Nobody is celebrating military rule. You people should stop being deliberately dishonest. We said don't drag the country into war with Niger

Guinea and Mali are countries that have roadmap to civil rule. What is it about Niger that's so urgent and pressing to the point you want to invade them within 2 weeks.

Why are you adamant on starting war that you cannot predict the outcome
Easy Rawlins : A man once told me that you step out of your door in the morning, and you are already in trouble. The only question is are you on top of that trouble or not?
This is where we are. Whether we want to be involved or not, we share a large border with this country. By now it should be obvious the coup is sponsored by Russia's wagner. The coup ultimately is about resources. We also have resources that wagner would love to get their hands on. It did not end with Mali, it did not end with Sudan. It will not end with Niger.

This is also how it started with Germany in ww2. One country at a time.

Whether we want to be involved or not we are involved. It is now a question of whether we want to be on top of the situation or if we want the situation to be on top of us.

Understand that wagner/Russia WILL NOT STOP. Especially as we have lithium and gold in the North. Gold that China is already stealing supported by bandits.

There is a new alignment Russia, China, Saudi, iran. All very strange bedfellows. But all capable of sponsoring more strife in Nigeria towards their own ends. Saudi and northern salafists, iran and the shiites, China and the bandits. For all we know Russia is already sponsoring esn. (they did attack a us convoy)

So we are already in it. Maybe not neck deep, but up to the knees.

We are Nigerians and we should understand this. When /if robbers start operating in your area, you are involved whether you want to be or not.

For all we know, just as America already knew that Russia would invade Ukraine, they already knew about the Russian backed coup and have already briefed Tinubu.

ECOMOG entered Liberia in 1990 for peace keeping mission and withdrew officially in 1998.If u think Nigeria will just brisk in and out of Niamey and Bozoum will be reinstated as president, maybe u should have a rethink.

Bode George who was in the Nigerian military as a senior officer until 1997 has this to say about how the military intervention was funded then and the economic reality of today :

If you remember, Nigeria, almost singularly, financed ECOMOG military operations and that was when our economy was better. Which economy are we going to use now to finance a full military operation in Niger Republic, when Mali and Burkina Faso have threatened to take sides with Niger Republic?
As at 2021 Femi Gbajabiamila lamented that 91% of Nigeria's defence budget is spent on recurrent expenditure like paying salaries and welfare leaving only 9% for capital expenditure like purchase of equipment, arms and ammunitions.

But yet somehow u think this same Nigeria should be in the forefront of rallying poorer ECOWAS member countries to lead a military action in a country that is 1.4 times bigger than it in land mass where they could deal.with Guirella warfare for years to come.

It's going to be a long way down the road once the first shots are fired.

not sure the analogy matches.

by the time nigeria came in - Liberia had completely broken down
it had multiple warlords
going by that, there is a case for swift intervention before the situation breaks down into sudan style civil war.

right now, it is more like the case of laurent gbagbo - a person posturing on the seat and making threats.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Liberian_Civil_War

a lot of what happened in liberia may just repeat itself . it started with a coup in the 1980s, and was a full fledged civil war in 10 years.
especially with the players involved.

There were other military interventions by ECOMOG, but at what cost to each member country? That's the point.

Nigeria practically finances major part of those interventions. Why are we towing that part now when the government of Nigeria has been telling us we are broke for the past 2 years?

Why are we leading a military action at a time.we can't even afford to subsidize petrol again for our own citizens ?

because they share a border with us. whether we want it or not, we are involved. if it eventually goes the way the liberia went, whatever happens in niger can overflow into nigeria. charles taylor, if i recall, was a major sponsor of the RUF in sierra leone. easy to get blood diamonds if a country is at war, just as it is easy to steal gold from zamfara if there is persistent insecurity

The country will obviously engulf into civil war that was last years.

I don't even understand all these talks about democracy at all cost. Paul Biya is a 90 year old man that has been the president of cameroun before my parents even met. Yet he has the backing of France and America to continue to rule even when he's almost wearing diapers.

Is that the kind of democracy tey practise in France and America? Do they have a situation where the president persecutes member of the opposition and silence dissenting voices? The hypocrisy is just stinking to high heavens.

They didn't just start sharing border with us today. They are having an internal dispute amongst themselves with the military sacking the democratic government (which is not the first in Africa and won't be the last)

Coups will always happen especially in the Francophone countries due to the French policy of assimilation which we've discussed extensively in the past.

We do not have the resources to be doing big brother Africa like we used to in the past. Times have changed.

Even if the military action is successful, there's no guarantee the country Niger will experience peace going forward. Something already shifted. They will most likely continue to have internal security challenges, things don't just go back to normal afterwards.

People have their own version of democracy

Russia Putin 20yrs plus
Germany Angela Merkel 18yrs
Mubarak, Ghadafi Saddam also all spent over 30yrs each

Russia and Germany are not running democracy

Mubarak, Gadaffi and Sadam were not running democracy either.

That is my point. These people should stop pretending they are fighting for any yeye democracy. What we can call what is happening in most west African countries is civilian rule that's all

Let's just be honest in all we are doing

why would you be surprised if russia is providing support for ESN? that is the way these things go. the ANC run SA is aligned with russia and will always be because the west did nothing about apartheid during the cold war because of political expediency. the west did not support biafra then, and will not support them now. maybe you do not realize it, but for all intents and purposes, we are back to cold war 2.0.

West vs China/Russia/Saudi/Iran.

and a major feature of the cold war was if the west is aligned with the govt of country A, Russia aligns with rebels/movements fighting/opposed to the government of country A

i am sure aljazeera is also western propaganda

Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who remains active despite leading a failed mutiny against the Russian army’s top brass last month, has hailed Niger’s military coup as good news and offered his fighters’ services to bring order.

A voice message on Telegram app channels associated with Wagner, which they said was Prigozhin, did not claim involvement in the coup but described it as a moment of long-overdue liberation from Western colonisers and made what looked like a pitch for his fighters to help keep order.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/7/19/prigozhin-in-video-tells-wagner-troops-to-prepare-for-africa?traffic_source=KeepReading

A new video appears to show the head of Russia’s mercenary Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, welcoming his fighters to Belarus, telling them they would take no further part in the Ukraine war for now but to prepare for “a new journey to Africa“.

The footage, published by Prigozhin’s press service on Telegram on Wednesday, is the first video evidence of his whereabouts since Wagner’s failed mutiny last month against Russia’s top military brass.

Russia is building support by giving african countries debt forgiveness and food

https://saharareporters.com/2023/07/28/moscow-has-forgiven-23billion-debts-owed-african-countries-russian-president-putin#:~:text=Videos

The Russian government has written off over $20 billion of debt historically owed by African nations, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

President Putin who announced the debts forgiveness at a plenary session of the Russia-Africa forum in St. Petersburg, also said that Moscow would allocate more funds to help with the development of the continent, according to RT report.

“The total amount of debt of the African countries written off by Russia amounts to $23 billion dollars with another $90 million to be allocated for the same purposes,” Putin stated, with reference to historical trade and finance links between Moscow and Africa.

On Thursday, the president said Russia would provide hard-pressed countries on the continent with free grain. Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somali, the Central African Republic, and Eritrea will each receive between 25,000 and 50,000 tons of grain, while Moscow will cover the delivery costs of the shipments.

In March, the Russian leader highlighted the growth of mutual trade between Russia and African countries, saying it could open up additional opportunities for the process of establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Launched in 2021, the AfCFTA is expected to become a continental market with a total GDP of more than $3 trillion, making Africa one of the leaders of the multipolar world.

According to Putin, Russia is in favor of establishing ties with AfCFTA both through the Eurasian Economic Union and on a bilateral level.
