Why ECOWAS Should Tread With Caution On Niger. Opinion by socialmediaman(op):
I did echo an initial support for a decisive action against Niger, however, on a closer look, Nigeria and ECOWAS may need to think twice about this. While I am NOT in support of military rule expanding once more into West Africa, in the case of Niger, there needs to be more caution. Let me explain why.

First, if the people of Niger truly support the military leadership as portrayed by the media, this means that ECOWAS will be fighting not just the military junta, but also the people. I have seen wars that could not be won by even the most sophisticated military in the world just because of sabotage and lack of cooperation of the civilians and locals. Remember that there are rules in war, which means, once you go to war, the international media starts watching and reporting, and even if the locals start working against you, you're not allowed to retaliate.

Second, Niger is a neighboring country of Nigeria. Once you start a war in Niger, there will be humanitarian crisis. The longer the war, the bigger the crisis. Niger already is one of the poorest countries of the world so this doesn't look very good for their neighbors.

Third, there is a big risk of rise in insurgency. The US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 is known to be the major cause of the rise of groups like ISIS. Once you create a leadership crisis in any country, especially one that has a history with radical groups, you risk given rise to insurgent groups and more radical ideologies.

Fourth. For those thinking that war is all about firepower, ask about the US mission in Afghanistan. After 20 years and spending of about $2 trillion dollars, it took little to no resistance for rebel groups to take back government in Afghanistan.

Let's hear your thoughts.

cool

As a military commander...

*If you want to lead your people resign from service honourably and contest and election... Let people decide if they want you

* Why is State running Mass Media to control Narrative.. if people truly want coup let free press make report

* How exactly will a Military man provide enough leadership to lead them out of Economic mess, now with multiple sanction

*France is the biggest Uranium trade partner they have and that's where the revenue comes from

*Russia is a major supplier of Gas accross Europe and gas is energy source, Nigeria is building gas pipeline from Niger Delta to challenge Russia supply

I agree with you on elections, but think about the bigger forces in play here. Some African countries support them, they are seeking international support, they may cause a bigger humanitarian crisis in Nigeria. Lastly, will the northern leaders support you on this? Are you ready for all this?

As for Northern leaders... Only National Assembly can decide through votes

1. Since you put "if", it shouldn't have been there at all. So no response to this.

2. It is not an Ecowas vs Niger war. It is Ecowas vs coup plotters. This is not the first
time Ecowas is removing head of states that have local support.

3. Failure to act will guarantee a civil war in the near future. Also, there will be permanent arm sanction
against the junta which will weaken it in its fight with various jihadist and rebel groups. More arms will
flow into Nigeria
I think the lack of political knowledge about Niger Republic
is leading to erroneous conclusion your part. Rise of ISIS was a protest against the Shiite government of Iraq. ISIS
got destroyed when a political settlement was reached.
Sudan is currently fighting a civil war despite no action against the coup plotters.

4. US mission in Afghanistan is to punish the entrenched Taliban government, occupy the country, and "civilise" the populace.
In short, it was an ideological war.
Ecowas mission is to simply remove coup plotters who have been in power for days and replace
them with civilian government which have been in power for years.
You are confusing regular army with ideological warlords.
When Niger capital falls, all the national army will pledge their allegiance to the new Chief of Army Staff.

I don't support any war. Further and stricter sanctions should be imposed while the coup leader comes up with a plan to relinquish power. What was his bases for the coup in the first place? What was he thinking, that there will not to blow back to his actions? Military rule doesn't favour the masses. Sane should be done to the remaining military ruled West African countries.

The Votes of National Assembly is needed when Nigeria is going to war with another country.. e. g Nigeria Vs Niger.. but Nigeria isn't going to War with Niger.. It's ECOWAS vs Niger Juntas... and if there will be millitary intervention to restore constitutional order, it will be standby forces of ECOWAS Nation.. I want to believe the force has always been in place with its own commanding structures, it's not as if Nigeria will just be deploying
