Niger’s military says it will prosecute deposed President Mohamed Bazoum for treason, hours after a group of senior Islamic scholars said the country’s coup leaders are open to diplomacy to resolve their standoff with West Africa’s regional bloc.

In a statement read out on national television late on Sunday, a spokesman for Niger’s military laid out the charges against Bazoum as “high treason and undermining the internal and external security” of the country.

ECOWAS has severed financial transactions and electricity supplies as well as closed borders with landlocked Niger, blocking much-needed imports to one of the world’s poorest countries.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris, reporting from Katsina on Nigeria’s border with Niger, said the charges against Bazoum were likely to “increase tensions between the military in Niger and the international community”.

“This statement is an indication the military isn’t about to let Bazoum go. The charges they’ve announced could result in very serious repercussions for Bazoum,” Idris said.

Bazoum, 63, and his family have been held at the president’s official residence in Niamey since the coup on July 26, with international concern mounting over their conditions in detention.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for Bazoum’s reinstatement, imposing severe economic sanctions on Niger and threatening military intervention if civilian rule is not restored.

Still, the West African bloc, which has approved the deployment of a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in Niger, has said it remains committed to finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

The spokesman for Niger’s military, Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, in his statement on Sunday, dismissed concerns over Bazoum’s health, saying the deposed leader had seen his doctor the previous day.

“After this visit, the doctor raised no problems regarding the state of health of the deposed president and members of his family,” he said.

Abdramane went on to slam ECOWAS sanctions on Niger, saying the “illegal, inhumane and humiliating” measures were making it difficult for people to access medicines, food and electricity.

I still don't know this former president's offence. Coup plotters always table some dodgy reasons to justify why they carry out a coup.

Last we heard, they said Nigeria would have been affected if they had not acted, but they still fail to give the exact reason (s) on why they acted.

An illegitimate and treasonous military junta want to prosecute the legitimate and constitutional leader of the country for high treason?

This military fools think we are still in the 1980s?

Which court will the illegitimate regime that has committed treason against the constitution of the country approach to charge the President with treason?

It is typical for every military coup to come up with reasons why the coup was needed.

That itself is to show that they know they have committed treason against the constitution of the country.

Like Idi-Amin of Uganda, they come in with celebrations by the ignorant citizens who soon become the victims of dictatorship, by the time the citizens realise and try to run out of the country, it is always already too late.

In this current case of Niger, it is the coupist that will attempt to run out of Niger, which is already too late.

The President would resume his tenure in the next few weeks, and the coupists would all be prosecuted for treason.

Thumbs up 👍! But in some countries they reward criminality

While Algeria has agreed to supply them with electricity free of charge, you will not see such reportage here on Nairaland anymore undecided

They are united stirring their country in the right direction, fake reporters are here writing something else grin grin

It's a shame, I tell you undecided

These Niger people should better be careful with this ebola disease that has affected a country of over 200 million people in less than two months. If it can happen to Nigeria where it claims it is originated, how much more another country.
My own submission is that they should help us seize buhari's loot and return it when we have a legitimate president.

Lol cheesy
I now think this is a kind of witch hunt and the cycle might continue. Once the person you dislike gets into power, the powers that be teams up and over throws him via a coup and the cycle continues.

I understand the grievances, how can you impoverish your people and give the colonists unhindered access to the nations wealth? Is this the type of democracy that is practiced in France?

Maybe the junta want to use him as a bargaining chip. Now that the sanctions are bitting harder and new infrastructural projects cancelled in Niger, they will want to tell Ecowas to lift sanctions so that the president will be pardoned.
A sign of despiration as sanctions alone in that landlocked country can cripple them in 2 or 3 months.

Though military government is an aberration, but these Nigerien putschists have proven to the world that they are the ones with a difference. Their capturing the former president was a master stroke. The man was a democratically elected president but was in cahoot with the French, US and European bodies that have continue to explore the rich Uranium of Niger thereby sabotaging his country.

They are patriots who want to free their people from the continued exploitation by their neo-colonists stranglehold which have impeded the development of their nation and the African continent.

ECOWAS and the AU are useless political chess boards all these Western influence are exploiting to help the corrupt African leaders to continue to subjugate their citizens and nations. Imagine what Pual Biya of Cameroon is doing. Tinubu was fraudulently put in government and ECOWAS said his election was free and fair.

Damnit!

This is exactly what African leaders need. The corruption in Africa is too much. Africa leaders deserves to be executed one after the other for sanity to restore back to Africa.

In a sane country like China, Tinubu, akpabio, all Nigerian senators amongst others would have since been executed on national TV by firing squad for massive corruptions and public funds embezzlement
