Nigeria's Senate is composed of 60 Senators from the Northern rwgion and 49 from the Southern part of the Country

NORTHERN NIGERIAN SENATORS RESPONSE TO THE NIGER REPUBLIC COUP.

Press Release

August 4, 2023

Northern Senators condemn Niger coup, caution against use of military power
...advocate diplomatic channel to address situation
...frown at economic, other sanctions.

We, the Northern Senators Caucus of the 10th Senate under the leadership of Sen. Abdul Ahmad Ningi, note with concern and condemn in its entirety the unfortunate development in Niger Republic, where the military forcefully upstaged a democratically elected government of President Mohammed Bazoum.

The Northern Senators also take cognizance of the efforts of the ECOWAS leaders under the chairmanship of our Dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in resolving the situation in Niger Republic. The emphasis, however should be focused on political and diplomatic means to restore democratic government in Niger Republic.

We also take exception to use of the of military force until other avenues as mentioned above are exhausted as the consequences will be casualties among the innocent citizens who go about their daily business. Besides, about seven northern states who shared border with Niger Republic namely Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Yobe and Borno will be negatively affected.

We are also aware of the situation of Mali, Burkina Faso and Libya, which may affect the seven Northern states, if military force is used. There is serious implication for our country, if military force is used without exhausting all the diplomatic channels.

As democrats and representatives of the people we are here by urging our colleagues to observe due diligence in invoking section 5 sub section (4) (a) and (b) of 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended.

Sen. Suleiman A. Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD.

We don't need these wars.
Ecowas nations should not allow tinubu desperation for power move them to take the wrong decision. It will backfire.

Going to fight our own brothers because of this is stupidity.

Tinubu is a man that is so desperate for power. He is willing to do anything to hold on to power even if it means an unnecessary war.

Nigeria today is under the seige of a political coup. A coup against the constitution of a country is worse than a military coup. Democracy is dead in our nation.

Tinubu knows he does not have a chance with the cases in court. He is willing to do anything that will in anyway aid his political coup in Nigeria.

Tinubu does not have the moral right to engage Niger. He is more of a risk to democracy in africa.
The africa union should engage democratic leaders like Goodluck Jonathan, ruto of kenya, zambia president or any african leader who has a good personal record of democracy .
Pmb would have been one to lead such delegation to our brothers in niger unfortunately he is one of major players of the coup we presently have in Nigeria and so has no moral strength to engage the coup plotters in niger.

Nigeria had the greatest opportunity to become the role model of democracy for fellow africa nations in our presidential elections but the evil and miscreants politicians and corrupt INEC officials destroyed it.
Lets hope the judiciary will restore the dignity of our nation.

That is why the diplomatic option is still active. Once diplomacy fails, the coupists will be forced out and legitimate power returned. The Sultan of Sokoto and Gen Abdulsalami will advice the government. Diplomacy for the coupists to entrench themselves in power will not be allowed. Nigeria is not fighting war with Niger so the Senators are in order if it's a war.

you took the words outta my mouth, some ignorant kids don't know that Niger republic is an extension on Northern Nigeria. Half of their population is Hausa with kanuri and Fulani. What's even worse is that those peeps have sympathy for themselves and many of the bandits operating in Nigeria are from Niger republic. Tinubu should better watch his back and find a diplomatic solution to the crisis rather than shooting himself on the legs. I have a feeling this might be a trap for him. But again let his foolish supporters keep shouting Igbos up and down
This is exactly what you were saying here sweerychick.. Tinubu doesn't realise this might trigger his own ouster

It seems there's going to be no war. Senate approval will have to be sought at some point. If Tinubu wants to bypass them he incurs a minor risk of impeachment.
