The record label is not obligate to buy car for any artiste, they give u ur normal 25%, 30% or 40% of all ur earnings(depending on the contract u signed) and u can decide to spend it on whatever u choose ranging from luxury cars, houses, jewellry, etc

Do Artists even know the politics that comes with getting air time or getting a platform to perform. If a label gives you a deal, you failed to read blame your self, it's business, a contract not a poverty eradication or charity organization .

The problem is artists these days are spoilt brats who don’t understand the business. Even Michael Jackson wasn’t earning money till his record label recouped their investment sadly by then the artist is usually and most times bigger than the record label interms of image and name but he’s not seeing the money yet cos the label is still getting almost everything. Then the artist with a bigger image than his record label who now look like a bondage to him fights back to have his freedom and make his money.

According to the members of TLC, as their success mounted, so did their debt.

With four career Grammy Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards and five Soul Train Music Awards, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and the late, great Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes are legends in their field.

However, despite their unmistakable presence in the R&B history books, T-Boz, Chilli & Left Eye all ended up filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 3, 1995, declaring debts of a whopping $3.5 million. Bloody how?

As it turns out, quite easily – provided you’re familiar with the sneaky pitfalls of a juicy Hollywood contract. The group maintained that they’d copped a pretty unfavourable deal concerning their contracts with both their manager Perri “Pebbles” Reid and their associated labels LaFace Records and Arista Records.

Firstly, Arista Records, LaFace Records, and Pebbitone recouped their investment for recording costs, manufacturing and distribution, which is a pretty standard practice in the music industry – the label will foot the upfront bill for getting the album off the ground, and take it out of the artist’s cut of the sales later on down the track.

This becomes troublesome if you lash out and mismanage funds – which TLC definitely alleged.

Both Pebble’s production company Pebbitone and LaFace Records then went on to charge for a host of other expenses, including airline travel, hotels, promotion, those neon-shiny definitively-’90s music videos, food, clothing, and more.

According to the members of TLC, the more successful CrazySexyCool became, the more they were in debt. It didn’t help that Watkins also required money for serious medical attention and Lopes had insurance payments to make after an arson incident (long story).

After these costs, managers, lawyers, producers, and taxes had to be paid, leaving each member of the group with less than $50,000 a year for their efforts – which isn’t great, considering they’d had one of the most successful multi-million-selling albums of all time.

In the end, TLC’s 1991 contract with LaFace saw the trio receiving 56 cents per album sold, and even less for each single – which they then had to split three ways.

Even by the standards of most major label recording contracts at the time, this was recognised as total bullshit. The group were finally let out of their contract with Pebbitone and got to renegotiate their deal with LaFace Records after two years of awkward legal wrangling.

Naturally, things went south from there and Cube turned up at the label offices and destroyed Turner’s space with a baseball bat. Speaking with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts, Cube opened up about the incident and prefaced the story by saying he tries to keep a check on his “violent” side but that he had no regrets about the breakages.

“He pushed me to the limit, and here’s why. I had sold a lot of records,” Cube begins. “I wanted and advancement on my next record because O’shea Jr was about to be born.” Cube was trying to “get a house for my family” but was $100,000 short. But as Cube’s house-buying process ticked on, Turner began ducking and diving away from Cube having already given him the green light for the advance.

When Cube finally got hold of Turner, the record boss rejected Cube’s idea that he had already agreed to which the rapper replied, “Oh. Okay. I’m on my way up there.” His story continues, “I walked through and they saw me with a bat… ‘What’s up, Cube!’. And I got the Lynch mob with me,” Cube continues as he narrates the scene from the film. But while the film saw Cube and his crew start smashing things as soon as they walk in, Cube says things were a little different.

“In reality, he was in the bathroom and when he came out, we were just posted up in his office,” after trying to pass off the misunderstanding, Cube locked the door and started to berate Turner. “I just got more heated and heated,” he continued, “I gotta take this back to South Central and rearranged his office for him.”
