It is often said that lies told over and over again without being counted tends to come to be held as true; but as always, truth always catches up with it.

For over 50 years, some section of Nigerians have made it a point of duty to reinforce the narrative that the 1966 coup was an Igbo coup because it was led by Kaduna Nzeogwu, an Igbo man.

Even though these same people claim that Nzeogwu’s village and town is not Igboland, and that the rest of Nzeogwu’s kinsmen are not Igbos; a narrative they vigorously and fiercely pursue and has reinforced for decades.

But with their monopoly on the media now beginning to wane due to the advent of Social Media, their control of narrative of events, which they have often distorted to suit their primordial biases, is fading , and a more balanced narrative that captures the wholistic happenings of what transpired is now being told.

So, in regards to the 1966 coup which these elements have hitherto painted as an Igbo coup, continually giving only the names of the 7 Igbo officers who participated in the ill fated coup while leaving out other officers from other tribes who equally participated actively in the coup.

So, fined here the full list of the coup plotters and their tribes:-

1. Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu(Igbo)
2. Major Adewale Ademoyega (Yoruba) author of "Why we struck"
3. Capt. G. Adeleke(Yoruba)
4. Maj. Ifeajuna(Igbo)
5. Lt. Fola Oyewole(Yoruba) author of "The reluctant rebel"
6. Lt. R. Egbiko(Esan)
7. Lt. Tijani Katsina(Hausa/Fulani)
8. Lt. O. Olafemiyan(Yoruba)
9. Capt. Gibson Jalo(Bali)
10. Capt. Swanton(Middle Belt)
11. Lt. Hope Harris Eghagha (Urhobo)
12. Lt. Dag Warribor(Ijaw)
13. 2nd Lt. Saleh Dambo(Hausa)
14. 2nd Lt. John Atom Kpera (Tiv).

There you have it. But I’m sure that apart from Nzeogwu and Ifeajuna, you probably never heard of the names of the other guys and the question is why? And it is because some elements deliberately chose to tell a one sided story to further their ill agenda against a particular tribe and people; and after over 50 years the war ended, this same people are still hellbent on selling this same old and erroneous and fallacious narrative for the same primordial agenda.

So, I ask you, having seen the full list of the coup plotters, do you still think it was an Igbo coup?

And if your answer to the above question is “Yes”.

Then tell us why Murtala Muhammed and Buhari coups were not Fulani coups,

Tell us why Buka Suka Dimka coup was not a Plateau coup,

Tell us IBB coup was not an Hausa coup,

Tell us why Gideon Orkar’s coup was not a Tiv coup,

Tell us why Abacha coup was not a Kanuri coup,

And only the one led by Nzeogwu was given that ethnic label and reinforced till today.

Nzeogwu is not an Igbo man. Aniocha is not igbo. You can actually see people's stupidity and hatred right through their eyes. They don't hide it when it comes to Igbos.

But no matter what, igbos are still not the ones suffering in this country

Today, Aniocha is not igbo, tomorrow Anioma is the sixth Igbo state.

It is only a very foolish man from Delta North that will blindly follow an Igbo man to the chief priest without sides fully prepared.

@ Op, can you please also give us the list of the army generals that were killed?

I dey wait!

Thank you for your post! Let me ask:
Were you born in 1966? When you there when they were planning the coup? More importantly how many IGBOS die during the coup? How many Yorubas die? How many Hausas die?
I advise you go back and trace history very well. You will see that 1966 January Coup had many Hausas soldiers as causalities and an Igbo became the Head of State It is therefore tagged a coup planned by the IGBOS against Hausas. Who became the president after the coup ? Agui Ironsi! In order to deface Igbos from the coup another person should have been made Head of State and be promoted immediately as they did for Abdusalam in 1999.
The Hausas in the military saw it all ,No wonder they struck back in July same year leading to the death of many IGBOS in the North and the take over of government.
Till today , regrettably the IGBOS are still paying back for the 1966 coup and the Biafra episode.
I am Yoruba .I love IGBOS and Hausas. However I always say for an Igbo to be the Nigerian president a lot of ground work must be done. It is not as easy as that. Consultation and realignment are needed. The trust in IGBOS must be rebuilt in the hearts of Hausas.
This is a bitter truth that my Igbo friends don't want to hear. Igbo presidency is a mirage for now!

I have argued that the problem with Nigeria lies with the Yoruba. They are the ones who “broadcast” false narratives. They controlled the media space then and used it effectively to spread the falsehood against Igbo which has taken a life of its own today.

Everybody read newspapers in those days, and they belonged mostly to our South West brothers. They controlled the press machine on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and they are the people who should put out the fire they started.

But I'm not hopeful, to the contrary. The Yoruba need a “special anointing” to free themselves from hatred and “small thinking”.

It is unfortunate that all the churches their sons have founded have done nothing to stem the tide, but I am indeed happy to learn that those among them who are resistant to change have now been confined to the fringes of societal advancement by the moderate and reasonable Yoruba brethren. The McOluomo's are no longer the toast of Fuji praise singers, isn't God great?.

The recalcitrant troublemakers are with Tinubu, while the moderate brothers are largely Obidients as adduced from the true Lagos presidential election result. That's a great consolation. A great win for Nigeria and Nigerians.

You have gone to dig this from the January Post of Penguin the bird of misinformation.

Igbo propaganda is alive and well. Never relenting but always failing.

What happened to all the Igbo Majors that were involved? What happened to all the Igbo captains?

7 Majors led the coup and 6 were Igbo.

All those who died were directly shot by the Igbos.

Those you mentioned didn't sit down together with Nzeogwu to plan the coup. They were invited after the real coup has been planned. They never told them there was going to be a coup where both northern & premier leader would killed & eastern premier would not be killed!

There's no way you would tell a northern soldier then that you're planning on killing Sardauna and he would agree..

There's no way you would tell a southern solders then that you're planning to kill Akintola and would agree..

So they didn't tell them the real agenda. They only lied to them that it was about hosting out bad governance. Both Akintola, Sarduana are one of the best leaders Nigerian ever had, so I wondered where the bad governance was!

Akintola was the premier of the west and the west never complained about bad governance. Sarduana was the premier of the north and north didn't complain of bad governance... So Wetin con concern eastern man if not that there's more to it?

After they killed the 2 premier leaders, they grabbed power! Then they scrapped Nigeria regionalism. Why did Igbos scrapped Nigeria regionalism? It was cuz they wanted to be controlling the whole country resources from the centre. They had believed they would use power for a long time. Unknown to them, ironsi was killed and their planned perished!

Nah Wetin make Ojukwu start to dey think Biafra! To Ojukwu, if Igbos won’t be the ones to control the Nigeria from the center, then we rather go! If Ironsi wasn't killed and igbos didn't go out of power, Ojukwu won't go Biafra way!

Igbo revisionist.

See your true ringleaders of the January 1966 coupists.

So let me tell you what I think about the Like and Share button that we all like to use here at Nairaland Mr. mob member. My ratio over a long period of time is 9:1.

That is 90 to 10 percent. 90 is up and 10 is down. To be honest, I would be worried if it was 100 percent. So it's okay the way it is.

Overall, it means that in a forum that is visited by thousands of people from different ethnicities and backgrounds, 90 percent seem to agree with my point of view. That is huge, and they are so right.

The 10 percent of people who have reason to disagree are just as entitled to that point of view, and I welcome and respect their choice.

So you see, I am not consumed by your thoughts or the shenanigans of your little being.

Now run along and get a goddamn life while you're at it.

See Full List Of 1966 Coup Plotters And Their Tribe.

And only the one led by Nzeogwu was given that ethnic label and reinforced till today.
the question you should also ask yourself is why did they kill people they planned to kill in other tribes and those of the ibo were spared?

Me,I have cut ties with Yoruba in any thing in life, after realizing how wicked and hateful these people are. Let me tell you one thing most Igbo don't know, they wrongly think that Hausa is the enemy of Igbo in Nigeria, but that's fat lie, in fact hausa is Igbo big ally. The biggest enemy of Igbo and others ethnic minorities in Nigeria is Yoruba go and verify. Yoruba has colluded with any tribes they can find useful to perpetrate injustice againss the other tribes, they support every kind of oppression against other minorities as long as It doesn't hurt them and they can profit from the oppression. Evil people, no tribe in Nigeria will stay with Yoruba in one country and will be devoleped, because they are full of envy, blackmail and crab in the basket mentality.

Oga it was not about the coup it waz the execution of the coup. The coup was planned by soldiers from different part of Nigeria the issue is , the Igbos who are the leaders of the coup betrayed others by informing Igbo leaders about coup and also failed to kill igbo leaders the way leaders of other tribes were killed.

Igbos love to run away from responsibility for their actions.

Look at them running helter-skelter trying to revise history when the ringleaders of the coup are well known.

Igbos will leave, if u love us pray for Biafra

List the names and region of origin of the casualties, then we will take you serious. Besides the fact that you did not include the names of other Igbo officers involved in the coup
mention one Igbo officer, you can even Google the list, fact is that there is nobody in the coup that is from any core igbo state. Nobody. Its just pure hatred for the igbos.

You are wrong.ironsi foiled the coup and took power.Ojukwu was in Kano and opposed the coup.
The officer corp has more Igbo officers because the Igbo were more educated and ambitious but the 1996 coup was a national coup not an Igbo coup.
U guys should read history and stop this beer parlor gist.
