with cheaper local manufacturers.

Thanks for this, my first thought after reading the thread was how everywhere is filled with paracetamol, karaole, alabunkun, and many other analgesic, so many brand of amoxicillin everywhere, but the the thoughtless, hate filled, illiterates have already started dropping their poo all over the thread, doing what they know how to do best. General nuisance and obnoxious.

For those of you trying to give Nigeria a bad name before the global community because your preferred candidate lost the election (this is happening for the first time in Nigeria no thanks to a particular region), you should know that, even if you don't have the opportunity or capacity to travel out someone close you will... what you do today will hunt you tomorrow

If you doubt, look for eg Augmentine, colchicine to buy.
I bought augmentin 1mg for 18k yesterday.

An international company just exited the country due to the harsh business environment and you're downplaying it like it's nothing. If 10 of them exit, how many will be left?

They can't compete with Indian manufacturers and marketers who now dominate the Nigerian market.

Say hello to King Charles as you return home.

It's cheaper that way for them, but they still won't be able to compete with Indian manufacturers due to low cost of production in India.

It’s not because they can’t produce at low cost. It’s because GSK doesn’t bri.be.l and there Asian companies do without blinking eyes.

It’s one the reasons P&G left Nigeria.

I worked with GSK for over 10 years as a senior manager and I know the system like the back of my hands.

With the level of Naira falling, the products would be too costly for Iberians to buy because GSK builds one of the best pharmacies products in the world.
We shouldnt forget that the company has billions stock in Nigerian banks which it hasn’t been able to repatriate, for years, due to our CBN policy.

I was sad when I was briefed that there would be an all hands meeting yesterday because I already knew that would be the outcome of the meeting.

I really miss my company.

it's not about Nigeria but the business model they want to operate.
Mass produce the product in one factory and distribute it worldwide. Production cost is reduced as economics of scale sets in.

You clearly do not know what you are talking about. 290 people for a company like GSK is peanuts. Ordinary Fidson a nigerian company in the same industry employs 215, UAC for instance employs over 1,300 people. MTN employs 1,700. Dangote employs 11,000 excluding their transport workers, Guiness employs close to 1,000, UBA employs 20,000.

The point is they are not that important. they employee strength in minimal for a multinational of their size and their products are replaceable and indeed have been replaced by local manufacturers which is why they are quitting.

They only have name, they contribute little to our economy and exploit us with huge prices, they are a parasitic company...good riddance!!

dude before you start yapping nonsense, why not look at the value chain in the pharmaceutical business for a country like Nigeria 290 is far okay considering the multiplier effect in indirect jobs and the pharma industry has a high emphasis on Quality control standards, so it is not about employing a large workforce, but ensuring lean manufacturing by way of Automation. Astra Zeneca doesn't have as much employees as Heineken Netherlands. The issue is that the company through indirect jobs employs maybe up to 900 staff. The issue is that the harsh business environment is impacting everyone, so please stop this feeble attempt at downplaying the situation we are in.

Well done mr. Ignoramus.

Dont digress into GSK selling off a portfolio and all that. That's not the bone of contention.

Your line of arguement is that a big company like GSK having a staff strength of 290 is poor. Dont run away from that. I still went ahead and schooled you on what were the basic rudiments in production.
We've been there, we've done that.

The type of you will never succeed in production. Send a proposal to BOI with this mentality, and see how it will be trashed with the speed of light.

However, I will still go ahead and engage you in your new line of arguement.
GSK nigeria has a production plant in nigeria. The organisation is managed by nigerians. Most shareholders are nigerians and the company is a player in the NSE. you are now comparing such an organisation to a one man business that import drugs from india or china and give to graduates on the streets to sell. You are definitely on colos

First off, importing from india and china means we are outsourcing the most knowledge based and critical part of pharma jobs to china and india. We are not adding value to the production value chain. We only succeed in keeping Indians and chinese employed. Same time wasting our hard earned forex while making india and china richer.
Those companies that import from china and india, pls mention any one of them that is a player in NSE. none!
In the Nigerian pharma industry, GSK are basically at the top when it comes to employee enumeration and welfare. They are top shelf. None of those mushroom companies who import pay their staff as half as GSK. Not to talk about car policies for the field reps and other welfare packages.

No matter how expensive their brands are and the competition there in, they still remain the brands of choice in all states and federal teaching hospitals, in all FMCs, in all boutique private hospitals and in all boutique pharmacies nationwide.
Their business model was never to sell to 200m nigerians, they are out to service only the elites. That's why their products are best in class.

You can name 50 brands of antibiotic that you will think they are in competition with augmenting, but when your elites fall sick, they will insist on paying 17k for GSK branded augmenting than paying 3k for those unknown brands imported from china and india.
It is what it is!

Rolls royce is not meant for all. It's a business model
