The reason I joined nairaland was to learn about the Nigerian culture and ways of life because I just knew you guys as Nigerians and nothing much.

Do you consider yourself an African simply because you're black and of an African origin, or there are certain virtues or cultural practices that distinguish you from the others?

Since Nigeria has got more than 200 tribes, I'd like to know.. cheesy cheesy cheesy

I'll start with me, I believe I'm an African because of the following:

1. I'm very much fluent in my home language Sepedi and I got an A+ in it during my matric year.
2. At home we speak strictly Sepedi, it doesn't matter whether you're educated or live in a white dominant community. Once you set your foot into the family house, you speak Sepedi, unless there are few exceptions.... Our parents can speak good English, but they just don't want us to speak it at home.
3. I can also speak five other SA languages... Sotho, Tswana, Zulu, a bit of Xhosa and a bit of Tsonga.
4. When I was 11 years old, I had the honour to attend the Sepedi initiation school whereby we were taught the virtues that come with transitioning from childhood to teenhood as Pedi girls.
5. I can recite my family clan names.

So I'd like to know about you Nigerians.. smiley smiley smiley

That's nice... But being a Nigerian is a nationality and not an ethnicity... That's why I didn't mention my nationality.

Because a white person can also identify as a Nigerian by nationality, yet that wouldn't mean he or she's an African.

Interesting post. I won't answer the question directly. Rather, I will say what makes one an African is his/her connection (ancestral) to one of many of the ethnic nationalities in Africa as well as both the willingness to be identified as such and commitment to upholds the positive cultural values, upliftment and well being of the people of that ethnic nationality and of other African ethnic nationalities both home and
abroad, provided they too are of same perspective as earlier on enumerated.

Let me also add, as I have always strongly believed and will continue to advocate for, deploying all assets, political and otherwise, as time, chance, providence and hard work will make possible that: The need to redraw Africa's borders to reflect its indigenous ethnic nationality realities is one way to address the challenges we face ( whether Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya etc) and that will lead the way for a more prosperous and stable future.

I want to know your heritage as an African, not your race or passports.

Sure, Africans are black, but the black race is not only limited to Africa because there are black Americans, black Europeans, black Asians, and black Caribbeans... And even though they're of Africa descent, they don't identify as Africans.

So far according to me, you only made three valid points out of the nine, number 1, 4 and 5.

Let me help your curiosity a bit.

I am from yoruba ethnic of Nigeria/ Africa. Yoruba ethnic group are majorly in 6 states in Nigeria and minority in state like Kogi, Delta and Edo. Yoruba are also in Benin Republic. We are known by our language (Yoruba - even though there are a different Yoruba dialets(, dance, tradition of respect for elders, fashion sense and food.

In terms of respect for elders, females are expected to kneel down to greet elders while males are expected to prostate to greet elders. Our foods are majorly swallow, processed and combined. For example we have preference for mixing soups.

Our fashion sense is iro and buba (wrapper and blouse) for women. Our native cloth is Aso-oke/Ofi regularly matched with fila (cap) for men or gele (head tie) for women.

Through my family's ballads, panegyric, pedigree I confirmed that I am Aboriginal Yoruba

My forefathers have been living in and around Ekiti state Nigeria for a long time.

One of them introduced the initiation rites for young males to transit into adult hood in our present village

My ancestors have lived in different villages in Ekiti Yorubaland.

Don't care where you come from..... as long as you're a Black man .... you're an African ... don't mind your nationality you've got the identity of an African. (Peter Tosh)

When Idi Amin ruled Uganda ... there were Indians and others born and bred in Uganda ... 100% Ugandans .... he chased them all out and declared Uganda is for Africans, Black Africans.... nationality does not count. If you're Black... you're African.

Another view .... one can be considered African if he is Black and can blend into any African tribe.

And Idi Amin was dictator and didn't care about his people... Ugandans suffered under his rulership, so you can't tell me that what he did was reasonable.

If president Biden now chases all the blacks out of America and says he's now sending them back home in Africa because they belong there, would you be in support of it?
